'Passengers' Movie, Review & Interview with Chris Pratt & Jennifer Lawrence

Art Of Living Movie Review & Interview Series

Jennifer Lawrence and Chris Pratt star in an exciting action-thriller about two passengers who are on a 120-year journey to another planet when their hibernation pods wake them 90 years too early. Over the last few days, we've talked to "Passenger's" cast, Chris Pratt and Jennifer Lawrence, as well as Dr John Bradford (coming up...) Pratt and Lawrence characters, Jim and Aurora, who are forced to unravel the mystery behind the malfunction as the ship teeters on the brink of collapse, with the lives of thousands of passengers in jeopardy.

I have to tell you, I loved the movie. Chris Pratt is excellent as the action star that he's become and Jennifer Lawrence is a star. She is lovely, glamorous, yet down to earth and I'll bet she has a great sense of humor as a person. As the movie unfolds, and Lawrence, in character as Aurora, comes to life, she surprised me and I could see the her sense of soul, rage, and awe.

The setting of the spaceship is fantastic and you have to see this behemoth of a ship to truly get the drama of this thing, but the lighting, music, you're listening to some of it here, the CGI which is seamless and doesn't overwhelm, at all. BTW, the robot vacuum cleaners and Michael Sheen's character, Arthur, the bartending android, are fantastic. Again, Sheen, as Arthur must be seen: his smiling barkeep routine, slightly ironic, slightly mischievous, and a bit dirty minded is brilliant.

Personally, I love the "hard science" aspect of how the induced sleep is made to take over, and as I say, we'll be talking to Dr John Bradford later today about the development of this technology, it's role in the film and use in our world today. Like the movie, The Martian, and book of same name by Andy Weir, this element of what NASA research does, explaining the science through the use of it in Hollywood is welcome by me, and I love it, and I think you will, too.

    Enjoy.

Career Pivot, Author, CEO, Marc Miller Interview

Founder, leader, CEO, author of CareerPivot, Marc Miller's career has spanned 30+ years at IBM, thriving tech startups, a stint as a high school math teacher, a gig raising funds for the Jewish Community Center and, a near fatal bicycle accident that changed his perspective forever.

Throughout Marc's wandering the proverbial career desert, often repeating the same mistakes over and over, Marc learned his most crucial lesson: Most people don't really know what makes them happy at their core, what fulfills them. They pursue money, status, a skill set, all of which provide some level of satisfaction, but not contentment. People wind up feeling frustrated and trapped. Others have figured out what they need, but don't know how to chart a course to get there.

Marc founded CareerPivot.com to help the baby boomer generation create successful and fulfilling professional lives. Marc's books, his workshops, his speaking, resources, podcasts, and Marc's stated strategy is to work with those of us "in the 2d half of life," who want to change.

Join us as Marc Miller answers some excellent year end questions:

    • Does the idea of career change overwhelm you?
    • Do you feel trapped in your career?
    • Do you fear it's too late to make change?

Welcome to the show, Marc Miller.

#61 'Collateral Beauty' Interview Helen Mirren & Will Smith Dec 16, 2016
    Show notes

'Collateral Beauty' Movie Review & Interview Helen Mirren & Will Smith

I just saw the new movie 'Collateral Beauty.' This movie is a fine, beautiful, caring, sweet, dramatic, yet comedic at times film that I wouldn't be surprised to see get award recognition in the coming weeks. Will Smith and the entire cast, of Helen Mirren, Edward Norton, Keira Knightly, Michael Pena, Naomie Harris (who won the Hollywood Film Award, Best Breakout Performance for her role in Collateral Beauty), Jacob Latimore, and Kate Winslet play their roles to perfection and all of them bring an interesting and relatable perspective to the film's narrative.

While the ending is heartwarming, the journey to get there is deep, meaningful, rocky at times (btw, just like life) so don't expect a happy go lucky film (again, just like life).

You may be aware of the plot, and if not, Will Smith plays Howard Inlet, a grieving and troubled New York advertising executive who's forced to come to terms with a terrible tragedy. Howard begins writing letters to Love, to Time, and to Death as part of a therapeutic attempt to find meaning in the shadow of his own depression – only to find out that these perennial forces of nature are (apparently) willing to take the form of physical bodies and they speak with him directly. Howard's friends, co-workers and colleagues, learn that he's been writing these letters to the abstract themes like death, love, and time. The last thing Howard expects is to come face to face with his cosmic pen pals, but with their help and his friends' support, maybe he can finally work through his grief.

There is no easy way to tackle death in cinema and if you are anything like Will Smith's character, you will have a difficult time dealing with the subject matter of losing someone close to you. What I can say is that Collateral Beauty is one of the better films at taking a difficult topic and making it into an enjoyable film without losing its message to cheesy clichés. The film, the cast, the gorgeous production all deliver on the promise of first rate film drama, moviegoers are in for a heart-tugging treat come Christmas. Just a word of caution, if you've watched any of the trailers, you've likely been choked up, imagine what the whole film might do.

    See it…you'll love it!

WaterAidAmerica.org Interview with Cecile Shrestha: A Cause Worth Considering...

Today's show is special…and while all shows are special, we're at or near the end of the year, and the holidays are upon us. We've done great shows this year, and recently been given great opportunities with great guests. Consider this show to be along those same lines…a great guest, and a great subject. Albeit, a tough, challenging, and almost taboo subject, but important. Also important this time of year is to give, without expectation.

Today's guest, Cecile Shrestha, is director of philanthropy at non profit WaterAid. WaterAid needs your attention, and they deserve it. WaterAid ranks highly on charitynavigator.org , and is one of the world's most efficient non profits, returning over 82% directly to programs, accountability and transparency, and their fine efforts. Consider, please a donation at this time of year to WaterAid.

But, please consider something else, too.

One person in three lacks access to adequate sanitation. The result is widespread death and disease – especially among children – and social marginalization. Women are particularly vulnerable. Poor sanitation exposes females to the risk of assault, and when schools cannot provide clean, safe toilets girls' attendance drops.

Join me in welcoming to the show, Cecile Shrestha. Born and raised in Nepal, Cecile joined WaterAid in 2015, bringing over twelve years of experience in international development. At WaterAid, she manages key relationships with supporters, through events, outreach, and board development. Ms Shrestha has an M.A, and she is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of UCSD. Cecile's work and her story are amazing.

Please consider a donation to WaterAid (at wateraid.org) on behalf of safe clean water for drinking and cleaning.

#58 New Movie "Passengers" NASA Exoplanets PSA Dec 08, 2016

New Movie "Passengers" NASA Exoplanets PSA

NASA & Sony Collaborate for New Film 'Passengers' to Space Station, & PSA

Two interesting bits of news today, coming from NASA, I thought you'd enjoy. The first, which is very cool, is that astronauts and other crewmembers on the International Space Station will get to watch the new science fiction movie, "Passengers," while in orbit (you're listening to some of the theme music from "Passengers" now).

Sony Pictures Entertainment announced today that it is working with NASA to send a digital version of the film to the orbiting laboratory. The movie centers on a massive spaceship carrying a group of humans on a 120-year-long journey to a distant planet, where they will make a new home. To survive the long trip, the passengers are placed in a hibernation state, but two people (Chris Pratt and Jennifer Lawrence) wake up 90 years too early and are forced to cope with their new fate.

Of course, to help the International Space Station survive their long trip, Sony, generously has sent a digital version of "Passengers" up for their enjoyment. And, the other cool news from sony and NASA is that their as part of their collaboration, Pratt and Lawrence recorded a short video, PSA, discussing the real-world search for habitable exoplanets located elsewhere in the universe.

And, let's listen to a bit of that PSA from Jennifer Lawrence and Chris Pratt, what they have to say about their latest film, Passengers, what scientists believe about habitable planets, NASA's exploration for "new homes," and encouraging us to start our own stellar voyage by going to NASA.gov.

    Enjoy.

Today, December 7, 2016, is an important day to all, an important day to the Greatest Generation, and we're going to do something a bit different with 2 "75th Anniversary of Pearl Harbor" episodes. Our "memorial to memory" segments are inspiring and engaging. In our previous episode, we spoke with journalist Natalia V. Navarro. Jennings' new program in The Lost Tapes series, Pearl Harbor is a documentary like no other. You have to hear athis interview, and then see the program. By concentrating on what people said and thought in 1941, this show aims to give some in-the-moment perspective on the "Day of Infamy."

75th Anniv. of Pearl Harbor: Memorial at University of Arizona

Today, December 7, 2016, is an important day to all, an important day to the Greatest Generation, and we're going to do something a bit different with 2 "75th Anniversary of Pearl Harbor" episodes. Our "memorial to memory" segments are inspiring and engaging.

First up is journalist, Natalia V. Navarro. Natalia is a journalism student, in the accelerated Master's degree program at University of Arizona. I caught up with Natalia after reading her wonderful article on the new memorial created at the University of Arizona, in tribute to the USS Arizona, which was dedicated just this last Sunday. Natalia's excellent article, published in the Arizona Daily Star, and online at TucsonStar.com, offers an insider's glimpse into the new memorial, and proudly begins with the line: "There's a battleship on the University of Arizona Mall." I love that line, and enjoyed my conversation with Natalia.

Welcome, Natalia V. Navarro to The Not Old Better Show.

#55 'Loving' Movie Review, NOB with Gretchen Vogelzang Nov 24, 2016
    Show notes

'Loving' Movie Review, Art Of Living Series

Gretchen and I review the new movie, "Loving," from Focus Features, which celebrates the real-life courage and commitment of an interracial couple, Richard and Mildred Loving, who married and then spent the next nine years fighting for the right to live as a family in their hometown. Their civil rights case, Loving v. Virginia, went all the way to the Supreme Court, which in 1967 reaffirmed the very foundation of the right to marry – and their love story has become an inspiration to couples ever since. Rated PG, and Gretchen and I give it 4 stars.

    Enjoy.

"Soundbreaking" Series Interview with Joshua Bennett

Stories From The Cutting Edge of Recorded Music, from Music Today

If you're watching the new series on PBS, "Soundbreaking" like we are in our house, you know this is something to behold. If not, well, either way, we've got a treat for you with today's guest.

"Soundbreaking" is the brilliant, spanking new documentary from PBS in association with Sir George Martin, and is produced by Show Of Force. We're joined today via SKYPE with Show Of Force executive and one of "Soundbreaking's" producers, Joshua Bennett.

If you're watching Soundbreaking, which is airing currently on PBS (check your local listings), you'll agree, it is well worth it. There is something to be said for hearing that heavenly chorus of voices as the song "God Only Knows," by the Beach Boys, or Neil Young's voice on "Don't Let it Bring You Down," and Amy Winehouse, Sly Stone, Bonnie Raitt, Little Richard, Fleetwood Mac, the Staples Singers, or any of the other 160 musicians, and other music professionals, all of whom extol the music recording innovation tracing a sonic revolution.

The rare footage, the stories the artist's tell, the music, and the never before seen creative process push along Soundbreaking's story telling, emphasizing music's ability to carry us back and forward at the same moment. Trust me when I tell you, you'll never hear these songs the same way again!

Check PBS for the series, and each "Soundbreaking" episode will be made available for next-day digital purchase via multiple platforms including iTunes, Amazon Video, Vudu, Google Play, Microsoft Movies & TV and Sony Interactive Entertainment. The series will be released on DVD and Blu-ray on Tuesday, November 29.

    Enjoy!
