    Caretaker Essay to My Parents

The Not Old Better Show Reflections

I wish I could find any humor in taking care of my parents right now. I'm exhausted, and I think that's part of it, but we've always had a great relationship and now I find that, because they both so desperately need my attention and care as they age (my mom is 87 and my dad 86), that's it's become about performing a caretaker role, and not so funny after all. But, there are dear sweet moments, and tough ones, too.

I'm not an only child and I have no siblings to assist, and share with, but 'in the moment' it's me, whether counting out the dosage of medication, helping with clothing, bedding, washing, cooking, it's all tough and not a lot of funny to be found. I've been at their home for 4 weeks now, and I wish I could find some humor. But, the duty of being a caregiver to an elderly parent is an important one, but can often be stressful, and maybe the "laughter is the best medicine approach" while the smart play, isn't applicable in this instance.

    Thanks.

    Almond Blossoms of Central California

The Not Old Better Show Travel Series

I'm here in Northern California, specifically Modesto, where I grew up, visiting my parents, who are both pretty ill. But, I couldn't leave Modesto without giving you a glimpse into what is probably one the most beautiful sights in all of agriculture: almond blossoms.

After the first rains of the winter season, the California foothills start to turn green. By late March, wildflower displays are common, usually lasting into May. In the high elevation subalpine and alpine zones of the Sierra, the wildflower displays arrive in June and last through July or August. Fall brings vibrant leaf displays especially in the aspen groves. This transformation starts in late September and lasts through much of October. All of these are sights well worth seeing at some point in your life and returning to again and again if possible. But, for me, ranking right up there with the cherry blossoms in DC, closer to my parents home in Modesto, California , the orchards of the Central Valley put on their own extraordinary blossom show from the end of February through the beginning of March. The best website available for blossom information, biking, bus and driving tours (you can ride your bike along these routes) is offered by the UC Cooperative Extension at:http://cemerced.ucanr.edu/Blossom_Tours_262/. These tours are a great way to enjoy the beauty of our local outdoors in the early spring. Click HERE for more information.

    Enjoy.

    Sam Worthington, 'The Shack' Interview

The Not Old Better Show, Movies for Adults

Over the course of the last week, we've really had some great interviews, of course we've talked to star Octavia Spencer,…author, William Paul Young, who wrote the best selling novel, The Shack, that the movie is based on, actor Tim McGraw, and today, the last in our 'The Shack' series, actor Sam Worthington. Please check out the full complement of shows on the new movie, The Shack, at The Not Old Better Show, and today, a complete review of the movie.

The movie has inspiring messages about everything from seeking help/counsel to processing grief in a healthy way to the power of forgiveness. That said, the ideas related to God's role in people's lives will particularly resonate with Christians/those open to faith-based questions. I recommend the movie to my audience and specifically to people who are looking for a basic explanation of who the Trinity is; those looking to start a conversation about Christianity with their friends; people who enjoyed the bestselling novel.

And, now, After months of both anticipation and controversy, The Shack (based on William P. Young's 2007 bestseller) is a wonderful film. There are those who'll find fault with it, but again, for those interested in starting a conversation about God, this is a great place to start.

Check out our interview, and go see 'The Shack'

She analyzes the complex relationship between the often-unlikable power couple (Claire has pronounced "I'm done trying to win over people's hearts. …We can work with fear."), with an eye to whether their love for each other is stronger than their love for power, and if viewers are rooting for their success or their downfall.

Nintendo Switch Launch 55+ Age Gaming, with David Young

The Not Old Better Show, Interview Series

    NINTENDO SWITCH

Nintendo is launching its new console, the Switch, tomorrow, 3/3/17. I was invited to the big Nintendo party in Washington DC, recently, where I interviewed Nintendo PR chief, David Young about the Nintendo Switch's grand coming out party, where it's not just the concept that and I got to see the games, in the bold light of day, and learned precious details about system itself. Nintendo is allowing hands-on Switch play by the press and public for the first time in a few events around the world.

Rumors have been swirling about what exactly the Switch event will reveal. The two biggest rumors regarding the Switch at present are that the system will cost around $299, and that it will debut with The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild as a launch title. But there are many more mysteries to solve, including what other games the system will launch with, what third party developers will contribute to the system and the more technical aspects of the console and its self-contained screen-controller.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW, RIGHT UP FRONT:

    • Launches March, 2017, $299
    • "edgy, millennial angled home/mobile hybrid
    • 3 basic modes: TV Mode, Tabletop Mode, and Handheld Mode
    • The "Joy-Cons" which control the games, are like next gen Wii remotes with advanced internal "rumble" haptics (explain) that can distinguish different sensations
    • Battery life is 2.5 – 6.5 hours, depending on game, according to Nintendo
    • According to Nintendo Director, Shinya Takahashi, the inspiration for the Switch dates to the 19th (this refers to Nintendo's card making history, playing cards, and card games geared towards playing with other people)
    • Core gamers are crucial to the Switch's intial launch and marketing, but from there, core gamers, and others will help convey the appeal of the new games (1-2 Switch, e.g.) to a broader audience, and get them excited.
    • To that end, audiences like my own, of 55+ age community, will be excited about Nintendo's ongoing commitment to them, because Switch is partly an experiment to address certain cultural differences. As an example, kids playing with grandparents.
    • One of the games I read about, which IMO, shows Nintendo's commitment to the 55+ age, as well as to the notion of players working side by side, is the game Snipperclips. Could you describe this game, in terms of what you're to accomplish, when playing with other people, and how the "Puzzle solving" aspect builds hand eye coordination, so important to 55+ age community. Plus, this is a very social game.

The event was spectacular and I spoke to Mario & Luigi, Nintendo representatives, Nintendo fans, families Here's what some of them had to say about the game.
