Battle of the Sexes + Interviews: King, Stone and Carell

Movies for Adults Interviews & Review Series

The electrifying 1973 tennis match between World number one Billie Jean King (played in the film by Emma Stone) and ex-champ and serial hustler Bobby Riggs (played by Steve Carell) was billed as the "Battle of the Sexes" and became the most watched televised sports event of all time. The match caught the zeitgeist and sparked a global conversation on gender equality, spurring on the feminist movement. Trapped in the media glare, King and Riggs were on opposites sides of a binary argument, but off-court each was fighting more personal and complex battles. With a supportive husband urging her to fight the Establishment for equal pay, the fiercely private King was also struggling to come to terms with her own sexuality, while Riggs gambled his legacy and reputation in a bid to relive the glories of his past. Together, Billie and Bobby served up a cultural spectacle that resonated far beyond the tennis courts and animated the discussions between men and women in bedrooms and boardrooms around the world.

Dr Susan Persky, How Virtual Reality Is Changing Medicine

    Smithsonian Associates, Interview Series

Virtual reality has rapidly moved beyond the gaming world—and into the world of medicine. The ability to simulate experiences expands opportunities for doctors, biomedical researchers, clinicians, and patients in ways previously unattainable. Virtual reality is capable of making people feel as if they have traveled to another place, visualize things that can't exist in reality, and can be used to improve health care.

Today's show discusses the cutting-edge science and technology of this emerging area of medicine with Susan Persky, director of the Immersive Virtual Environment Testing Area at the National Human Genome Research Institute, National Institutes of Health.

Persky, a recognized expert in virtual reality's applications in biomedical research with and for patients, in medical education, and in clinical environments. She explains promising and diverse applications of virtual reality, such as in treatment for PTSD and phobia desensitization; rehabilitation for brain injury; patient assessment and training in conditions like autism; and practical training on complex procedures and difficult clinical conversations for medical students. Persky also covers NIH research into communication and decision-making in patients as they react to simulations of environments that might trigger healthy or unhealthy behaviors.

Although virtual reality can seem like something out of science fiction, the possibilities are virtually limitless in its applications to medicine and health care.

#124 "Their Finest" Movie Review & "Dunkirk" Movie Comparison Jul 30, 2017

"Their Finest" Movie Review, Interviews & "Dunkirk" Movie Comparison

I watched 2 movies this weekend. "Their Finest," from BBC films. I wasn't sure why I hadn't heard of Their Finest. Probably because it never actually got an American release, and even its UK release came two years after it acquired distribution. But its cast is everything good in the world: Gemma Arterton and Bill Nighy, who'll join us in a bit, via SKYPE.

"Their Finest," is really a 'movie within a movie,' about an aging British matinee idol who thinks he's been given too small a role as the uncle of twin sisters. An American who's supposed to play a hero is as dull as a stick. But a young woman in the script department has an idea that might make the formula work for a wartime British drama that's supposed to lift spirits at home and warm hearts across the ocean.

The wartime drama is centered around the role the twins play in rescuing soldiers from Dunkirk.

Jumping with the US ARMY Golden Knights!

13500 Ft. Above Earth, That's Me Up There...Jumping from Plane!

They're called the Golden Knights, and they've been in existence for more than 50 years. An elite group of men and women in the US Army, who travel all over our country, in fact, all over the world demonstrating some of the most elaborate, intricate and amazing feats of skydiving and of course, representing the US ARMY and our country in a very positive way. From time to time, the Golden Knights invite civilians to join in on the fun. And guess what…somehow or another I got invited and approved to join the Golden Knights, train and jump out of a perfectly good airplane 20000 ft. above the earth! After about 2 seconds of thought, I accepted the invite as the opportunity of a lifetime.

    Check it out!

    Enjoy.

Smithsonian Associates, Art of Living, Interview Series

Welcome to The Not Old Better Show. As part of our Smithsonian Associates, Art Of Living series, my guest today, Dr John Whyte is a popular physician and writer who has been communicating to the public about health issues for nearly two decades. Dr Whyte, an MD, who still sees patients, is probably best known in his role at the US Food & Drug Administration, where he works closely with health care professionals, patients, patient advocates, and others involved in the use of medicines and educational programming for both a medical and a lay audience.

Today on the show, Dr Whyte discusses, among other things, do avocados contain the "good" fat or the "bad" fat? Are coconuts healthful this week? As for your daily coffee, is it a virtue or a vice? And did you hear that barbecuing could increase your cancer risk? Confused? No wonder. There's a lot of murky, ever-changing information out there about nutrition and what's healthy to eat and what's bad for you.

The Not Old Better Show welcomes Dr. John Whyte, who is ready to bring some clarity to the subject. The board-certified physician and author of the best-selling AARP New American Diet: Lose Weight, Live Longer guides you through the latest scientific information and explains what foods can help you prevent disease and live longer, and which foods might increase your risk of certain diseases like diabetes, cancer, and heart disease.

The session begins with a fun quiz to test your knowledge of nutrition, and you'll head home with useful handouts and recipes to help you put Whyte's insights and information into practice.

Dr Whyte will be appearing at the Smithsonian Associates program, Thursday, August 3, 2017, Ripley Center, Washington, DC. Click HERE for more information and ticket details:
