To kick things off, Berkeley-based Toro y Moi turn over a new leaf, breaking away from their pioneering hazy chillwave sound to lift our spirits with Outer Peace’s revitalized dance-driven jams. Sir Babygirl’s debut, Crush on Me, drowns us in a chaotic, cotton-candy infused Nickelodeon pop dream as she wails about euphoric infatuation and aching heartbreak (fittingly, it’ll be released the day after Valentine’s Day.) And DC’s Priests are back with the sinister, alluring prowl of The Seduction of Kansas that will surely leave you craving for more. Let’s dig in.

Best Albums of 2018 Dec 21, 2018

The end of the year is no doubt a time for rumination on the songs that spoke to us and speculating on which artists will continue to make an impact. In this episode, we bring closure by highlighting the best albums and songs of 2018; the soundtracks that manifested our own experiences. The year taught us to look inwardly, as in Charlotte Day Wilson’s “Doubt,” in which she contemplates leaving behind her vices. Love, she comes to realize, is one of them. Empathetically, Amen Dunes considers mythical heroism and the contradictions of the people we admire in “Miki Dora.” And the dashingly brazen “ Pearly Gates” by U.S. Girls evokes the macro message that the ostensibly pleasurable is the political. We won’t spoil the rest—2018: let’s wrap it up.

Two Years Later: A Look At Whether Gender Parity Has Improved at Music Festivals May 12, 2018

Two years ago, we released an episode entitled "Where Are All The Female Festival Headliners?" which looked at the utter lack of big name female acts atop music festival bills, despite no shortage of qualified female-fronted acts to fit those slots. Journalist Alyssa Pereira (SFGate/SF Chronicle) joins host Adrian Spinelli once again, to look at how the festival industry has progressed...or hasn't, in the two years since. Also joining the show, is University of Chicago Data Scientist Rob Mitchum, whose festival gender balance-tracking data visualizations have appeared in Pitchfork for the past two years.

Who needs lyrics? There are so many great songs that kill the vocals and let the rest of the band do the talking. It's almost the time of year when what seems like every band in the world descends into one spot in California. And no, we're not talking about that festival in the desert, we're talking about Fauxchella. Fauxchella (a Spinning Platters term) is the name given to almost three weeks in April when all of the bands set to play Coachella make their way up to San Francisco. Almost every venue in the city is full of great bands night after night, and it can be pretty overwhelming deciding which bands to see. Tracing The Noise Pop Sound May 23, 2012

A few weeks ago, NPR asked us to come up with a list of definitive Noise Pop (the genre) songs for their website, NPR.org. It was a tall order and a fascinating challenge for us, and of course, we eagerly accepted. With tunes from the early '70s to modern songs released just a few months ago on our radar, we studiously dove into the decades to find the top 100. We sorted them chronologically in order to to show the evolution of the sound. The full list will post on NPR later this month, but for now we've assembled a teaser podcast episode that chronicles the genre's migration over the past 4 decades. Coachella 2013 Predictions Apr 25, 2012

There is an unofficial game music nerds play online; it's silly, it's futile and it is incredibly addictive, it's 'guess the festival lineup'. Music fans spend hours researching what bands are likely to play what festival and they share their predictions online where they argue endlessly about it. The best predictions are usually based on record release dates, tour schedules, the last time a band played a certain festival, what kind of sound they a band is, etc...

All festivals get this treatment, but no festival is obsessed over quite as much as Coachella. It's the white whale of lineup predictions and it seems to start earlier each year. So, with this year's festival coming to a close we decided it would be novel to take the first known stab at next year's festival lineup. We brirefly discuss this year's artists and then dive right into our logical choices for 2013. Of course, nothing is confirmed, these are merely guesses, but as you'll hear it's a hell of a lot of fun to play this guessing game.

This week’s entry was inspired by a covers infused dinner Noise Pop is putting on with local SF supper club graffEats. The chef is going to prepare dishes that are covers of famous chef's dishes, with which Noise Pop will pair cover songs. So every song in this episode is a cover. Taking it a step further Dawson and the team explore the different ways a cover can be done. To gain some insight Jesse and Dawson speak with Josh Modell, A.V. Club’s Editor-in-Chief, about his fantastic Undercover series. This week the NPP team tackles the new trend of popular R&B taking root in indie music. With new artists like The Weeknd, Frank Ocean, and How To Dress Well, it's clear that 90's R&B is making a comeback. This episode explores how it got to this point.The first clue started a few years ago when contemporary bands began covering R&B hits from the 90's - in 2009 The xx covered Aaliyah’s “Hot Like Fire.” Shortly after, the influence of this sound grew apparent in new indie bands like Gayngs and James Blake. Dirty Projector’s smash “Stillness in the Move” was a watershed moment, in which a pure R&B vocal was paired with the bands traditionally challenging sound. Now the stage is set for not just artists dabbling in an R&B sound but actual pure R&B artist to be embraced by the independent community, a fascinating and rewarding new trend in music.

The group also announce the winning name of their recommendation segment, “Ear About Town.” This episode’s segment Jesse, Jaime and Dawson stay with the theme and share their respective favorite R&B song from the 1990’s.
