Boarding Pass 066: TWA... One Mission, Yours Mar 01, 2021

Doug and Drew visit the TWA Hotel at JFK as part of a whirlwind avgeek coast to coast trip. COVID19 was definitely dampening the experience along with rain but we still enjoyed the mid-century modern architecture of Eero Saarinen. The rooftop pool was open and we had burgers and drinks with a Lockheed Connie as our backdrop. An avgeek mecca for sure.
    We also talk about:

    • We close out Black History Month remembering aviatrix Bessie Colemean
    • PW4000 Boeing 777 update and inaccurate media coverage. #HeavyMayday
    • Airline traffic fell last year to its lowest level since 1984
    • Mexico City's new airport may not be completed. Will it cost more to cancel the project
    • Singapore Airlines continues upgrading the A380 as other airlines retire them

We end the show with Doug talking about pilot air-to-ground communication from takeoff to landing using our flight from Miami to JFK as the example.

    Send us Fan Mail

Doug and Drew have a packed show for you this week so get ready to enjoy your commute, workout, or avgeek Zen moment with us. Topics we discuss:
    - Who knew the C5 Galaxy and 747 competed head-to-head for military and airline orders?
    - Two aircraft had engine failures this week. Doug talks about how crews handle engine failures and Drew discusses how the station addresses overweight landings
    - We can’t get enough about the Boeing NMA and all the possibilities a small widebody would open up. Would it be an A321XLR AND A330 beater?
    - Are airlines throwing darts on the board with new routes hoping some will stick?
We finish the episode saying goodbye to the Learjet. We ask you if you’d choose the CRJ200 or ERJ145 as your personal business jet.

Doug and Drew love airports and we have another airport employee and civilian turned avgeek, Jenn, or @Jenn_Niffer on Twitter. Jenn works in airport finance but loves the operations side and will come out and help, when they let her. Jenn runs a fun blog called Tales From theTerminal (www.talesfromtheterminal.com) where you can read about her airport adventures.

    Other topics covered:

    • Its the law - TSA mandates masks in the airport and onboard aircraft
    • JetBlue introduces an updated version of it’s Mint premium product in preparation for A321XLR service to LHR
    • Aviation Week reports that Boeing is moving forward with a widebody NMA (new middle market aircraft) to beat the A321

We end the show with Jenn av-splaining what you can and cannot say on the ATC frequency and we choose which airport vehicles we’d choose if we were racing them. Watch this hilarious Top Gear episode that we laughed about with Jenn. Join the conversation and stay aviation tough!

Doug and Drew start February - Black History Month - remembering the Tuskegee Airmen. Will the Washington Football Team pick an AvGeek nickname "The Red Tails" as Drew and Doug hope? We love widebodies, but force each other to discuss the business reasons for Singapore and Cathay Pacific using narrowbodies for the first time in decades. Other topics on this show:

    • Should COVID-19 tests be required for domestic flights?
    • What is a nautical mile vs. a statute mile and why does it matter?

We end the show with a poll by our buddy Greg who posed the question, "Which USAF bomber should lead the Super Bowl flyover next Sunday? "

What is snarge? To find out you gotta listen to the whole episode with our special guest, airport operations supervisor, Francis (Twitter - @foxtrotcola). We discuss what the 3 of us, a pilot, airline ops manager, and airport ops supervisor do to respond to bird strikes and emergency landings.

    • Update on the Sriwajaya 737-500 crash
    • United Airlines 4th quarter results

Listen all the way to the end where Francis and Doug do a role play of Drew's favorite scene in the move airport 1970. See the actual scene here:

Boarding Pass 060: Simulator Stories Jan 18, 2021
    Show notes

    Send us Fan Mail

Doug and Drew live on location... in Camden, NJ! Despite the winter winds, it was actually a great recording location. In this episode:
    - Doug's unexpected work trip to the East Coast
    - Delta is the first airline to report 2020 annual numbers, have they turned a corner?
    - Norwegian pulls the plug on low-cost long-haul flying in a bid to save the company
    - Best NFL charters of the weekend
    - Simulator training for flight crews
Honorable mention: we recorded a segment on Southwest Airlines celebrating its 50th anniversary this week, but the winds made the entire segment unintelligible and unusable. Hopefully we can circle back to it and re-record in an upcoming episode because there was a lot of great information discussed. Congrats Southwest - here's to another successful 50 years (and more)!

(Spoiler alert, always bet on the 747).

    Topics discussed:

    • Will any of the Big 4 (United, American, Delta, Southwest) merge in 2021
