Is Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey a true cinematic masterpiece—or an impressive visual epic that falls just short of Nolan’s best work?
On this episode of The Next Reel, Tyler Johns and Lance Taylor break down one of the most anticipated movies of 2026: Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey After seeing the film twice during its premiere weekend, Tyler shares his complete review of Nolan’s ambitious adaptation of Homer’s legendary Greek epic.
The discussion covers the movie’s enormous scale, stunning IMAX cinematography, emotional themes, major performances and the importance of choosing the right theatrical format. Tyler explains why watching The Odyssey outside of a full 70mm presentation can affect the film’s aspect ratio, visual impact and overall sense of immersion.
They also discuss Matt Damon’s performance as Odysseus, including how he handles the character’s guilt, shame, exhaustion and helplessness throughout the journey. Tyler also highlights Jon Bernthal’s performance as Menelaus, praising Bernthal for stepping outside the aggressive, hot-headed roles audiences often associate with him.
While many early viewers have called The Odyssey a masterpiece, Tyler offers a more measured reaction. He considers the film a powerful visual spectacle and gives it 4 out of 5 stars, but does not rank it among Christopher Nolan’s very best movies.
The review also examines several creative decisions made in adapting Homer’s original story, including notable pieces of dialogue and mythology that were changed, shortened or removed. Did Nolan’s version capture everything that makes the original epic so memorable? Should audiences prioritize seeing it in IMAX, or could waiting for the digital and streaming release provide a more complete visual experience?
Before getting into The Odyssey, Lance recaps a scorching weekend trip to New Orleans that unexpectedly became a New Orleans-themed movie marathon. That includes Nicolas Cage’s bizarre and completely over-the-top performance in Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans, along with a viewing of the 1975 Paul Newman thriller The Drowning Pool.
Then, Tyler and Lance take a trip through movie history as they reveal their personal *op five nostalgic summer movies. These are not simply the biggest blockbusters or the most critically acclaimed summer releases. They are the movies connected to unforgettable theater experiences, childhood friendships, family memories, music, vacations and specific moments from their younger years.
Which films made their lists? Which summer classics still hold up decades later? Which movie memories are about more than just the movie itself? Watch the full episode to hear both countdowns and see which selections earn the number-one spots.
