"Young Woman And The Sea" Jun 01, 2024

Show notes

For this week's main podcast review, Ema Sasic & Dan Bayer, and I are reviewing the Disney inspirational sports drama, "Young Woman And The Sea," starring Daisy Ridley, Tilda Cobham-Hervey, Stephen Graham, Kim Bodnia, Sian Clifford, Christopher Eccleston & Glenn Fleshler. Directed by Joachim Rønning and produced by Jerry Bruckheimer, the true story evokes the fondest memories of other live-action Disney productions such as "Remember The Titans" and "Cool Runnings." What did we think of it? Tune in as we discuss the story, Ridley's performance, the swimming scenes, the powerfully stirring score by Amelia Warner, and more in our SPOILER-FILLED review. Thank you for listening, and enjoy!

Interview With "The Dead Don't Hurt" Director/Writer Viggo Mortensen & Star Vicky Krieps May 31, 2024

Show notes

"The Dead Don't Hurt" had its world premiere at the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival, where it received decent reviews for its direction by Academy Award-nominee Viggo Mortensen, his score, and the performances from him and Vicky Krieps. An emotionally sweeping romance set against the backdrop of the old West, Mortensen and Krieps were both kind enough to spend some time talking with us about their views on the material, working alongside each other, and more. Please be sure to check out the film, which is now playing in theaters from Shout! Studios. Thank you, and enjoy!

Interview With "In A Violent Nature" Director/Writer Chris Nash May 30, 2024

Show notes

"In A Violent Nature" had its world premiere at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival, where it received strong notices for its direction by Chris Nash, which takes the approach of telling a slasher film from the perspective of the serial killer rather than the victims. The film disgusted audiences with its brutal and highly meticulous kills and is now being released in theaters by IFC Films, with a streaming release on Shudder set for later this year. Nash was kind enough to spend some time talking with us about his feature directorial debut. Please be sure to check out the film, which will be released in limited release in the U.S. by IFC Films on May 31st. Thank you, and enjoy!

Interview With "Expats" Star Sarayu Blue May 29, 2024

Show notes

"Expats" was the much-anticipated miniseries from director Lulu Wang following her excellent feature film "The Farewell." It premiered on Amazon Prime Video on January 26th and received critical acclaim for Wang's direction and the performances. Critics particularly singled out Actress Sarayu Blue for her powerful breakout role, which stole the show from the top-billed Nicole Kidman. Blue was kind enough to spend some time talking with us about her work on the show, what the experience meant to her, what she hopes audiences will take away from the show, what she has coming up next in her career, and more. Please be sure to check out the show, which is now available to stream on Amazon Prime Video and is up for your consideration in all eligible Emmy categories. Thank you, and enjoy!

"Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga" May 25, 2024

Show notes

For this week's main podcast review, Josh Parham and I recorded our review for George Miller's "Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga" shortly after watching the film at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival, where it had its world premiere. Because this was such a large film and we didn't want to leave other members of the NBP team out, we asked those who wanted to contribute their thoughts to record themselves separately and send them in. So, throughout our SPOILER-FILLED review, you will also hear from Ema Sasic and Brendan Hodges. Starring Anya Taylor-Joy, Chris Hemsworth, Tom Burke, Alyla Browne, Lachy Hulme, Nathan Jones, Charlee Fraser, Josh Helman, John Howard & Angus Sampson, the anticipated prequel to the Oscar-winning "Mad Max: Fury Road" finds George Miller back in the desert again giving us another entry in the "Mad Max" franchise. What did we think of the story, performances, action set pieces, and the bonkers glorious craftsmanship on display? Tune in as we discuss these elements, its awards potential, and more in our review. Thank you for listening, and enjoy!

"127 Hours" May 24, 2024

Show notes

THIS IS A PREVIEW PODCAST. NOT THE FULL REVIEW. Please check out the full podcast review on our Patreon Page by subscribing over at - https://www.patreon.com/NextBestPicture

Our 2010 retrospective continues with Danny Boyle's "127 Hours" starring James Franco, Amber Tamblyn & Kate Mara. Based on the incredible true story of Aaron Ralston, the film was Boyle's anticipated follow-up to his Oscar-winning film "Slumdog Millionaire." Reuniting with his collaborators and getting a career-best performance out of Franco, the film earned six Oscar nominations, including Best Picture. How has the survival drama held up all these years? Please tune in and listen to Sara Clements, Dan Bayer , and me discuss our thoughts on the direction, cinematography, editing, Franco's performance, its awards season run, and more in our SPOILER-FILLED review. Thank you for all your support, and enjoy!
