Episode 103 - Our Reactions To The Academy's Changes, Including Best Popular Film & More Dec 20, 2017

Show notes

Episode 103 is probably the most important episode we have ever recorded. History was made on August 8th 2018 when the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences introduced three major new changes which rocked the industry. After years of making suggestions on what changes we would like to see The Academy introduce, none of the changes they actually announced pleased us one bit. Here to discuss all of this is Michael Schwartz, Ryan C. Showers, Celia Schlekewey, Kt Schaefer, Josh Parham & Jacey Aldredge as we try to answer your questions and ask some of our own regarding the recent decisions by AMPAS. The search for the Next Best Picture just got more complicated.

"Half The Picture" is a documentary, directed by Amy Adrion, which explores the dismal number of women directors working in Hollywood, the hardships they go through on a daily basis to get their projects made and their hopes for the future in the wake of movements such as #MeToo and #TimesUp. Amy Adrion was kind enough to lend us a few minutes of her time to talk to us about her experience making the film, what her goals are, premiering the film at Sundance and more.

Show notes

THIS IS A PREVIEW PODCAST. NOT THE FULL EPISODE. Please check out the full episode on our Patreon Page by subscribing over at - www.patreon.com/NextBestPicture

The Next Best Series Podcast is back to reviewing an actual television show for once instead of just talking about the Emmys (But don't worry, those episodes will be back soon) as myself, Michael Schwartz & Ryan C. Showers give our initial thoughts on HBO's new Miniseries "Sharp Objects" starring Amy Adams, Chris Messina and Patricia Clarkson & directed by Jean-Marc Vallee ("Demolition" and "Big Little Lies"). Ryan has read the book where Michael and I have not and all three of us have different reactions to the first half of the series so far. We will be back in 4 weeks to give our analysis of the show's final four episodes and thoughts on the series as a whole.

For our first podcast review on "Last Best Picture" we reviewed "One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest," then we reviewed "Lawrence Of Arabia." Now, for the month of July, the winner of our poll for the next Best Picture Winner/Nominee for us to review was 1942's "Casablanca." It is a classic, timeless film which Michael Schwartz and I were so happy to revisit and talk about on the podcast.
