"The Personal History Of David Copperfield" Aug 29, 2020

Show notes

For this week's main podcast review I'm joined by Josh Parham, Dan Bayer & Daniel Howat. Together we're reviewing the latest from Armando Iannucci, "The Personal History Of David Copperfield." With a color-blind and utterly delightful cast led by Dev Patel, Iannucci takes many risks with his Charles Dickens adaptation. How do they pay off? What did we think of the performances? The film's tone and humor? Find out in our review down below. Check out more on NextBestPicture.com Please subscribe on... THIS IS A PREVIEW PODCAST. NOT THE FULL REVIEW. Please check out the full review on our Patreon Page by subscribing over at - https://www.patreon.com/NextBestPicture It's been a fun ride. With our review of "Gone Girl" on the Next Best Picture Podcast, we have come to the end of our 2014 retrospective. The NBP Film Award Nominations are out as are the NBP Film Community Award Nominations (Winners to be announced this Sunday) and David Fincher's film has been a constant presence amongst them as it has been in the public's subconsciousness since its debut in 2014. Grossly overlooked at the Academy Awards (with a lone Best Actress nomination for Rosamund Pike's horrifying and complex performance as Amy), we explore the film's themes, performances, technical merits and more! Joining me for this Patreon podcast review I have Amanda Spears, Dan Bayer, Ryan C. Showers, Danilo Castro & Patreon guests Michael Wachowiak & Cesar Infante. Thank you once again to the Patreon listeners and to the rest of you who gave us something truly fun to do during a pandemic. We'll see you next year for our 2013 retrospective! Interview With "Boys State" Directors, Amanda McBaine & Jesse Moss Aug 14, 2020

Show notes

"Boys State" premiered earlier this year the Sundance Film Festival where it won U.S. Documentary Competition Grand Jury Prize. An A24 production, it got picked up by Apple and is now streaming exclusively on Apple TV+. The documentary follows a thousand teenage boys attending the Boys/Girls State program in Texas. Their goal is to put their political differences aside and come together to build a representative government from the ground up over the course of a week. The documentary's directors, Amanda McBaine and Jesse Moss, were kind enough to sit down and chat with us about how they came to the project, working on it and film's reception so far. Take a listen below! Check out more on NextBestPicture.com Please subscribe on... "Boyhood" Aug 13, 2020

Show notes

THIS IS A PREVIEW PODCAST. NOT THE FULL REVIEW. Please check out the full review on our Patreon Page by subscribing over at - https://www.patreon.com/NextBestPicture The 2014 retrospective is coming to an end. We have now come to Richard Linklater's 12-year- long opus "Boyhood" starring Ellar Coltrane, Patricia Arquette, and Ethan Hawke. Premiering at the Sundance Film Festival in 2014 to universal critical acclaim, the gigantic independent film (shot over the course of 12 years) could not maintain its momentum until Oscar night where it lost Best Picture and Best Director, only winning one award for Patricia Arquette in the Best Supporting Actress category. Remembered for being a bridesmaid, how does the film hold up today? Was the praise warranted? I am joined by Dan Bayer and Patreon guests Isaiah Washington & Mike Pisa-Kino to discuss.
