"Mutant Crush," X-Men: Evolution Sep 15, 2020

Show notes

In the fourth episode of X-Men: Evolution, we get introduced to Fred "The Blob" Dukes. This starts out as a promising story about someone who pushes back against his bullies, but then it spirals off into fatphobic garbage and negative stereotypes about fat people. Maddy and Ryan would not recommend that you watch this episode! But please enjoy us tearing it apart... including Ryan's mic sounding a bit blown out the entire time because we had to use backup equipment (and also we were yelling, because we were mad, because this episode is fucked up). Stick around to the end of the episode for a very special segment featuring some insights about bullying via Ryan's sister, who works as a guidance counselor. "Rogue Recruit," X-Men: Evolution Sep 08, 2020

Show notes

Rogue has finally arrived, sugah dumplings, and she has two moms. Two terrible, terrible moms. Professor Xavier would be a better parent, but not by a lot, because he still sucks in this episode. Rogue has to figure things out for herself, as usual. The results are still pretty bad-ass even though she's just a kid. X-Men Spotlight: Destiny, a.k.a. Irene Adler (from Sherlock Holmes?!?!?!?) "The X-Impulse," X-Men: Evolution Sep 01, 2020

Show notes

Enter Kitty Pryde and her valley girl accent on the second episode of X-Men: Evolution. Ryan and Maddy love Kitty even if she has, like, a totally tubular speech pattern. In this episode, Jean Grey and Xavier take the Blackbird to Illinois to recruit Kitty, but they soon get intercepted by teen bad boy Avalanche. Meanwhile, Cyclops and Nightcrawler are hot for teacher Wolverine... who is hot for Sabretooth, as usual. "Strategy X," X-Men: Evolution Aug 25, 2020

Show notes

Ryan and Maddy settle in for the debut episode of X-Men: Evolution! But first, some reminiscing about the political climate during the time period that this show came out, and also our own experiences as teenagers watching this show. X-Men: Evolution is much more overt about its queer analogy, and also, it's just a damn good show. Oh... by the way? Professor Xavier's still a piece of shit. Just saying. X-Men Spotlight: Toad! X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009) Aug 18, 2020

Show notes

It finally happened... We watched X-Men Origins: Wolverine. The 2009 exploration of Wolverine's origins disappointed us at the time, and it disappoints us so much more in 2020. With Todd Harper's help, Ryan and Maddy tear apart this notoriously bad movie, which is impressive only in the sense that it manages to offend just about everybody. "Mutants' Revenge," Spider-Man The Animated Series Aug 11, 2020

Show notes

Maddy and Ryan finally close the book on X-Men: The Animated Series with the second half of the show's two-part crossover with Spider-Man The Animated Series. It's a very entertaining send-off. Logan and Beast finally tell everyone they're dating, Spider-Man learns the importance of friendship (or something?) and Hobgoblin uses a CD-ROM. Next week's episode: X-Men Origins: Wolverine (we have to watch this, but you definitely shouldn't!) "The Mutant Agenda," Spider-Man: The Animated Series Aug 04, 2020

Show notes

Back in September 1995, the Spider-Man animated series did a crossover with X-Men: The Animated Series, starting with Spider-Man learning he's mutating and then going to Professor Xavier for help. Unfortunately, instead of just calling Xavier on the phone, Spider-Man breaks into the X-Mansion, and for some reason he's surprised that the X-Men attack him. Good news, though. This episode's really gay. It's also a two-parter, so we'll be back next week with our thoughts on the second half. Listener Mail, July 2020 Jul 28, 2020

Show notes

Ryan and Maddy open up the mailbag for some listener-submitted questions about the X-Men villains we don't like, some theories about how the MCU might finally go about introducing the X-Men, and discussion about potentially casting actors of color to play X-Men characters originally conceived of as white. Last but not least, we have the second issue of The Mutant Ages Comic Book. Interview: Cal Dodd, voice of Wolverine on X-Men: The Animated Series Jul 21, 2020

Show notes

At long last, Maddy and Ryan called Wolverine. Or at least, we called the best-known originator of the character's voice, Cal Dodd, the actor who voiced Logan on X-Men: The Animated Series. We talked to him about Wolverine's emotional vulnerability, the ways that X-Men: TAS refused to shy away from politics, the fact that Cal is a Storm/Wolverine shipper, and also a series of videos in which Cal sings to a Canada goose. Yes, really. Looking Back on X-Men: The Animated Series Jul 14, 2020

Show notes

Now that Ryan and Maddy have finished watching all of X-Men: The Animated Series, they can look back on the series as a whole and evaluate it. We discuss our favorite and least favorite characters, our favorite ships, the best and worst episodes, and the political allegories that this show has done. We also talk about our personal lives over the past three years since we started this show, and how the X-Men (and The Mutant Ages) made us into our best queer selves.
