    The Movie Crypt

Filmmakers Adam Green (FROZEN, the HATCHET franchise), Joe Lynch (MAYHEM, EVERLY), and Arwen the Yorkie host this inspirational and educational program that offers a fully comprehensive look at the entertainment industry, the artistic process, and the enduring struggle of not giving up on your dreams. By candidly sharing their own trials and tribulations in Hollywood, Adam and Joe create an extremely honest and heartfelt dialogue with their guests. The hilarious, heartbreaking, and therapeutic “artist on artist” conversations focus on each guest’s individual journey and the various hurdles they have personally faced and conquered along the way. With guests ranging from Academy Award winners, entertainment icons, and A-list celebrities… to cinematographers, editors, studio executives, and countless other crucial positions not typically featured in the spotlight, an average episode of THE MOVIE CRYPT offers more insight for navigating the entertainment industry than an entire semester of film school. Ep 444: Ryan Lee Dec 06, 2021
    Show notes

PUBLIC VERSION. Actor Ryan Lee (SUPER 8, GOOSEBUMPS) joins Adam, Joe, and Arwen to discuss his career journey. In a bit of cine-serendipity, we have Ryan this week fresh off the holiday madness that is Casey Tebo's new film BLACK FRIDAY (available now on VOD) and NEXT week we'll have Casey the director AND "The Chin" himself, Bruce Campbell! We swear we didn't plan this… but you're welcome, Tebo. Just send the check to ArieScope Pictures. But we digress… Ryan is a fantastic actor who has worked in both film and TV, from his fresh beginnings on FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS and BREAKING BAD (where he received some amazing advice from "Walter White" himself- Bryan Cranston) to other genre efforts like JJ Abrams' SUPER 8 and more! Ryan and Joe even commiserate about working together on the TV series MY DEAD EX (available now on Netflix) where Ryan recalls working with Joe and his (in)famous "F Yeah!"s after every take. Ryan also regales working on BLACK FRIDAY…ON Black Friday itself last year, what it was like adjusting to set life during the pandemic, shares excellent advice he received from Cranston and Campbell, and Dr. Arwen offers some sage "Hollywood Therapy" to an indie filmmaker seeking advice. This episode is the perfect primer to get you ready for the quickly approaching YorkieThon 6, which is happening NEXT WEEK! Tune in Friday December 10th at 5pm PST through Sunday December 12th at 5pm PST on ArieScope.com for our 6th annual 48-hour LIVE marathon to benefit Save A Yorkie Rescue. Featuring over 70 special guests, live music, live comedy, live script readings, live film commentaries, "Arwen's Silent Auction," and much much more! Ep 443: Scott Reynolds Nov 29, 2021
    Show notes

PUBLIC VERSION. Happy Holidays! As the seasons change and the turkey leftovers slowly dissipate from the fridge, it's time to embrace the chill factor and start gathering the gifts and what better way than to do it with one of the executive producers of the new season of DEXTER: NEW BLOOD, writer/producer Scott Reynolds (JESSICA JONES, IRON FIST)! Scott started like all of us with big dreams and a little luck which landed him in Los Angeles where odd jobs at bookstores fueled his fire to get in the writers room for shows like TOUCHED BY AN ANGEL, which led to his now eclectic writing career on some of TV and streaming's biggest genre efforts. And with DEXTER, how Scott was able to evolve from an entry level position on the writing staff to one of the head creatives in the new series (currently on Showtime) is proof positive that a solid work ethic, knowing your talents and the talents of the other writers working with you will lead to great things in this business. For all you aspiring TV writers, Scott's story is particularly inspiring as he gives tips of the trade on how to run a room, hire staff and break stories. Dr. Arwen emotionally supports TWO "Hollywood Therapy" patients and considering Scott is also a massive dork like us, there is plenty of geeking out about our favorite flicks!

And don't forget…YORKIETHON 6 is quickly approaching! Friday December 10th through Sunday December 12th on ArieScope.com, our 6th annual 48-hour LIVE marathon to benefit Save A Yorkie Rescue will feature over 70 special guests, live music, live comedy, live script readings, live film commentaries, "Arwen's Silent Auction," and much much more! Join us for the madness, the mayhem, the merriment…the MANY cups of coffee.

    Ep 442: Josh Malerman Nov 22, 2021
    Show notes

Screenwriter, novelist, and musician Josh Malerman (BIRD BOX, TV's CREEPSHOW) joins Adam, Joe, and Arwen to discuss his career journey and creative process. Jumping right in with a discussion about Josh's song "The Luck You've Got" (performed by his band THE HIGH STRUNG and used for the iconic opening credits sequence of TV's SHAMELESS) the conversation quickly moves into Josh's writing process and the pressures that came once the 2018 Netflix film BIRD BOX (an adaptation of his 2014 novel) turned into pop culture phenomena. From how Josh is able to find a way to continue to write even when not feeling particularly inspired… to the importance of keeping his talent in a "safe and untouchable spot"… to how the cultural environment affects the honesty and integrity of an artist's work… this conversation wound up being one of the deepest and most sincere MOVIE CRYPT episodes of 2021. In the longest and most candid "Hollywood Therapy" session in the history of this podcast, Dr. Arwen and her assistants attempt to provide emotional support for a listener who is realizing that today's divisive and volatile times are changing them into someone they no longer recognize and Josh explains why every artist needs to learn how to "leave themselves a present" in this extremely raw and extended length episode that is sure to ruffle some feathers. (See what we did there? BIRD BOX? Feathers?? Whatever, YOUR jokes are stupid.)

Don't miss a single sleepless second of YORKIETHON 6 taking place Friday December 10th through Sunday December 12th on ArieScope.com! Our 6th annual 48-hour LIVE marathon to benefit Save A Yorkie Rescue will feature over 70 special guests, live music, live comedy, live script readings, live film commentaries, "Arwen's Silent Auction," and so much more! It's the podcast event of the year!

    Ep 441: Christopher Smith Nov 15, 2021
    Show notes

Filmmaker Christopher Smith (CREEP, SEVERANCE, BLACK DEATH, TRIANGLE) shares his career journey with Adam, Joe, and Arwen. From a child collecting film magazines with a belief that he could someday make his own films… to having that belief confirmed during his time in film school… to the realization that he'd have the best chance of getting a feature off the ground if he made something in the horror genre… to the terrific reception of his debut film CREEP and the string of terrific films that have followed… to his move into television directing… to the making of his latest film THE BANISHING (available now on VOD, digital, Blu-Ray, and DVD)… this candid conversation between 3 filmmakers with a 15 year history together covers almost every single aspect of both the craft and the business. Dr. Arwen provides "Hollywood Therapy" for a patient who has terrific ideas for films but an unfortunate list of physical ailments preventing him from writing the scripts himself, Chris reveals the chilling source of where he found the inspiration for some of the most disturbing imagery in THE BANISHING, and the boys discuss the art of building proper dread in a thriller.

"The Chin" himself - Bruce Campbell (THE EVIL DEAD series, BUBBA HO-TEP, BLACK FRIDAY) will be opening this year's YORKIETHON! Join us Friday December 10th at 5pm PST through Sunday December 12th at 5pm PST for our 6th annual 48-hour live marathon to benefit Save A Yorkie Rescue. PUBLIC VERSION. Filmmakers Philip Gelatt (LOVE, DEATH & ROBOTS, EUROPA REPORT) and Morgan Galen King discuss their new animated feature THE SPINE OF NIGHT with Adam, Joe, and Arwen. Starting with an in-depth look at their painstaking decade long process of shooting live action reference and then rotoscoping beautiful 2D animation to create the fantastic look of THE SPINE OF NIGHT (now available!)… to their separate origin stories that got them started in the industry and ultimately working together… to a hilarious conversation about how to deal with difficult notes (skiing nurses and scary stoves)… this candid discussion will surely inspire those who are still just getting started to not give up hope on their journey to start telling the stories they're truly passionate about.

Don't miss a single sleepless second of YORKIETHON 6 - Friday December 10th at 5pm PST through Sunday December 12th at 5pm PST! Ep 439: Adam Marcus Nov 01, 2021
    Show notes

PUBLIC VERSION. In this special 2.5 hour episode (for our Patrons) filmmaker Adam Marcus (JASON GOES TO HELL: The Final Friday, CONSPIRACY, SECRET SANTA, co-writer TEXAS CHAINSAW 2013) joins Adam, Joe, and Arwen in the ArieScope studio for a conversion about his career journey that winds up being one of the very best episodes of this podcast that you'll hear this year. From Adam's childhood growing up around the industry… to the pros and cons of attending NYU… to Adam's personal relationship with Sean and Noel Cunningham and how it lead to him directing JASON GOES TO HELL: The Final Friday at just 23 years old… to the challenging production, the controversial creative decision of having Jason Voorhees body swapping through characters rather than being on screen throughout the run of the film, and the film's legacy that will forever be a permanent part of Adam's life and career… Adam pulls the curtain OFF on not just JASON GOES TO HELL (you'll never see the film the same way again) but on the business of making horror movies in general. Dr. Arwen provides "Hollywood Therapy" for a screenwriter looking for some preparation suggestions before seeking thoughts from trusted readers, opinions are shared on HALLOWEEN KILLS, and the boys reveal who will be opening Yorkiethon 6!

    Ep 438: Lowell Dean Oct 25, 2021
    Show notes

Filmmaker Lowell Dean (WOLF COP, ANOTHER WOLFCOP, 13 EERIE, SUPERGRID) joins Adam, Joe, and Arwen to discuss his career journey to date. From graduating film school and starting out at a local Canadian TV station… to making the frightening choice of stepping away from the financial security of his full time local TV station gig in order to gamble on himself and shoot his first short film on 16mm short ends… to freelancing as a production assistant whenever and wherever he could find work… to one of the craziest stories you'll ever hear in regards to how he found himself in the director's chair of his first feature film… Lowell's career path is just as inspirational as it is relatable for so, so many aspiring filmmakers looking to get started. Dr. Arwen provides "Hollywood Therapy" for a listener with a question about filmmaking in other countries, Adam shares behind the scenes details about the making of his 23rd annual Halloween short film (GHOST DOG - now playing on the ArieScope YouTube channel here: https://youtu.be/CJRXzywsiig), and the boys reveal some of the amateur mistakes they made the first time they attempted to shoot something.

Ep 437: Jill "Sixx" Gevargizian Oct 18, 2021
    Show notes

PUBLIC VERSION. Known by many as "Jill Sixx," filmmaker Jill Gervargizian (THE STYLIST) has one of the most relatable and encouraging career stories that aspiring artists could hope to hear. Much like the majority of up and coming filmmakers who listen to THE MOVIE CRYPT religiously, Jill doesn't live near Los Angeles or NYC… she didn't go to film school… and she had to hold down a "real" job (she worked as a hair stylist for 10 years) to make ends meet while simultaneously getting her career as a filmmaker started. She didn't have an industry connection to speak of or a wealthy family member/friend who could green-light her dream of making movies. (Sound like YOUR current circumstances?) However, after attending her first horror convention and realizing that "movies can also be made by real people," Jill pulled together what little resources she had available and made her directorial debut with her short film CALL GIRL. Her short found success in some of the biggest film festivals and ultimately served as her calling card for the feature version - THE STYLIST (out now). From finding her own wonderful support system in the Kansas City community of cinephiles, genre fans, and aspiring artists… to making a positive impression on the various filmmakers and industry players she'd meet on the festival circuit simply by being herself and asking for nothing (as Adam states having first met Jill at FrightFest in London)… Jill's journey is a shining example of what Adam and Joe always say: "If we could find a way, so can you." Dr. Arwen leads a group "Hollywood Therapy" session on the subject of crowd funding and Jill provides major inspiration through her story of staying grounded, working hard, and making things happen for herself as opposed to waiting for a lucky break, hoping for a door to magically open, or allowing Hollywood's seemingly impenetrable and extremely unfair system to allow her to feel like a victim.

Get in the Halloween spirit by watching the 23rd ArieScope Halloween short film GHOST DOG (now playing on ArieScope.com and on the ArieScope YouTube channel), by watching one of Joe's TWO new CREEPSHOW episodes (now playing on AMC's SHUDDER), and by picking up the new HOLLISTON graphic novel ("Holliston Goes to Hell") and the latest HATCHET comic book ("Victor Crowley's Halloween Tales 3") wherever you buy comics or directly from ArieScope.com!

    Ep 436: Elza Kephart Oct 11, 2021
    Show notes

PUBLIC VERSION. Filmmaker Elza Kephart (SLAXX, GRAVEYARD ALIVE) joins Adam Joe, and Arwen to discuss her career journey and the making of her latest feature film SLAXX. From realizing that she wanted to be a filmmaker at age 10… to leaving Canada to attend Emerson College in Massachusetts… to returning to Canada and writing/directing her first feature film GRAVEYARD ALIVE (2003)… to assisting in the art department, serving as a location coordinator, or providing research on major studio films like THE MUMMY: TOMB OF THE DRAGON EMPEROR, RED 2, THE SMURFS 2, and X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST… to making her latest off-the-wall horror/comedy SLAXX about a possessed pair of jeans (now available on VOD, digital, and DVD)… Elza has worked long and hard to get to this moment! Dr. Arwen provides "Hollywood Therapy" for a filmmaker looking to cast a famous face in an ultra low budget feature and Adam completes production on ArieScope's 23rd annual Halloween short film (more details next week)!
