    The Movie Crypt

Filmmakers Adam Green (FROZEN, the HATCHET franchise), Joe Lynch (MAYHEM, EVERLY), and Arwen the Yorkie host this inspirational and educational program that offers a fully comprehensive look at the entertainment industry, the artistic process, and the enduring struggle of not giving up on your dreams. By candidly sharing their own trials and tribulations in Hollywood, Adam and Joe create an extremely honest and heartfelt dialogue with their guests. The hilarious, heartbreaking, and therapeutic “artist on artist” conversations focus on each guest’s individual journey and the various hurdles they have personally faced and conquered along the way. With guests ranging from Academy Award winners, entertainment icons, and A-list celebrities… to cinematographers, editors, studio executives, and countless other crucial positions not typically featured in the spotlight, an average episode of THE MOVIE CRYPT offers more insight for navigating the entertainment industry than an entire semester of film school. Ep 533: David J. Schow Aug 21, 2023
    Show notes

PUBLIC VERSION. Legendary writer David J. Schow (THE CROW, LEATHERFACE: TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE III, CRITTERS 3 & 4, THE HILLS RUN RED, and SO MUCH more) joins Adam, Joe, and Arwen for an incredibly candid conversation about his prolific career. From writing a newspaper article about people overdoing their tans leading to David writing articles for various Men's magazines… to his prolific arsenal of incredible one-of-a-kind short stories that created "Splatterpunk" and captured the attention of a young wunderkind at New Line Cinema named Mike Deluca… to being invited in to pitch story ideas for the 1989 TV series FREDDY'S NIGHTMARES where he landed a gig writing what would become the Season 1 finale ("Safe Sex")… to what his exact involvement actually was with NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET 5: THE DREAM CHILD… to why violence and carnage are not enough to make up a good horror story… to one of the craziest horror convention cosplays you'll ever hear about (it even has a "happily ever after" aspect)… to his painful experience writing for the reboot of THE OUTER LIMITS (the original series is his favorite show of all time)… to the trials and tribulations of being a screenwriter and having to publicly wear any creative changes that were made to your script during the production process without your input or knowledge… to the true story of how the MPAA screwed over the release of LEATHERFACE: TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE III… to why David has the odd credit of "teleplay by" on Dave Parker's THE HILLS RUN RED (2009) and why the guys believe that the "Babyface" character could have been ranked among the great slasher icons if the film had received the multiple sequels it deserved… to David's extremely personal stories from the making of THE CROW and his honest reflections on the powerful and everlasting legacy of the universally beloved film - including the reason why he's only ever watched it twice… Schow is living proof that hard work, tenacity, and originality can indeed pay off and shine through the dark times. After all, "it can't rain all the time." Dr Arwen provides "Hollywood Therapy" for a returning patient who's just completed her very first short film and looking for some advice as she starts submitting it to festivals, David reveals what became of the De Laurentiis mechanical "King Kong" created for the 1976 remake, and Adam shares the embarrassing story of the first time he tried smoking weed in this brutally honest, extended length, special episode that's so damn good you're going to want to listen to it twice! Live in Los Angeles? Come see Joe's Lynch's 2017 hit MAYHEM on the big screen at the Landmark Nuart Theater in West Los Angeles on September 1st! The evening will include a Q&A with Joe and members of the film's crew hosted by Adam Green. Want to hear the full version of this episode? Show notes

PUBLIC VERSION. Filmmaker Stephen Scarlata (BEYOND THE GATES, JODOROWSKY'S DUNE) joins Adam, Joe, and Arwen in the ArieScope studio to discuss his career journey. From Stephen's start working for the legendary Roger Corman back in the 90's… to working almost every position and in every facet of production over the next three decades… to writing and producing 2016's fantastic BEYOND THE GATES…to the making of his new documentary (and directorial debut) SHARKSPLOITATION (now streaming on Shudder)… Stephen and the boys take a deep dive (pun intended) into the process of making a great documentary. The group also discusses the craft of finding and building the best narrative story arc out of hours and hours (and hours) of interview footage, Stephen explains why a good lawyer makes all of the difference when it comes to licensing clips from movies and TV series both bog and small, and the boys rank the films of the JAWS franchise from their favorite to their not-so-favorite. This time… it's personal. "Roar."

From his hit 2019 Netflix horror series MARIANNE… to making the jump to features and working with producers Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg on the new horror chiller COBWEB (in US theaters July 21st!)… to how Stephen King was a major influence on his work… to how he approaches violence on screen… to what it was like working on a film in a language secondary to his own… to how acting himself in the past helped with directing… to what it takes to get a great performance out of a child lead… to the art of picking the perfect creepy wallpaper for your film… Samuel is most definitely a filmmaker to watch right now! Interestingly enough, Samuel and Joe have kinda sorta collaborated before which is also covered in this conversation.

Season 5 of PROJECT GREENLIGHT and Meko's finished film GRAY MATTER are both streaming now on MAX!

    Show notes

From growing up around a mortuary where she caught her first glimpse of… well, you'll hear… to how wanting to meet Mario Lopez played a role in her becoming a child actress… to the Uncle who used to scare her with a Michael Myers mask… to how sex is depicted in modern day cinema and television and the precautions that Hollywood has been implementing to try and make sets feel safer… to why the industry could greatly benefit from offering actors some sort of assistance in coming back OUT of especially traumatizing roles that they have just spent weeks or months immersing themselves in… to why method actors can sometimes go too far with their process and the drag that they can sometimes be on a production… to the audition process she went through in landing the role of "Lita Ford" in THE RUNAWAYS… to her experience playing "Laurie Strode" and how she dealt with the initial comparisons to Jamie Lee Curtis that HALLOWEEN franchise fans began making before she had even shot a frame of the film… to some of the major roles that got away and how she learned to roll with the many rejections that every actor faces over the course of their career… to whether or not she plans to step into the director's chair and SO MUCH MORE… this personal and brutally honest conversation between three friends is one that will surely have you laughing just as much you're learning about Scout's experiences in front of the camera (so far)!

Dr. Arwen hears from a listener who took years of MOVIE CRYPT advice to heart and pivoted to find themselves living their best creative life in a heart warming and inspiring "Hollywood Therapy" segment, Adam meets his Mom's biggest fan in Sacramento, and Joe tests the boundaries of his friendship with Adam in an effort to save himself 95 cents in this incredibly entertaining (and sometimes raunchy) conversation.

    Ep 528: Robert Englund Jul 17, 2023
    Show notes

PUBLIC VERSION. Legendary actor and horror icon Robert Englund (A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET, V: THE FINAL BATTLE, STRANGER THINGS, HATCHET, BEHIND THE MASK: THE RISE OF LESLIE VERNON) joins Adam, Joe, and Arwen for a wonderful conversation about his 50 year journey through Hollywood and his lifelong love affair with cinema. From the importance of film festivals and why every filmmaker needs to experience seeing their work with an audience whenever possible… to why he thinks Montreal is the best city to visit in the summer… to shooting by international candlelight… to why he adores Lance Henriksen… to how he considers taking on new projects and how he's held on to his love of acting for half a century… to why he believes a director's ability to command a room with their unabashed passion is the very key to securing a production's budget… to why the modern deluge of streaming content is giving today's audiences "entertainment fatigue"… to what he felt went wrong behind the scenes of his directorial effort 976-EVIL… to his process behind becoming "Victor Creel" and his season stealing performance in Netflix's monster hit STRANGER THINGS… to the emotional experience of seeing the new documentary HOLLYWOOD DREAMS AND NIGHTMARES: THE ROBERT ENGLUND STORY (now on Screambox and available for digital rental/purchase) for the very first time at the Sitges International Film festival in Spain… to deeply personal stories about how Robert has been one of Adam's cinematic angels in his journey as a filmmaker… this is an extremely candid conversation with Robert Englund that you simply won't hear anywhere else.

You can hear all of Robert's greatest hits and "Freddy" stories in the awesome new documentary, in his 2009 autobiography HOLLYWOOD MONSTER, and in the phenomenally comprehensive NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET documentary NEVER SLEEP AGAIN… but this truly special fly on the wall conversation between three filmmakers (who are still just movie fans themselves) is something you can only get from THE MOVIE CRYPT.
