    The Movie Crypt

Filmmakers Adam Green (FROZEN, the HATCHET franchise), Joe Lynch (MAYHEM, EVERLY), and Arwen the Yorkie host this inspirational and educational program that offers a fully comprehensive look at the entertainment industry, the artistic process, and the enduring struggle of not giving up on your dreams. By candidly sharing their own trials and tribulations in Hollywood, Adam and Joe create an extremely honest and heartfelt dialogue with their guests. The hilarious, heartbreaking, and therapeutic “artist on artist” conversations focus on each guest’s individual journey and the various hurdles they have personally faced and conquered along the way. With guests ranging from Academy Award winners, entertainment icons, and A-list celebrities… to cinematographers, editors, studio executives, and countless other crucial positions not typically featured in the spotlight, an average episode of THE MOVIE CRYPT offers more insight for navigating the entertainment industry than an entire semester of film school. Hailed by Entertainment Weekly magazine as “one of the top 20 podcasts you should be listening to” [Issue #1345], a new episode of THE MOVIE CRYPT has been released every single Monday without fail since the day the podcast launched on May 6, 2013.

Ep 579: The Blair Witch Roundtable Jul 08, 2024
    Show notes

In July of 1999 they were a crucial part of a film that lit up the box office, challenged the rules of conventional story telling, and impacted culture all over the world. 25 years later their true story is told. THE MOVIE CRYPT's special roundtable series continues with this fascinating, heartbreaking, and inspiring conversation with actors Joshua Leonard and Michael Williams from THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT - one of the most profitable indie films ever made. Though this roundtable was originally being developed to discuss the taboo subject of "Hollywood Accounting," the focus sharpened after Adam Green found himself at a front row seat to a very candid, honest and private conversation between the BLAIR WITCH cast and co-director Eduardo Sanchez last March in Cincinnati. Shortly after that night, actor Joshua Leonard came to the decision to speak up publicly on social media for the first time about what the experience of being such a significant part of THE BLAIR WITCH phenomenon has REALLY been like.

For 11+ years of doing this weekly podcast you've likely heard the phrase "unless your film makes BLAIR WITCH money you'll never see the backend that you've earned" at least a dozen times or more. This conversation shatters that myth and peels back the curtain on a system that is in need of more transparency and fairness.

As with all of our special roundtable episodes, this episode is being released publicly in its entirety. Read Joshua Leonard, Michael Williams, and Heather Donahue's interview with VARIETY here: https://variety.com/2024/film/news/blair-witch-project-cast-robbed-financial-success-1236033647/

    Ep 578: Chris Nash Jul 01, 2024
    Show notes

PUBLIC VERSION. Filmmaker Chris Nash (IN A VIOLENT NATURE, ABC'S OF DEATH 2) joins Adam, Joe, and Arwen in the ArieScope Studio to discuss his career journey. From his fascination with art and FX work as a child growing up in Canada… to the horror films that he admires most… to working at an actual FX shop thanks to the encouragement of previous MOVIE CRYPT guest Steve Kostanski (PSYCHO GORMAN)… to providing make-up FX for countless other productions… to the writing of his subversive/experimental horror film IN A VIOLENT NATURE which focuses mainly on the slasher himself instead of on the characters trying to survive… to the film's challenging shoot (and re-shoots)… to designing and planning for the film's many gruesome kills by leaning on his many years of FX artist experience… to where the concept of "Johnny's" awesome mask came from… to his bold choice to not use score in the film… to NATURE's Sundance world premiere and the various audience responses from screenings since… Chris is a terrific example of an artist making waves by creating the kind of film HE wants to see instead of trying to chase current market trends.

    Ep 577: J.D. Lifshitz Jun 24, 2024
    Show notes

PUBLIC VERSION. Producer J.D. Lifshitz (BARBARIAN, FIRESTARTER, THE VIGIL, WRATH OF BECKY) joins Adam, Joe, and Arwen in the ArieScope Studio to discuss his career journey. From the movies that inspired him as a child and set his heart on a career in the movie business… to making his first movie in 7th grade (and putting a New Line Cinema logo on it)… to becoming a Hollywood history buff by reading, watching, and teaching himself who all of the players were and then reaching out to every filmmaker and executive he admired so that he could start learning the ropes as a teenager… to retaining his drive and ambition through thick and thin and always pressing onward and upward… to why he believes that a healthy level of delusion and ignorance served him so well… to the pivotal moment when he and his business partner made the decision to stop chasing the market and start making the movies they themselves sincerely wanted to see… to producing a string of terrific movies like THE VIGIL, BECKY, BARBARIAN, and more… to the first time seeing one of his films with the New Line Cinema logo officially on it... the fact that J.D. has already accomplished so much through sheer will and uncompromising tenacity will remind you that your dreams are attainable, too.

    Ep 576: VC Dupree Jun 17, 2024
    Show notes

PUBLIC VERSION. Actor Vincent Craig Dupree (FRIDAY THE 13TH PART 8, SOUTH CENTRAL) joins Adam, Joe, and Arwen in the ArieScope Studio to share his career journey. From being discovered at his first ever audition by legendary filmmaker Stanley Kramer (GUESS WHO'S COMING TO DINNER, THE DEFIANT ONES)… to literally walking around Los Angeles and dropping off his headshot at every agency he could find along the way… to acting in commercials and booking various television roles on shows like KNIGHT RIDER, A DIFFERENT WORLD, PARADISE, and FREDDY'S NIGHTMARES… to his starring role as "Julius" the boxer in FRIDAY THE 13TH PART 8: JASON TAKES MANHATTAN (a film he didn't even realize he was starring in until another cast member told him at the airport before his flight to set!)… to his role as "Loco" in SOUTH CENTRAL… to making the decision to step away from the industry for a bit and make raising his son his one and only priority… to the huge commercial campaign he's been starring in for the last 3 years… to appearing at genre conventions and beyond… VC has always stuck to his principles and kept his head squarely on his shoulders. (Well, except for that one time on a rooftop in Manhattan!)

    Ep 575: Jim Cummings Jun 10, 2024
    Show notes

PUBLIC VERSION. Filmmaker and actor Jim Cummings (THE WOLF OF SNOW HOLLOW, THUNDER ROAD, THE BETA TEST, HALLOWEEN KILLS, BARRY) joins Adam and Joe in the ArieScope studio to share his career journey. From the disastrous screening that lead to him stepping away from directing for several years and the moment that a submerged shopping cart helped him realize that he'd never make a boring movie again… to why so much of writing is actually not writing… to making up for the gap in sex in modern cinema and why he doesn't hold back on sex or violence artistically… to why he prefers long takes in his story telling… to shooting during the period where the WGA and the agencies were in a stand-off over "agency project packaging"… to meeting his entertainment heroes… to what it was like facing off with "Michael Myers" and whether or not he was really scared… to his OPPENHEIMER audition… to his positive experiences with crowd funding projects… to working on BARRY… making his hilarious new short film IS NOW A GOD TIME? (world premiering at Tribeca) and the joys of making shorts… Jim gets extremely candid and honest about his Hollywood experience.

Dr Arwen provides a short but sweet "Hollywood Therapy" session for a fan who has fallen in love with horror conventions, Adam and Joe steal and eat a famous director's candy, and the group discusses whether or not a disconnect exists between the industry the media and the audience.

    Ep 574: Diane Foster Jun 03, 2024
    Show notes

PUBLIC VERSION. Filmmaker Diane Foster (IOWA, VEROTIKA) joins Adam, Joe, Arwen, and the ArieScope Fluffle to discuss her career journey and the making of her holiday-themed horror flick EASTER BLOODY EASTER. From making the move from New Jersey to Hollywood… to becoming an original dancer for The Pussycat Dolls… to producing a festival darling that premiered at Tribeca… to working with her film family, gigantic jackalopes, demonic bunnies, and gallons of gore on EASTER BLOODY EASTER… to her experience on Glenn Danzig's VEROTIKA… this conversation is a fun-filled basket of Movie Crypt goodness with a positive message of sisterhood and some gore to boot!
