    Show notes

Democratic Socialist Angie Nixon is running for U.S. Senate with a grassroots campaign that has surprised many, even within the Democratic party. If elected, she would become Florida’s first Black senator.
With two weeks to go before the midterm elections, Nixon joins Jorge and Paola to break down how she is connecting with voters across the political spectrum at a time when Florida has a record number of registered Republican voters. She shares her views on the U.S. embargo on Cuba and the need for democratic elections in Venezuela. Ben Affleck on Making “Animals” in an Era of AI and Political Division Oct 14, 2026
    Show notes

Ben Affleck has spent decades working in Hollywood as an actor, writer, and director. This year, he sold his AI filmmaking company, InterPositive, to Netflix in a deal reportedly worth nearly $600 million, and his latest directorial feature, Animals, was released just last week.

Now, Affleck joins The Moment to discuss his new film, a thriller about an independent candidate running for mayor of Los Angeles who needs the Latino vote to get ahead in the polls—all while his son is kidnapped.

Affleck reflects on working with his Latino cast to get the Spanish and Mexican accents right, what the film reveals about political disillusionment as the midterms approach and the need for more empathy in a divided country. He also discusses how AI is changing filmmaking and how he used it in Animals, and why he admires Jennifer Lopez in an industry where Latinas remain underrepresented.

Summer of Socialism: The Rise of the DSA Aug 12, 2026
    Show notes

The Democratic Socialists of America are gaining members, winning Democratic primaries, and pushing for policies that once seemed far outside the political mainstream. So why are voters turning to them now?

Jorge and Paola sit down with DSA national co-chairs Megan Romer and Ashik Siddique to talk about what’s behind the political rise of democratic socialists at a time when many Americans are frustrated with the cost of living and ongoing wars, why the word “socialism” may carry a very different meaning for younger voters, and their stance on Cuba’s regime. They also discuss the pushback that the DSA has encountered, not only from Republicans but also from within the Democratic coalition itself.

Why Latin Music is Taking Over With Rolling Stone's Julyssa Lopez Aug 05, 2026
    Show notes

Paola Ramos sits down with Rolling Stone’s Deputy Music Editor, Julyssa Lopez, to unpack how Latin music is capturing these cultural and political times. Julyssa lays out the argument that Latin music and Spanish-language songs topping the charts have become a lasting force that has consistently shaped American culture.

The two journalists discuss Shakira’s four consecutive World Cup performances and how reggaeton continues to reinvent itself through emerging subgenres like reggaeton darks and cumbia goth. Julyssa also shares her experience spending time with Bad Bunny during his Coachella concert and on the set of his "WHERE SHE GOES" music video.

John Leguizamo's Long Road To This Year’s Biggest Blockbuster Jul 29, 2026
    Show notes

John Leguizamo is starring in The Odyssey, one of this summer’s biggest blockbusters, so we’re revisiting Jorge and Paola’s conversation with the Colombian-American actor to reflect on building a career in an industry that has long offered few leading roles for Latinos.

Together, they look back on the experiences that shaped Leguizamo’s view of Hollywood’s lack of diverse representation, from his early days in theater to working on Carlito's Way. Jorge and Paola also discuss his perception of Latinidad and community organizing, along with John’s outspoken criticism of the Trump administration and why he identifies as a democratic socialist.

America’s Long Shadow Over Cuba with Ada Ferrer Jul 22, 2026
    Show notes

For Ada Ferrer, making sense of the ties between the United States and Cuba has always been crucial. Brought to New Jersey as a baby, she became an immigrant before she could even talk, joining what is now a diaspora of over 2.9 million people. Ferrer went on to become one of the country's leading historians of the Caribbean island and a Pulitzer Prize-winning author.

As the Trump administration continues to threaten the island with military intervention and shortages of fuel, electricity, and food intensify, Ferrer joins Jorge and Paola to unpack the latest chapter in the decades-long relationship between the two countries and what the worst-case scenario could be for Cubans. They also discuss her new book, Keeper of My Kin: Memoir of an Immigrant Daughter, tracing her own family history from slavery to the pursuit of the American Dream.

For more than three decades, she's interviewed the players shaping the modern tech world, from Steve Jobs to Mark Zuckerberg, while reporting on the rise of the internet and artificial intelligence and the politics surrounding both.

Jorge and Paola sit down with Kara to learn about her concern about the trillions of dollars of investment pouring into AI and whether this could lead to a major economic crash. They also talk about why Kara finds this pay-to-play relationship between President Trump and tech billionaires so alarming, and the possibility of her leaving CNN if the Ellison family’s acquisition leads to the same changes that reshaped CBS.

The U.S. at 250: The State of The American Dream Jul 01, 2026
    Show notes

This July 4th, the country finds itself at an inflection point: from Supreme Court rulings with potentially dramatic implications on our elections, our immigration system and the rule of law, to the upcoming midterms, where control of Congress and the Senate hangs in the balance. This year, everything, it seems, is up for grabs.

To discuss this anniversary, Jorge and Paola are joined by The Moment’s Executive Producer Daniel Alarcón to share their perspectives on how these events are shaping our democracy, the state of the American Dream, and what the World Cup has revealed about who we are. They are also joined from Caracas by Radio Ambulante producer Mariana Zúñiga, who’s reporting on the aftermath of the two devastating earthquakes in Venezuela and what the humanitarian response says about U.S. foreign policy.
