077: Bootstrapping vs. Raising Money with Chris & Rob Taylor Apr 14, 2022
    Show notes

Today, I’m speaking with the powerhouse brother duo, Chris and Rob Taylor.

    Here’s a bit of context…

Chris founded a company called Square Root in 2006 which helps automotive OEM field managers understand and act on unique data patterns and opportunities for retailers in their markets. The company was acquired by CDK Global, where Chris continues his journey as Vice President and General Manager.

His brother Rob Taylor is co-founder of Austin-based Convey, which was acquired for $255 million by project44. Convey powers direct-to-consumer delivery experiences for more than 2,000 of the world’s largest brands.

What’s interesting is that Chris & Rob took very different startup paths, but got to very similar destinations.

Chris bootstrapped and scaled a single startup over the course of 17 years and didn’t take a single dollar of outside money.

Rob on the other hand, leveraged venture capital to fund 7 different startups over a 20 year period. It’s a go big, go fast strategy.

Both paths have pros and cons that we dig into during today’s conversation.

These guys have had major exits, and major success, and I wanted to talk to them all about their experience building, scaling, and selling businesses.

We discuss entrepreneurship, acquisition deals, IPOs, bootstrapping vs. raising money, VC partnerships, and so much more.

071: Investing in Emerging Markets with Cole Shephard Mar 03, 2022
    Show notes

The Federal Reserve is printing more money than ever before in history. In fact, 40% of the money in circulation was printed within the last two years! This has led to overpriced assets, overpriced stock markets, and overpriced real estate. So, when it comes to investing, how exactly do you find good deals? In today’s episode, you’ll learn about one way you can invest in deals with high growth potential!

I'm speaking with Cole Shephard. Cole is the co-founder of Legacy Group, a highly successful alternative asset management firm based in Colombia.

Prior to Legacy Group, he spent eight years providing accounting and advisory services for PricewaterhouseCoopers, which is the second-largest professional services network in the world and is considered one of the Big Four accounting firms.

Cole’s desire to learn led to him working abroad in places like Bermuda and China, where he was able to fast-track his experience. He provided accounting and advisory services for clients participating in global mergers and acquisition activities and managed major transactions with deal sizes into the billions of dollars.

In this episode, Cole shares highlights from his remarkable career and why he eventually decided to quit his job to pursue investing opportunities in developing countries.

BTW, one of those opportunities was starting The Green Coffee Company—a coffee producer that is on track to become the largest producer of coffee in Columbia!

You’ll learn all about undervalued markets with huge potential, and why Colombia is one of the best places for lifestyle arbitrage in the world.

Emerging markets have less access to capital, which makes them ripe with opportunities for those willing to venture outside their comfort zone. If this sounds interesting, definitely don’t miss my conversation with Cole Shephard!

    FREE Gift

Between now and March 31st, he’s offering 2 free bags of his Green Coffee Company, farm-direct coffee, to be delivered directly to your house. And if you’re listening after March 31st, don’t worry, Cole is still providing you with a 20% off coupon anytime you order on Amazon. This offer applies to US residents only.

070: The Optometrist Who Made a Multimillion Dollar Exit with Dr. Tony Jacob Feb 24, 2022
    Show notes

In today’s conversation, I’m speaking with Dr. Tony Jacob. Tony is a doctor, entrepreneur, investor, and the former owner of a multi-million dollar optometry practice—which he built from the ground up.

Realizing the upside to owning a business, Tony made the leap from doctor to entrepreneur in 2010 and hit an impressive $1M in sales within the first 18 months of launching his company.

By the end of 2021, Tony had opened 11 different locations and increased revenue by 7X in the last 4 years of operation. He decided it was time to roll things up and sell. Last month, his company was officially acquired, making it the largest private sale in the state of Texas for an optometry business.

Despite having no background or previous experience building a company, Tony figured it out through hard work and persistence. He made mistakes, learned from them, and kept pushing forward—strong values which were instilled by his parents.

In this episode, you’ll hear all about Tony’s entrepreneurial journey and the steps he took to start, scale, and sell his optometry business. We talk about making connections, how to hire and grow your team, investing in cryptocurrency, and the power of earning enough passive income to live life on your terms.

    FREE Gift

Dr. Tony’s giving away his free report, Hockey Stick Growth, which outlines his 5 tips for becoming a more effective CEO and the strategies that allowed his company to scale.
