On October 4, 2023, a growing network of advocates, companies, government agencies, utilities and others will showcase the benefits of energy efficiency during the 7th annual nationwide Energy Efficiency Day.
Energy efficiency strategies need to be part and parcel of the transition to a net-zero economy, as homes and businesses powered by solar, and wind need to be as efficient as possible to maximize their energy potential.
On today's show, Dr. Katherine Johnson will discuss how energy efficiency policies and goals have improved customers health, comfort and safety while also reducing energy costs. She will how customers can "get their energy efficiency veggies," like energy audits, insulation, air and duct sealing before investing in the "renewable energy desserts."

Electric Vehicles (EVs) are supposed to be the answer to reducing our dependence on fossil fuels and propel us into a clean-energy future. But EVs, both cars and trucks, continue to encounter "speed bumps" along the way to full-scale adoption.
These challenges were recently highlighted in the DOE's EV Road Trip, which exposed the shortcomings of the current EV charging infrastructure. EV trucks, which are heavier, face additional challenges highlighted by the American Trucking Association in recent Congressional testimony.

The world's richest countries have pledged up to $100 billion annually to fund investments that will reduce global warming. However, recent reports from media outlets and climate policy think tanks have uncovered the lack of accountability in climate finance investments. Government officials from Finland and The Philippines are raising concerns about the lack of transparency and accountability for these investments, describing the current project as "the wild west of finance.... Essentially, whatever they call climate finance is climate finance."

China plays a critical role in the Green Energy Transition as a primary supplier of solar panels and batteries. Despite China's pledge towards net zero, its actions speak much louder than its promises. For example, China fast-tracked 106 gigawatts of coal-fired power capacity this year, the highest rate since 2015.
An Italian researcher discovered that China uses coal-burning facilities to make 80 percent of the world's solar panels. Even more disturbing, these panels are made by Uighur Muslims in forced labor camps.

A new partnership between agriculture and Solar PV farms has emerged as part of the green revolution. Described as "agrivoltaics," is the co-location of solar energy installations and agricultural crops either beneath or between rows of photovoltaic panels.
Solar grazing is has become a critical element of this partnership and sheep are considered the ideal "lawn mowers." They also enjoy the shade of solar panels on hot days.
But solar grazing is just one part of the green revolution as a there is a larger debate over the future of agriculture. Surprisingly, 13 nations want to abolish farming as a way to "protect the planet" from harmful methane gas.

The KJ Show #53 - Range Wars: The Fight Over Ovens, Furnaces and Water Heaters Aug 02, 2023

The debate over "clean and green" energy is coming to our homes and favorite neighborhood restaurants. Jurisdictions across the US and Europe are implementing bans on residential connections for gas-fired appliances, including stoves, furnaces and water heaters. Wood-fired pizza overs are under fire in New York as government agencies are worried about the potential damage from GHG emissions. Wood-fired pizza ovens are banned in several Italian cities.
But this debate is just beginning! A California court overturned the legitimacy of the City of Berkeley's ban on gas stoves even as other cities like New York and Eugene, OR, are considering enacting similar restrictions in their towns. Although these bans only target new construction, European jurisdictions are considering banning gas-fired appliances in existing homes.
However, these unilateral bans on gas-fired equipment do not address the following critical issues: electricity costs three to more times more than natural gas; most restaurant chefs prefer using natural gas as it is an optimal way to control the heat (and Italian chefs love their pizza ovens); and the costs to retrofit existing homes and buildings to comply with these new regulations are out of reach for most customers.
