Portal QB Updates ahead of Jan. 2 | CFP Preview The situation regarding alleged tampering between LSU-bound staff and Ole Miss players is a major storyline, particularly with the transfer portal opening January 2, 2026. LSU needs a new quarterback via the portal, and the College Football Playoff is in its quarterfinal stage. LSU Staff and Ole Miss Tampering Allegations There are significant tensions and allegations of tampering as six LSU-bound assistant coaches are currently coaching Ole Miss in the College Football Playoff. Conflict of Interest: The situation creates an unprecedented dynamic where coaches preparing to work for LSU are also working with their current Ole Miss players, leading to concerns about under-the-table deals and recruiting. Preventative Measures: Ole Miss staff members not going to LSU are reportedly sitting in on individual meetings to "make sure there's no tampering," and some school officials have joked about needing the FBI to bug phones. Key Players Mentioned: Ole Miss quarterback Trinidad Chambliss and running back Kewan Lacy are specific players whose potential transfer to LSU is a major topic of discussion in media reports. Kiffin's Comments: New LSU head coach Lane Kiffin has publicly avoided direct comments about specific Ole Miss players but has generally discussed the need to use the portal effectively. Transfer Portal QB Updates (Ahead of Jan. 2) The transfer portal officially opens on January 2, 2026, for FBS and FCS players, which is a critical date for LSU to rebuild its roster, especially at quarterback. LSU Needs: The Tigers have a depleted QB room, with only two QBs currently on the roster, creating an urgent need for Kiffin to secure a transfer quarterback. Trinidad Chambliss: The Ole Miss starting QB is seeking an NCAA waiver for a fifth year of eligibility. If granted, he is a prime target for LSU, which would reunite him with Kiffin and his former offensive staff. Current Roster Movement: LSU has already seen QB Colin Hurley and several other players, including promising offensive linemen and wide receivers, announce their intention to enter the portal when the window opens. Strategy: Kiffin's plan is to leverage the transfer portal heavily, aiming to mirror his success at Ole Miss where he consistently brought in top-four transfer classes.
