536 - How to Captivate Someone on a Gut Level: Renowned "Fight Club" Author Chuck Palahniuk Releases The Best Book on Writing I've Ever Read (And I've Read Them All) Jan 30, 2020
    Show notes

Chuck Palahniuk is the author of Fight Club... a cult classic. And one of my favorite books. I felt so lucky getting to watch him breakdown storytelling. Because he does it in a way that goes beneath the surface. He takes you into what it means to be human. He makes you feel seen and like your life, as messy as it is, makes sense. Now he has a new book called, "Consider This: Moments in My Writing Life after Which Everything Was Different." Which not only has all the best writing advice I've ever seen, it also has a list of recommended books in the back. Chuck and I read through the list. He asked me, "Have you read this one?" And said the title. I said, "No." He said, "I'm so jealous. It's like you're about to have sex for the first time." I can't wait. I write about all my podcasts! 535 - "There's More to Life Than This.": Run-D.M.C.'s Iconic Rapper, Joseph 'Rev' Simmons & Wife Justine Simmons on "Old School Love," How to Do It & Why it Makes a Happier Love Life Jan 28, 2020
    Show notes

Joseph 'Rev' Simmons is Run D.M.C.'s iconic rapper. He just wrote a book with this wife Justine Simmons called "Old School Love: And Why it Works." I like this interview because they're relationship is on full display here. You see they argue and work through it. You hear them banter and talk over each other the way real couples do. And then you see how caring they are for each other. So you'll get the advice and the examples all at once. And in real-time. AND of course I asked Rev all about his rap career, fame, rising to the top, letting go of drugs, excess, gluttony and finding God. I write about all my podcasts! 532 - How to Swap Planning for Permission. And Go After What You Actually Want in Life: I Tell Sean Kim on His Podcast "Growth Minds" Jan 23, 2020
    Show notes

There's a lot I want to accomplish in life. And I bet there's a lot you want to accomplish, too. So what's stopping us? Usually, in my own life, I can boil it down to one thing. It's not focus. It's not having some super-specific morning routine. Or 8 hours of sleep (although that's important)... I accomplish things when I give myself permission to accomplish things. So what does that mean? It means I start doing and stop thinking about what it would look like to do something. So in this episode, you'll hear Sean Kim, host of "Growth Minds" podcast interview me about how to swap planning for permission and go for what you actually want in life. Everything is changing all the time. So how do we keep up? How do we learn to stay ahead of the future? That's what Jamie Metzl is here to tell us. Jamie is a tech futurist, self-taught genomics expert, economist and the bestselling author of "Hacking Darwin," which is all about genetic engineering and "the frontiers of biology." But what's most important here is that Jamie didn't go to school for genomics. He's self-taught. And he skipped the line by be self-taught AND a skilled sci-fi writer. Combining both made his book his #1. And opened the doors to new opportunities. That's what learning is about. So I ask Jamie to teach me how he learns. So we can be better learners, too.
