Furness Show 3-6: Breaking Kraken news, Caitlin Clark and Thomas Drance Mar 07, 2024
Show notes BREAKING NEWS: The Kraken trade Alex Wennberg to the NY Rangers for a second rounder in 2024, a 4th in 2025 and retain 50% on Wennberg's salary. As we look back on the NFL Combine and ahead to the NFL Draft Ian remarks on how difficult it is to scout a franchise quarterback. We listen back to Kurt Warner's evaluation of Geno Smith and Drew Lock. What does it tell us about the Seahawks' future at that position? It tells Ian that the two QBs they have are placeholders for the future - and this is the draft to find your new guy. Caitlin Clark becomes the all-time leading scorer in college basketball history, among both men and women. She is the only person in team athletics that can sell out a stadium - so why are we comparing her to Pete Maravich? Ian says she should stand on her own. Plus, if ESPN and FOX are trying to put together an NIL deal to keep her in college...where do we draw the line? Thomas Drance, The Athletic joins to give us his take on the Alex Wennberg trade. He takes us behind the scenes of the NHL trade deadline, as he's experienced it from both the PR and journalistic side of things. He explains that draft picks are such a common currency in NHL trades because of the lack of risk. The Wennberg return from the Rangers makes perfect sense to him.

Furness Show 3-5: Seahawks news, Hugh Millen and Gary Parrish Mar 05, 2024
    Show notes

Hugh Millen joins Ian to react to the Seahawks moves we just saw happen as they announce they're parting ways with Jamal Adams, Quandre Diggs and Will Dissly. Hugh is open to the team bringing back Dissly and Diggs on restructured deals, but he didn't like the Adams acquisition from day 1. Hugh continues breaking down Jamal Adams as a football player, and why he didn't like the move the Seahawks made for him in the first place. The price was simply too high for even the potential of his output, especially for a safety. Gary Parrish, CBS Sports joins Ian to give the latest outlook on the way the tournament play looks to be shaping up. Naturally, we want the latest on the FINAL Pac-12 tournament as we know it, what the seeding looks like for the Cougars and other bubble teams that could sneak in.

Kurt Warner joins Ian Furness Mar 04, 2024

Kurt Warner, NFL Network tells Ian what he sees different in the way college quarterbacks are evaluated as they approach the NFL Draft. Penix jumped up to the number three spot after the combine, according to Warner. Kurt also shares his thoughts on Geno Smith and Drew Lock. Finally, the Broncos officially let Russell Wilson know he'll be released on March 13th and Kurt tells us where he sees him in the future.

There was a lot to experience over the weekend, especially as the NFL Combine wrapped up. Mollywhop Monday! Nathan Bishop and Chris Crawford join the show to discuss just how strong the Mariners rotation is and where they still might need to make some adjustments. Furness Show 3-1 with Mike Benton: Kraken win, Matt Brash injury and John Forslund Mar 01, 2024
    Show notes

Benton is rocking a 22 year old sweatshirt today and we share some throwback stories. Last night we saw the playoff version of Philipp Grubauer and the wealth of riches in goal. Benton explains how goalies are not so alike to NFL quarterbacks as some people think. The Kraken are right there on the cusp of the playoffs. Who will we see in goal tomorrow against Edmonton? Plus, will we ever see a power NCAA conference in the west again? Matt Brash will not need surgery and that's welcome news. While he'll likely start on the IL, there's a potential for him to come back this season. In the meantime, should the Mariners go after Ryne Stanek to plug the gap? John Forslund, ROOT Sports Kraken Play by Play joins to give the lay of Kraken land as they claw their way toward the playoffs. He thinks there's a good chance Andre Burakovsky plays tomorrow night. The Kraken are likely feeling the pressure of both the trade deadline and the need to win, which can affect the mindset of a time. However, the Kraken have been fighting through it. Which teams ahead of the Kraken are most likely to drop a few? He also previews tomorrow's game against the Oilers.

Furness Show 2-29: Stewart Mandel, Pac-2 News and Rob Rang Feb 29, 2024
    Show notes

New Pac-12 Commissioner Teresa Gould held a joint press conference with WSU President Kirk Schulz today and we listen into some of it as it pertains to not only the future of the two schools left, but the NCAA overall. Stewart Mandel, The Athletic joins to tell us the latest on the potential college football playoff potential. He discusses the ripple effect of the coaching carousel - specifically Kalen DeBoer at Alabama and Jedd Fisch at UW. Plus, he weighs in on the NCAA tournament and the conferences who want to see it expand. We listen back to Mike Garafolo's comments to Puck and Jim regarding Geno Smith's future, which gave us an even stronger indication that Geno Smith will be in Seattle in the future. John Schneider indicates he's committed to Geno, but Garafolo thinks he's going to hand the reigns to Mike Macdonald and allow his head coach to make the call. Rob Rang, FOX Sports thinks we'll see Byron Murphy excel in the combine and will be a first-round selection. He also sees the Seahawks prioritizing resigning Leonard Williams. He breaks down what scouts and executives are truly looking for this weekend in Indianapolis. Interestingly enough, he says the offensive tackle group is the most talented of all the positions in the draft.

Furness Show 2-28: HS Hoops, Seahawks Latest, Mick Hoffman Feb 29, 2024
    Show notes

Ian is down at the Tacoma Dome at the site of the High School basketball tournament and he's grateful the station still places importance on it. Are things already falling apart for the Mariners? Ian thinks we're in for a wild ride with the Seahawks the next three months - they'll do some obvious things, but there will be some surprises. One thing we are pretty sure of - Geno Smith will be here this fall. If you could choose one move for the Seahawks to make this off-season, other than cutting Jamal Adams, what would it be? Ian says resign Leonard Williams and Jess says draft a quarterback in the third round. Listeners weigh in. Mick Hoffman, Executive Director of the WIAA joins from the Spokane site of the HS Basketball tournament. He talks about the evolution of the event and how big it can continue to get in the future.

Furness Show 2-27: NFL Combine, Corbin Smith and Gary Parrish Feb 27, 2024
    Show notes

John Schneider spoke at the NFL Combine today and Ian tries to read between the lines, especially when it comes to the quarterback. What does it mean that "Geno Smith is the quarterback until he's not? Corbin Smith, Seahawks Maven and Locked on Seahawks joins us from the combine and thinks it's pretty clear that Geno Smith will be with the Seahawks this year. Where does Drew Lock fit in? There are other options for Lock around the league, but Corbin doesn't see any natural landing spots around the league that would be better than Seattle. Corbin also gives us some insight on what's next for Will Dissly, and knows the Seahawks will have to do something with his contract to be able to afford him. Gary Parrish, CBS Sports joins Ian to give us the latest landscape as we are on the cusp of March. What do the early looks at the potential seedings tell us? Plus, who are the brightest stars that we'll see next in the NBA? People might be surprised by what Gary thinks about Bronny James.

Furness Show 2-26: Mollywhop Monday, Chris Crawford and Nathan Bishop, College Hoops Feb 26, 2024
    Show notes

Heartbreaker for the Cougs on Saturday night losing to Arizona State and it still hurts Ian. The Seahawks aren't heading to the combine this year under their new coaching staff and Ian doesn't think it's a huge deal with the way things have changed. Ian can't wait to see what Michael Penix does in his throwing session. Mollywhop Monday! Nathan Bishop and Chris Crawford join us for an early look at the Mariners as they took the field for the first time in spring training this weekend. Chris is concerned with who stays healthy coming out of camp above all and calls this potentially one of the most important spring trainings for the team. The guys give their 'on paper' grades for the Mariners' off-season. Nate feels as though this roster has more answers than he's seen from the team in a really long time. The Cougs broke our hearts on Saturday night, but we'll get over it. Ian had the chance to talk to Kyle Smith last week and asked the money question, what would he tell Cougar fans who fear his departure? His answer shows commitment to Pullman, but Ian is worried that another school in the state might actually makes sense. Also, what in the world is the NCAA considering doing to the tournament? Jay Bilas torches them for even thinking about it. Ian knows that it's the interactive component that makes March Madness special and watering down the tournament would take away from it.
