EPISODE 150 - Interview Tips, Set The Example, Toastmasters with Guest CO-HOST - Kimberly Winters

Kimbery and I chat about taking the lead as podcasters and not asking anything of our audience that we as podcasters are not actively doing as well - if you ask for ratings and reviews, have you done so for others yourself? We also chat about some interview tips that we have picked up on over the years and what it means to shout out a fellow podcaster on your show - we all should do this more and encourage new listeners to fall in love with podcasting as a whole

EPISODE 149 - Dave's Suggested Audiobook - Everybody Has a Podcast (Except You) - Laugh and Learn

Check out a great audio book! Many books about podcasting are completely boring! Not this one!

From the number-one New York Times best-selling McElroy Brothers, creators of the hit podcasts My Brother, My Brother and Me and The Adventure Zone, comes a helpful and hilarious how-to podcast guide covering everything you need to know to make, produce, edit, and promote a podcast...and get rich* doing it! (*Results not guaranteed.)

Justin, Travis, and Griffin McElroy made their names as “advice giving brothers who have no business giving advice” (New York Times) on the hit podcast My Brother, My Brother and Me. But while they may not have the best relationship or workplace advice, they certainly make you laugh, and they do know a thing or two about podcasting.

In fact, the McElroy Brothers have spent the last decade making podcasts, including My Brother, My Brother and Me; The Adventure Zone; Sawbones; and more. From their start, independently producing and releasing the early episodes of My Brother, My Brother and Me, to their 11 currently available podcasts, the McElroys have become experts in creating successful podcasts. And now, they want to share what they’ve learned with you.

In Everybody Has a Podcast (Except You), the McElroy Brothers will walk you through the process of turning an idea into ear candy for legions of fans, sharing their expertise on everything from deciding on an effective name (definitely not something like My Brother, My Brother and Me), to what type of microphone to use (definitely not one from the video game Rock Band), to making lots and lots of money (spoiler: you probably won’t).

A must-listen for anyone interested in podcasting, Everybody Has a Podcast (Except You) shares the keys to success as well as the mistakes to avoid and draws on the vast experiences of three of the funniest and most successful podcasters working today.

E148 - Podcasting With Your Spouse and Having Impact with Guest CO-HOSTS - Grace and Alex Tran from the Let's Unpack That Podcast Nov 02, 2023
    Show notes

EPISODE 148 - Podcasting With Your Spouse and Having Impact with Guest CO-HOSTS - Grace and Alex Tran from the Let's Unpack That Podcast

This episode introduces Grace and Alex Tran, the married co-hosts behind “Let’s Unpack That,” and explores what it looks like to build a podcast together while pursuing meaningful impact. Their story begins long before the microphone was ever turned on, rooted in everyday conversations, shared values, and a growing desire to help others live out their faith in a deeper, more intentional way.

What started as casual discussions during daily life eventually revealed a shared calling. Both Grace and Alex carried a vision of using their life experiences to encourage and inspire others, even before they met. That alignment became the foundation for both their relationship and their podcast. Their journey to marriage itself reflects that intentionality, from meeting online across continents to navigating long distance and ultimately building a life together grounded in faith and purpose.

The podcast emerged as a natural extension of who they already were as a couple. Rather than positioning themselves as experts, they invite listeners into honest, ongoing conversations about real life topics including emotional health, relationships, and spiritual growth. Their goal is not perfection but authenticity, creating space where listeners feel seen, understood, and encouraged.

Co-hosting as spouses brings both strengths and challenges. Grace leans into her background in communication and content creation, often leading the vision and structure of the show, while Alex contributes thoughtful reflection and a coaching mindset. Together, they balance each other, creating conversations that feel both grounded and dynamic. Their differences have also led to personal growth, with Alex developing more confidence in speaking and Grace learning to embrace vulnerability in a more personal, less performative way.

They also share practical insight into how they run their podcast, emphasizing that starting does not require expensive equipment or perfect conditions. Instead, clarity of purpose, understanding your audience, and taking consistent small steps matter far more than technical perfection. They highlight the importance of knowing who you are speaking to and why, as this becomes the anchor that sustains the podcast through challenges and doubts.

Throughout the episode, a recurring theme is impact over metrics. While growth and numbers can be useful, they stress that true success lies in the unseen influence a podcast can have on individuals and, ultimately, the ripple effect beyond what can be measured.

Key takeaway: Building a podcast with your spouse is less about perfect execution and more about shared purpose. When you focus on meaningful conversations, clear intention, and genuine connection, the impact of your voice can extend far beyond what you can see.

E147 - Lessons After Four Years of Podcasting, Asking For Money, What Really Matters with Guest CO-HOST - Rob Jones Host of The Family Vacationer

This episode features a conversation with Rob Jones, host of The Family Vacationer, reflecting on more than four years of podcasting and the lessons learned along the way. What begins as a discussion about travel quickly becomes a deeper look at what truly matters when building and sustaining a podcast.

Rob shares how his show was born from both a personal passion for family travel and a desire to create meaningful experiences for listeners. His podcast focuses on reducing the stress of family vacations by offering practical advice, destination insights, and honest reflections drawn from his own experiences as a parent, including navigating travel with a child who has ADHD. These real-life challenges have shaped many of his most impactful episodes, turning personal setbacks into valuable content for others.

Looking back, Rob emphasizes that the hardest part of starting was simply beginning. Despite having ideas, plans, and even a co-host in place, he delayed launching due to self-doubt and technical concerns. His advice is clear: start before you feel ready, accept that early episodes will be imperfect, and improve through experience.

A major theme throughout the conversation is the danger of focusing too heavily on numbers and monetization. Rob reflects on how chasing downloads and revenue early on led to missteps, including experimenting with ads that ultimately hurt his listenership. Over time, his perspective shifted. He now values the journey, the relationships built, and the knowledge gained far more than analytics.

The discussion also highlights the importance of knowing your audience, staying flexible, and being willing to pivot. Rob shares how the pandemic forced a complete change in his format, leading to guest interviews that ultimately strengthened the show. He also reinforces that podcasting should remain enjoyable, encouraging creators to take breaks when needed and communicate openly with their audience to avoid burnout.

Monetization is approached with caution. Rather than aggressively pursuing income, Rob focuses on providing value and building trust, recognizing that not every podcast needs to generate revenue to be successful. He also points out that success looks different for everyone and should be defined personally, not by comparison to others.

At its core, this episode is about redefining success in podcasting. It is less about downloads and dollars, and more about connection, growth, and creating something meaningful for both the host and the listener.

    Key takeaway:
Success in podcasting is not measured by numbers, but by the value you create, the relationships you build, and your willingness to keep showing up, learning, and evolving over time.

E146 - Podcast Seasons - Are They The Best Option For My Podcast Oct 23, 2023
    Show notes

EPISODE 146 - Podcast Seasons - Are They The Best Option For My Podcast

Should I podcast in seasons? Personally, at this point, I don't. Two of my 7 podcasts actually have 3 to 4 episodes a week going out every week - that is a bit extreme, I know, I know!

Just because I don't use seasons does by no means equate to seasons as a "bad idea", seasons might be a great idea for you - and right there sums up why podcasting is great. THERE IS NO RIGHT WAY TO PODCAST! You are in charge of your podcast! Do what works right for you!

I share my thoughts and a couple cautions around podcasting in seasons here on episode 137! I would love to hear your comments over at our website!

In this episode we touch on the following...

    What's a Season in Podcasting?

A podcast season is like a bunch of episodes released together, and then there's a break before the next batch. It's similar to how TV shows have a bunch of episodes, and then you have to wait for the next season to come out. This way, listeners have time to enjoy the episodes without the pressure of a new one every week.

    How Seasons Work

In a podcast season, there's a specific time when episodes come out, usually lasting a couple of months. During this time, no new episodes are released. After the season ends, a new one begins. However, not all episodes have to be part of a season. Some can be released randomly whenever the podcaster wants.

    When Do Episodes Come Out?

The timing of episodes depends on when they're ready. Podcasters release episodes when they are finished and edited. Seasons help listeners know when to expect new episodes. Without seasons, it's less predictable, and podcasters have to stick to a strict schedule.

    Why Use Seasons?

Using seasons in podcasting has some benefits. Listeners know when to expect new episodes, which keeps them interested and excited. It also gives podcasters time to focus on making new episodes without rushing.

How Long Should a Season Be?

Most podcast seasons are around two to three months long, but it varies. Some shows release episodes regularly, while others do it every few months. It depends on what works best for your podcast.

    Planning Your Podcast

Before starting your podcast, decide if you want to use seasons and how many you'll have. This helps you set a schedule and keep your podcast organized.

    In Conclusion

Podcasting in seasons is a great way to keep your podcast interesting for listeners. It shows that you're active and always creating new content. If you want to keep your podcast exciting, using seasons might be a good idea.

E145 - Apple Seed Series - Impact Your Podcast with three actionable tips for implementing continuous improvement in your podcasting journey - Part 10 Oct 22, 2023
    Show notes

EPISODE 145 - Apple Seed Series - Impact Your Podcast with three actionable tips for implementing continuous improvement in your podcasting journey - Part 10

Continuous improvement is a crucial aspect of podcasting that involves refining your content, delivery, and overall approach based on feedback and changing circumstances. Here are three actionable tips for implementing continuous improvement in your podcasting journey:

    1. Feedback Loop Enhancement:

      • Tip: Create multiple feedback channels to gather diverse perspectives from your listeners.
      • Action: In addition to encouraging listeners to share their thoughts through emails or social media, consider setting up a dedicated feedback form on your podcast website. This form can include specific questions about episode topics, guest suggestions, and overall podcast experience. Regularly review the feedback you receive and use it to identify patterns, strengths, and areas for improvement.
    2. Thematic Evolution:

      • Tip: Stay attuned to changing trends and evolving interests within your target audience.
      • Action: Set aside time to research and monitor your niche or industry. Follow relevant news, social media discussions, and emerging topics. When you notice shifts or emerging trends, incorporate them into your podcast's themes or adapt your message to address these changes. This keeps your content fresh and relevant, and demonstrates your commitment to staying current and engaged with your listeners.
    3. Segment Experimentation:

      • Tip: Test different podcast segments or formats to gauge audience preferences and refine your message delivery.
      • Action: Introduce new segments or experimental episodes periodically to gather data on listener engagement. For example, you could alternate between solo episodes, interview formats, and panel discussions. Analyze metrics like episode downloads, listener feedback, and social media interactions to identify which segments resonate most with your audience. Use this information to fine-tune your podcast's structure and content mix for maximum impact.

By consistently seeking feedback, adapting to changes, and experimenting with new approaches, you'll demonstrate your dedication to providing value and relevance to your listeners. Remember that continuous improvement is an ongoing process that requires flexibility and a willingness to learn and evolve. Over time, these actions will help you refine your podcast message, strengthen audience engagement, and create a lasting impact.
