How to be happy (Philippians 4:10-23) Nov 27, 2025

Everyone wants to be happy. Don’t you? Yet happiness seems one of the most elusive feelings in the world for most people.

One of the most shocking and powerful aspects of the apostle Paul was his ability to live happy. This guy didn’t fake it. He didn’t hide it. He didn’t struggle with it. He simply found the secret to happiness and couldn’t wait to share it with us. While the whole letter of Philippians is aimed at joy, this last lesson focuses in on happiness and how to achieve it. This is gold and it’s ours for the taking in Christ Jesus!

Discussion Questions:

How did Paul always rejoice?

Can you remember the definition given for contentment? How would you define contentment?

Do you remember the five (or some) obstacles to contentment? What hinders you from contentment?

What are some things you practice to grow in contentment?

Social media is one of the obstacles to joy in modern life. How’s your relationships with social media and in what ways do you need to make changes to it?

Consider these thoughts and write down what comes to mind. Jesus + nothing = everything. Contentment is the bold affirmation that my Father knows best. We’re all going to go through various seasons in our life. The key to joy is to learn what Paul learned, which is to be content.

How to overcome worry (Philippians 4:1-9) Nov 20, 2025

Most Christians spend way too much time worrying. You were meant for more than a life of worry. Find out how to get victory over worry in this lesson.

Discussion Questions:

What is the most difficult sin in your life to overcome?
What are you worried about lately? Why? What does God’s word say about that particular matter?
What are some reasons why you should not worry?
What qualities does Paul urge us to set our minds on?
How could you strengthen your prayer life?
Consider these thoughts and write down what comes to mind. It is a sin to worry, and it is a command not to be anxious. The way to overcome worry is not by effort of will, but by total and complete dependence on the Lord.

Moving past your past (Philippians 3:12-21) Nov 13, 2025

Yesterday. One word that means so much. One word that can shackle you in despair and keep you from moving forward. Isn’t it time to move past your past? Isn’t it time to embrace your future?

No matter how dark your past may be, God’s love reaches deeper than your deepest secrets. He’s for you no matter what. Today we begin to move past the past. I hope you’re ready to step forward.

Discussion Questions:

Ask the Lord: “What are you trying to teach me right now? How can I apply the principles from this study into my life today?”

What kind of emotion do you feel when it comes to your past failures? The greatest lie we believe is that we can’t be used effectively because of our sin. God’s word is truth. Read Rom. 8:1-2; 1 John 1:7-9; 1 John 2:1-2. What’s God’s perspective on this?

Do you need to repent of sin in order to be able to move past your past? When you repent, you are agreeing with God that what you’ve been doing is wrong. But if you genuinely ask for forgiveness, you don’t have to live in a place of condemnation; instead, do what Romans 8 says, which is to set your mind on the Spirit because that’s where life and peace are (Rom. 8:6). Write down a prayer of praise to God for his forgiveness!

Consider these thoughts and write down what comes to mind. Guilt will not change you, repentance will. As long as you are not dead, your story is not over yet.

God’s dream for you (Philippians 1:27-30) Oct 02, 2025

Do you have dreams? I know I do. When I was a kid, I used to dream of saving a life on a plane. Don’t ask me why, but it’s true. The closest I’ve come to that is handing out orange juice to a diabetic on a plane. What can I say? You take what you get.

When it comes to dreams, does it surprise you that God has dreams for you? Like the loving Father that He is, God lovingly longs for you to know certain things and live a certain way. He has a future filled with hope for you. Do you believe that?

Why is this happening to me (Philippians 1:12-18) Sep 18, 2025

Why is this happening to me? Ever asked that question? I have! Whether I’m stuck in traffic or on the line with a customer service rep, it seems like life affords me plenty of opportunities to ask why. And as annoying as some days in life can be, the reality is that other days are just plain hard. It’s easy to wonder why. Why has God allowed me to go through this?

If anyone could have asked why, it was the apostle Paul. Here was this guy who had given his life to Jesus, and given his soul to others, and found himself stuck in a prison cell. In today’s lesson, we’re going to see why it never even occurred to Paul to ask why. He was too busy living pointing to Jesus. He was too busy making each moment count for the Lord. I don’t know about you, but that’s the kind of untouchable joy that my heart longs for.

Rest in the midst of chaos [RESOLVED] May 08, 2025

One of the greatest gifts God has given us is the gift of rest, yet most of us are intent on living in the chaos.

Chaos is a typical day in the typical life of the typical Christian. But we can be busy without being chaotic. Our days could be packed and not feel out of control. After all, Jesus was busy. His days were jam-packed with ministry and people and demands.

Our aim isn’t to take a vacation to a peaceful destination and refuse to come back as the means to escape chaos. What is far better is to resolve to find rest in the midst of our chaos. And it all starts when we agree to let go of what we think should happen in our lives and yield to God’s perfect place for us: the place of quiet trust.

Speak up when it’s easier not to [RESOLVED] Apr 03, 2025

You and I have a responsibility. We know the way, the truth, and the life. We have been given grace upon grace. We have been loved and accepted and forgiven and set free. Anyone who has come face-to-face with God’s goodness and embraced it knows that we have a duty—even more, a privilege—to share this truth with others.

It’s easier to stay silent. It’s easier to aim for acceptance. It’s easier to hide in the shadows hoping that someone else, somewhere else, will be the one to speak the truth.

But if we really believe what we say we believe, then we have a duty as followers of Jesus Christ to speak the truth when it’s easier not to. Anything less than that is stark disbelief.

Yield when it’s my right [RESOLVED] Mar 27, 2025

Fundamentally, the call to discipleship is a call to yield. It’s a call to self-denial. It’s a call to say “you go first” even when it might be our right to go first.

This is what it means to be a Christian, a fully surrendered follower of Jesus. It’s a radical all-in total takeover of who you are with no turning back. Anything remotely close to this will demand your unwavering resolve and the belief that God is the only treasure worth selling everything for.

If you’re serious about changing your world for Christ, and if you’re serious about living what you say you believe, then it’s time to resolve to yield to God in every detail of your life—in the big things and the small.

Obey when it’s not popular [RESOLVED] Mar 20, 2025

One of my favorite sayings is this: Your walk talks and your talk talks, but your walk talks louder than your talk talks. Simply stated, obedience is walking the talk. It’s moving past words to action. It’s actually living out what you say you believe.

What would our world look like if every follower of Jesus Christ resolved to obey God, especially when it’s not popular? How would our world be different if every one of us resolved to live by faith, walking the talk and not just talking the talk, and refused to give in to our personal appetites?

Today is a chance for you to resolve afresh to obey God, no matter what.

Love when it’s inconvenient [RESOLVED] Mar 13, 2025

Jesus made it clear: the most powerful way to impact the world is by loving others, even when it’s inconvenient, uncomfortable, and messy. (John 13:35)

In a culture that’s self-seeking, the way to stand out is by doing the opposite: to pick up a towel, lean low, and wash feet.

But let’s be real—this kind of love is impossible without first understanding and receiving God’s never-ending love for us. We can’t pour out what we haven’t first received. When we understand God’s love for us, the power of His love can be unleashed through us, transforming our world. This kind of love is unstoppable.

Acts 28 – Upside down ending – Part 1 [UPSIDE DOWN SERIES] Nov 07, 2024

Acts 28 describes the final chapter of Paul’s journey to Rome after his arrest. Following a shipwreck, Paul and his companions land first on the island of Malta and then finally in Rome where he is placed under house arrest but given some freedom to receive visitors.

Paul spends the next two years in Rome, preaching about the Kingdom of God and teaching about Jesus with boldness and without hindrance. This chapter highlights God’s protection over Paul, the spread of the gospel in the midst of uncomfortable circumstances, and the fulfillment of God’s promise to bring Paul to Rome. Take a listen!

Last week, we began exploring ten principles for living based on Paul’s missionary journeys and messages. Today, we’ll wrap up our discussion on his life manifesto. Here’s what Paul’s life was all about:

Serve with humility despite what you think you deserve.
Be bold in preaching the gospel despite the persecution.
Focus on the message despite the improbability of the hearers.
Be compelled by the Spirit despite not knowing what lies ahead.
Be abandoned to the faith despite a wretched past.
Be attentive to the flock despite the attack.
Be attached to the Word despite the distractions.
Be dependent on the Lord despite your desperate need.
Fix your eyes on the Lord despite the threat of the future.
Be thankful for the prison because of the opportunity (to testify to others).

In today’s episode on Acts 18-19, Paul starts his third missionary journey. When we contrast much of contemporary evangelism with Paul’s, its shallowness shows up.

Our evangelism tends to be focused on simply inviting people to church. Paul also took the gospel out into the secular world. Our evangelism appeals to the emotions for a decision without an adequate basis of understanding. Paul taught, reasoned, and tried to persuade. Our evangelism is superficial, making brief encounters and expecting quick results. Paul stayed in Corinth and Ephesus for 5 years, faithfully sowing gospel seed and in due time reaping a harvest.

I am confident because He is faithful [THE CONFIDENCE SERIES #3] Sep 20, 2023

One of the greatest battles we encounter as followers of Christ is the struggle against unbelief.

When our prayers go seemingly answered, when we don’t see the results we hoped for, when life hurls one curveball after another, we’re tempted to succumb to fear, disappointment, and to forget who is on our side.

In Hebrews chapter 3, the author is making a point that one of the most effective ways to fight unbelief is to consider Jesus, to think carefully about Him (Hebrews 3:1). By considering Him we will come to the realization that He is faithful, and that is all the confidence we need in the face of anything that comes our way.

I am confident because He is in control [THE CONFIDENCE SERIES #2] Sep 13, 2023

Today we’re continuing The Confidence Series with a look at Hebrews chapter 2 where we will recognize another reason we can be confident: because God is in control.

Much like us today, the early Christian believers were living in tumultuous times. They confronted injustice, endured suffering, and grappled with a sense of uncertainty, all of which tempted them to forsake their faith.

In this context, the author of Hebrews reminds them, and us, that even when things look messy, when life is challenging, and our suffering seems to have no end, God is in control, and we can freely trust Him!

Our confidence does not hinge on our immediate circumstances but is rooted in the One who holds the entirety of the universe and its unfolding history in His hands.

In Matthew 11, John the Baptist’s story looked like it ended badly from a human perspective. Here was an individual whom Jesus considered to be the greatest among all men (Mat. 11:11) stuck in prison, hoping to be delivered, only to be beheaded instead.

From the viewpoint of God, John's final outcome was intricately designed with divine purpose, his life was profoundly meaningful, and his calling was successfully carried out.

Unshaken faith when the outcome looks iffy at best [UNSHAKEN 23] Jun 14, 2023

Sometimes we don’t know how things are going to turn out in our life.

In Daniel 3 we encounter three men—Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego—facing a situation where their fate hangs precariously between potential salvation and possible demise. Regardless of the outcome, will they remain obedient to God?

When we find ourselves in that space where the outcome looks “iffy” at best, God is asking us to make certain decisions that will allow us to stand unshaken in our faith, knowing that obedience will not guarantee us the outcome we might want, but God’s faithful and abiding presence.

There are so many things that can weigh down on us and steal our hope, things like our present problems, our worries and fears, our glaring loneliness, our deep disappointments, or our failures and unmet expectations.

In Lamentations 3 we find a powerful example of a man who had all the reasons to despair and yet proclaimed “‘The Lord is my portion’, says my soul, ‘therefore I will hope in him’” (v. 24).

As we look at a man accustomed with pain and loneliness in today’s podcast, I believe our perspective on the difficult seasons of our life will change.

When I feel overwhelmed [NEGATIVE EMOTIONS #8] Apr 05, 2023

We all face overwhelming circumstances in our life that make us feel afraid, trapped, helpless, uncertain if we can make it much longer.

Do you feel like your problems are bigger than your abilities? Does it seem like your enemies are stronger than your allies? Are your emotions heavier that you can process?

King Jehoshaphat can relate. In 2 Chronicles 20 we’re told about the time when he got news about an army coming against him and his people, an army he knew he could not win against on his own. He felt overwhelmed, and rightly so. But his response in this situation is remarkable and teaches us some powerful truths about how to deal with our own challenges.

Learning from our desert fathers [DESERT SERIES #6] Mar 08, 2023

The desert seasons are common in the Christian life. In fact, a careful look at Scripture reveals that no one was mightily used by God until that person became deeply acquainted with the desert.

In Hebrews 11 we encounter several men and women who faced incredibly difficult circumstances, yet they were not moved to despair by the things they faced in this world.

These desert fathers and mothers remind us of some principles that will help us see the desert not as a place to escape from but as God’s intentional place to accomplish His purposes in us.

Unshaken faith when I’m facing the impossible [UNSHAKEN #9] Aug 03, 2022

If you’ve been a believer for some time, you are probably well accustomed with the story of the fall of Jericho in Joshua 6. God brought an incredible and miraculous victory for his people, and the long-awaited promise to enter a land flowing with milk and honey finally starts to be materialized.

But before this victory takes place there is a pause in chapter 5 that can be easily missed. God is stopping his people and requires them to prepare spiritually for what’s about to happen.

From this passage we can grasp that before experiencing fresh victories in our lives, there are three things that need to happen first. Take a listen!

Unshaken when my faith looks ridiculous at best [UNSHAKEN #7] Jul 20, 2022

In Numbers 13 we find that twelve men were sent out to spy the Promised Land and come back with two perspectives of the situation. The majority acknowledge that the land is fruitful but it’s impossible to take because it’s occupied by powerful people, while they seem like grasshoppers in comparison (Num. 13:33). Two men however, Caleb and Joshua, believe the promise and power of God to bring them into the Promise Land, in spite of any difficulty. It turns out, all of them experienced exactly what they confessed.

In Genesis 32 we encounter Jacob facing his greatest fear – the fear of meeting his estranged brother Esau and suffer his wrath for having exploited him on two occasions. In the middle of this darkest of nights, Jacob comes to the realization that the only place to wrestle with his fears and find breakthrough is in prayer. And as he wrestles, he learns that his fear is overcome when he allows God to bring him to a place of brokenness and surrender.

If you feel paralyzed by fear, you too are called to draw closer to God and trust that even when you feel like you can’t hang on to God anymore, He’s got his hold on you.

In Genesis 12 we find God calling a man, Abram, to leave his country and family and follow Him instead to “the land that I will show you.” Without the complete roadmap for his future, Abram responds in faith and becomes an example of what it means to trust God with our lives, even when we can’t see the way.

Soul Sisters #3: Rage Age Apr 20, 2022

We can all agree, we are living in a rage age. Whether on the road, on social media, in political discourse, in the church or among friends, it seems we have lost the virtues of kindness, humility, and self-control, and replaced them with accepting, respecting, and even encouraging outbursts of emotion in the name of being “right.”

But a quick search about what the Scripture says about anger will point out that anger is not the way of a Christ-follower, not even when clearly wronged.
