Goodbye 2021 and Lord of the Rings Turns 20 Dec 15, 2021
    Show notes

On this episode of The Hollywood Outsider podcast, we're discussing the 20th anniversary of the beloved cinematic nerd achievement Lord of the Rings, the beginning of one of the ballsiest choices Hollywood has ever made: filming a fantasy trilogy, all at once, when fantasy like this was not popular at all. And make no mistake, you can thank this series for Game of Thrones, Wheel of Time, Witcher, and numerous other fantasy shows getting greenlit. It showed there was an audience for it as long as you did it right.

Also this week: we say goodbye to 2021 by discussing Kevin Feige and Disney's inconsistency on whether the Netflix Marvel shows are connected to the MCU, the disaster that is known as entertainment journalism, and podcasting officially becoming mainstream by showing up in film & television, as well as Movie Innuendo returns for a Christmas edition.

Also announced on this episode, The Hollywood Outsider presents... Bad Movie Night! Coming to your podcast feed on December 20, 2021 from the vault. Discussed on this episode

    Scream 25th Anniversary Special Dec 13, 2021
    Show notes

    What's your favorite scary movie?

For millions, it's Wes Craven's SCREAM! Take a listen to this special episode of The Hollywood Outsider podcast as we discuss the 25th anniversary of this classic, and our thoughts on the upcoming 2022 film.

On December 20, 1996, director Wes Craven re-invented the slasher-horror genre with this funny, clever and scary film that spawned a legacy of its own. After a series of mysterious deaths, an offbeat group of scary movie fans become the target of a masked killer. As the body count begins, it's clear that the rules must be followed, and everyone's a suspect. Neve Campbell, David Arquette, Courteney Cox, Matthew Lillard, Rose McGowan, Skeet Ulrich, and Drew Barrymore star in this original film that launched a franchise and, in many ways, saved horror.

    The 2021 Holiday Special | A Hollywood Outsider Christmas Dec 08, 2021
    Show notes

Every year, we love to celebrate the holiday season with our listeners, and there is no better way to do that than with our annual Holiday Special!

It all started with a random idea, we were big fans of holiday specials, yet podcasts seemed to skip over the idea completely. Therefore, we decided we can do whatever we want here at The Hollywood Outsider, so let's create our own tradition and the Annual Holiday Special was born!

Every year we do a little something different, so this year we're celebrating by looking back at previous holiday specials and assembling some of the best moments from every host - Aaron, John, Amanda, Brian, Scott, and Justin - for the most fantastic holiday special ever! Debating what constitutes a Christmas movie - including a little Die Hard - and specials we love, building a perfect holiday movie, Christmas cliches we love, and so much more.

That's not all, oh no. The Christmas spirit kicks into overdrive as we open up and share our personal memories of the holiday season, stories that remind us of Christmas. And no holiday special would be complete without a visit from the big man himself, so get ready for as much St. Nick as legally allowed as Santa Claus drops by the studio to tell us just how naughty or nice we are, all throughout the episode!

With a special game from Amanda, Santa in his sleigh, Scott's annual Christmas Poem, and a lot of fun for everyone – This is the one podcast you don't want to miss this holiday season!

Too Much Fan Service, Ghostbusters: Afterlife, Wheel of Time, Tick, Tick...Boom, and Psych 3 Nov 22, 2021
    Show notes

On this episode of The Hollywood Outsider podcast, we discuss the concept of fan service. HBO Max is bringing back Mel and Danny for Lethal Weapon 5, rebooting Under Siege, Ghostbusters: Afterlife basically echoes the plot of the first one, Blade Runner and Aliens are both coming back with new TV series, Spider-Man: No Way Home is bringing back characters from other franchises, and Star Wars has been steeped in serving fans for the past decade. So when is it TOO MUCH fan service, and when do they hit it just right?

Also this week: we return to Movie Manners with our thoughts on kids in theaters, reviews of The Wheel of Time, Tick, Tick... BOOM, and Psych 3: This Is Gus. Then we launch into a lengthy, spoiler-laden discussion on the recent nostalgia explosion that is Ghostbusters: Afterlife.

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's (Philosopher's) Stone: Celebrating 20 Years Nov 15, 2021
    Show notes

Twenty years later and it feels like there couldn't have possibly been a time when Harry Potter didn't exist.

The books, the core films, the spin-offs, the actors, the score, the endless consumerism - there is hardly anything the Potter-verse hasn't touched in some way or another. More than anything, though, the impact on the lives of children and adults alike. The youths who read the books and could fantasize about receiving their own letter; the children who were the same age as the characters and actors and literally grew up together; and the adults and parents who watched their children and their children's children grow up and explore the world of magic.

Regardless if you adore or couldn't care less of the franchise, it's impossible to deny that it is truly remarkable.

On this episode of The Hollywood Outsider podcast, we discuss all things Harry Potter, including the books' translation to film, the impeccable casting for the films, our preferred Dumbledore, how/if J.K. Rowling's recent controversy has impacted our enjoyment, and acknowledgment that it's our (Americans) fault we can't have anything nice.

    Post-Credits Stingers and Marvel's Eternals Nov 10, 2021
    Show notes

On this episode of The Hollywood Outsider podcast, we discuss the concept of movie stingers, those post-credits scenes so many Marvel films love to throw at us these days. A stinger is typically short clip that appears after all or some of the closing credits have rolled and sometimes a movie has seemingly ended. But is this trend getting a bit tired? Or has it become a movie necessity? Also, AfterCredits.com is a great tool for determining which films have stingers attached, per Troy's recommendation in this episode.

Also this week: our news round-up touches on the loss of Dean Stockwell and Disney's IMAX-enhanced Marvel films for Disney+, reviews of The Feast and Clerk, and then a lengthy discussion on Marvel's latest blockbuster, Eternals.

    Show notes

Every holiday season, we discuss those family-filled, festive films and what we like or loathe about them. Not all can be as perfect as Die Hard, after all. And every year, Hollywood doesn't listen. But what if we held the power? The power to make you believe in the magic of Christmas (or a non-denominational winter holiday)? It's time to put up or shut up, because on this episode of The Hollywood Outsider podcast, we are each going to build our own perfect holiday movie! And yes, these stories are copyrighted.

Dune, Cliffhangers in Movies, Rust Tragedy, and Netflix's Dave Chappelle Walkout Oct 25, 2021
    Show notes

On this episode of The Hollywood Outsider podcast, Dune and the concept of cliffhangers in film. Denis Villeneuve's Dune is truly only half of the story as the film builds right up to an understated cliffhanger, therefore the majority of this film is setting up the characters and the story for what's to come. Villeneuve has a plethora of talent to pluck from, as there is not an actor present not bringing their A-game to the occasionally confounding vernacular inherent to this world. Visually stunning, but is it a great film? Take a listen as we dissect the overall film, as well as debate the concept of ending your film on a bonafide cliffhanger.

Also this week: we discuss the recent walkout in response to Dave Chappelle's Netflix special, The Closer, and the absolute tragedy that took place on the set of the independent film, RUST, where a senseless accident claimed the life of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins.
