HBW 019: How to Transform Your Money Mindset with Reverend Jenenne Macklin Feb 03, 2016
    Show notes

Today's conversation with Rosetta brings insight and revelation from Reverend Jenenne Macklin. She is a licensed clinical therapist with a master's degree in social work, now working as the Spirit and Riches coach. During her time in the field, Reverend Jenenne helped countless people change their lives, but found a serious lack of self value in women. The Reverend had every reason to not value herself, either. She journeyed through debt, being fired, and desperately attempting to regain control of her life. Jenenne speaks with authority because she worked her way up from the bottom. She began her life's work of instilling in women that who you are brings the value to every role you are in. Listen in as Jenenne propels you into making peace with your money by changing your mindset.

[Tweet "How to Transform Your Relationship with Money with @JenenneM"]

How you think about yourself impacts how you handle your money.

Reverend Jenenne's mission is, "To empower women to know their value, to impact and transform their relationship with money." She started out with a mixed up relationship with money. Jenenne, not understanding the implications, started accruing credit card debt early on in college. Much to her surprise, the debt and irresponsible choices stayed with her and her credit score. She spent time evading creditors and wondering how to regain control over her finances and her life. Jenenne began to see patterns of thinking and believing but could not seem to change herself or her clients. Untangling self worth from what you do to who you are connected Jenenne's spirituality to her business of coaching. Can you relate? Listen in and let Jenenne's journey motivate you!

    Moving from fear to faith.

Do you think you're the only entrepreneur with debt? Or the only one with habits of spending money on shoes? Do you think no one else is struggling with historical residue or an ingrained idea of how things are "supposed" to be? Jenenne recommends similar action steps that she took to reboot her thinking. Hear how she involved her spirituality in pursuing business ownership. She moved herself away from a victim mentality to confidently controlling her money. Jenenne offers proven prosperity principles to help you make peace with money. She picked up the phone and called her creditors instead of running from them. Even though it was scary, she made a budget. She asked herself, and will ask you, "Do I want a different kind of life? Or these shoes?" Learn how Reverend Jenenne put this plan into action on this episode.

[Tweet "Reframing the stories in your head about money and self-worth, on this episode"]

Strategies to stay in alignment with your values and move forward.

Whether you are a first generation entrepreneur or not, you will be met with resistance as you move forward. Reverend Jenenne rediscovered her value, but not without obstacles to overcome. She examined what voices she was surrounded by and if she needed to leave some circles of people behind. Are you in a conversation of support? Do you only hear discouragement? Jenenne knows first-hand that you cannot survive this journey alone. She advises simple but powerful strategies to keep you in line with the changes you'll need to make. On this episode, Reverend Jenenne walks us through the strategies she implements daily, from waking in the morning until she falls asleep at night. She offers a fancy way of saying, "No" when discouraging voices leak in. Listen in for ways you can implement lasting habits to daily set yourself up for success.

Bringing the missing pieces to your business.

How did Jenenne find that missing piece and connect her spirituality to her business? Rosetta ends this conversation with Jenenne's best advice and an anthem to know yourself and your value. The shift to understanding her own value changed Jenenne's path. She is ready for you to change your path, too. She shares resources, authors, books, websites and endless help for your journey. Jenenne divulges what inspires her and how she stands her ground in continued prosperity. You'll find wisdom and inspiration from Reverend Jenenne's journey on this episode of Happy Black Woman.

HBW 018: How Patrice Grell Yursik Took Afrobella From a Part-Time Passion to a Full-Time Business Feb 02, 2016
    Show notes

On today's show Rosetta chats with Patrice Grell Yursik, founder of Afrobella. She's a passionate entrepreneur and part of the Happy Black Woman tribe. With a flourishing business celebrating its 10th year, Patrice is the perfect person to share tips and inspiration to help you follow your passion and purpose. With a background in creative writing, Patrice spent many years working for large newspapers. While she enjoyed her work, she came face to face with a noticeable void in the media - one shaped like her. Patrice sought positivity in the media and so she decided to pursue her passion and create Afrobella. She's been featured in Essence, Ebony, Glamour, and many other major media outlets. In her chat with Rosetta, Patrice offers great insight into how she turned her passion into a full time job.

[Tweet "How Patrice Grell Yursik Took @Afrobella From a Part-Time Passion to a Full-Time Business"]

The evolution of Afrobella from part-time passion pursuit to full-time career.

Patrice was working full-time in a career she enjoyed. But when she noticed what was truly lacking in the media, Patrice was inspired to take action. With the urging of a close friend, she came up with her brand and (thanks in part to her husband) the name "Afrobella" was born. Patrice's mission: to empower women to love themselves, live their best lives, and embrace their beauty on their own terms. From its whimsical beginnings, Afrobella has truly evolved into a flourishing business and to go-to source for beauty tips. Called by many as the "Godmother of Brown Beauty Blogging" Patrice has become a public figure and has received accolades for her work including being included in the list of Ebony Magazine's Power 100. Since its launch 10 years ago, Afrobella.com has seen over 11 million page views.

Finding your niche and letting it shine.

Although Patrice didn't start out as a beauty expert, her platform and brand have certainly established her as one. She shares how you too can find your niche and let your skills shine. It's all about believing in yourself and going after your passion with everything you've got. Patrice explains how the quote, "Be the change you wish to see in the world." has played a key role in her journey. After starting Afrobella in 2006, Patrice was able to quit her job just 3 years later. As she shares her inspiring journey, she points out that if she can do it, you can too.

A perpetual act of rising to the occasion.

As Patrice takes us through the process of launching her website and eventually becoming a public figure, she shares insight into the steps you can take to turn your passion into a career. Patrice delves into the process of establishing yourself as an expert in your field and how that can translate into much success - in any niche. As she strives to balance a busy business and family life, Patrice uses productivity tools to keep herself focused and makes sure to start her day centered and grounded.

Embrace a spirit of community instead of a spirit of competition.

In her journey as Afrobella, Patrice Grell Yursik certainly faced obstacles, fear, and uncertainty. In spite of - and sometimes because of - those things, she found success in a career that fulfills her and brings her happiness. As Rosetta closes her conversation with Patrice, they discuss the importance of maintaining balance, finding inspiration around you, and following your passion - even when it scares you. Patrice's story is the stuff happy black women are made of. She's found her way to happiness - and you can too. You'll find inspiration and empowerment on this episode of Happy Black Woman.

HBW 016: How to Manifest Love & Romance in 2016, with Shana Campbell Jan 27, 2016
    Show notes

Today's guest on The Happy Black Woman podcast is Shana Campbell, a Certified Creative Love Coach. What is that? You're going to find out on this podcast as Rosetta chats with Shana about how they met, why Shana began a business coaching others on the topic of love, and how she has helped Rosetta with counsel about her own love life. It's a very intriguing episode that you won't want to miss, so be sure to set aside the time, grab a hot drink, and get ready to take some notes.

Why loving relationships begin with self love.

Imagine what a relationship would be like if both people in the relationship were insecure, each one always thinking that the other was criticizing them, or thinking badly about them. Some of you don't have to imagine, it's the relationship you're living in right now. Shana Campbell believes that every healthy relationship starts with a healthy dose of self love in both individuals. Nobody is really ready to love another person until they are confident and whole within themselves, accepting and loving who they are. Find out more on this episode.

Did you know that your love life is something you can consciously work on?

It's true! You don't have to sit around waiting for that right person to come along, you can be consciously working toward it. How? By becoming your very best, learning to accept yourself and be confident in who you are created to be. That way when "Mr. Right" does come along, you'll be ready to engage fully without the fear and insecurity that have held you back for so long. Learn to make the most of the time you're single rather than regretting it.

The world needs you to be yourself.

You were placed on the earth by God to be a blessing in very specific ways that are unique to you. There's nobody else like you and nobody else who can do what you're supposed to do. By becoming healthy and whole within yourself, you'll be able to fulfill that role. Love Coach Shana Campbell says that you'll also be ready to take on the challenge of a romantic relationship once you reach that point of wholeness, which is an added bonus! Find out more about Shana and her love coaching practice, on this episode of Happy Black Woman.

You can't be successful in business when you don't accept yourself.

Your business will be an outgrowth of who you are as a person. It's going to reflect you for everyone to see. What kind of business do you think you're going to build if you are always criticizing and berating yourself? It's vital that you get your inner self healed and whole so that the business you want and the life you desire are possible on the highest of levels. Today's guest, Shana Campbell talks about that a whole lot more, on this episode.

HBW 015: How to Save More Money in 2016 with Tiffany Aliche, the Budgetnista Jan 20, 2016
    Show notes

One of the most challenging areas of life, much less running a business, is the area of finances. There are so many options when it comes to income sources, investment accounts, and business opportunities. If you've had trouble getting your financial house in order, you're in for a treat because today's episode features Tiffany Aliche, the Budgetnista! Rosetta and Tiffany have a great conversation that shares Tiffany's journey but also reveals some very basic but powerful financial steps you can take to make more of your money right now. You won't want to miss this one.

[Tweet "Automation is the new discipline when it comes to getting ahead financially"]

Building a vision for what would become a dream.

The steps from where you are to where you dream you could be are not fast and they are not without pain. Tiffany Aliche's dream to become a financial mentor wasn't even fully formed when she first started helping people with her finances. She was a teacher and would often have conversations with the parents of her students about financial issues. When the non-profit school where she worked laid her off because of budget cuts, Tiffany decided that she should make a business doing the financial training that she loved. On this episode you're going to hear her story of coming up through the ranks and working hard to become the Budgetnista.

When you first get started, finances are slim.

Tiffany Aliche started her business from her laptop, living in her parent's home at the age of 29. Her goal was to get out on her own and see the fruits of her labors in a thriving business. Soon she moved into a house where she paid $500 for a room each month. Over time, she's grown her business to fully support her, to provide for paid, full time staff, and to bring some virtual help onto her team as well. Her speaking fees, which started at $100 are now over $10,000. You'll hear a lot of hard work and patience expressed, but even more, the determination of a happy black woman who would not let her dream die.

[Tweet "Inconvenient money is the money that gets saved. Make it hard to get your cash"]

How you can begin to achieve your financial goals this year.

One of the highlights of this episode is Tiffany's practical approach to saving and investing hard earned cash. In this episode she shares 2 very easy things you can do to maximize your savings now and make it harder for you to tap into that savings for unneeded things. She's also going to show you the power of multiple bank accounts, and the importance of having an online bank account. You'll get so much value out of her financial tips, so make sure you listen.

The #1 tip for Happy Black Women who want to start their own business.

If you've got a dream you want to pursue, a business idea that you want to put into action, there's only one piece of advice the Budgetnista has for you. Get started. You can't wait for everything to be in order before you act, because it never will be in order. You've got to fail fast. Get the mistakes made and learn from them. Then you'll be ready to move past them to greater areas of success in a much shorter time frame. Tiffany's passion comes out loud and clear as she talks about the importance of getting started, so take some time to invest in yourself by listening to this episode.

HBW 014: How to Grow Your Business in 2016 with Melinda Emerson, the Small Biz Lady Jan 13, 2016
    Show notes

Learn from your mistakes. How many times have you heard that tired old phrase? But the truth is that it's a very true phrase that describes why those who succeed in business DO succeed. They make mistakes. Nothing wrong with that. But they learn from them, they grow from them, and they don't make them again. That's the message you'll hear loud and clear from Melinda Emerson, the Small Biz Lady who has made million dollar business hum along on the back of her own mistakes. She's turned those mistakes into lessons that she now uses to help other women entrepreneurs start the business that will give them happiness and freedom. Join Rosetta on this episode as she and Melinda chat about business, life, regrets, and the will to succeed.

Trusting yourself when nobody else will.

If you want to start a business that can create the lifestyle you want, you have to have thick skin at times. Not everyone is going to support you. Sometimes the ones who should be cheering you on the most will be the ones who are the most negative about your dreams. Are you ready for that? Are you able to trust yourself, your ability, and your desire to make yourself succeed to the point that you can keep going when everyone says you're crazy? That's what Melinda Emerson had to do and her persistence has paid off with a million dollar business. Hear her story of pain and triumph, on this episode of Happy Black Woman.

Don't start a business by quitting your job!

Your dream is not enough to justify you quitting your day job. That's one of the messages Melinda Emerson shouts from the rooftops. You've got to take care of yourself and your family while you build that business dream. It's typically going to be a side hustle you do in your spare time while you keep on working at the job you want to leave. It's how you do things wisely, securely, and in a way that enables you to learn your lessons and make your mistakes while you have something secure to fall back on. Hear more of Melinda's practical advice for starting your own business on this episode.

You don't have to be everywhere on social media.

You just have to be in the right places. What ARE the right places? The social media sites that are right for you are the social media sites where your ideal customers hang out. It doesn't matter if it's your favorite or the one you hate. If it's where your ideal customers are, you've got to be there. In this episode, the small biz lady, Melinda Emerson shares how she learned that principle and how it's leveraged her business into a million dollar brand that has become well known and very successful. You'll love her practical approach.

You never lose in business. You either win, or you learn.

That's Melinda Emerson's favorite mantra for her business and that attitude of learning from mistakes has carried her to the heights of success. She's made all kinds of mistakes, which she's outlined in her book, "Becoming Your Own Boss in 12 Months," and it's those mistakes that have given her the expertise and education to turn the corner toward success and help others build their businesses without making the same mistakes. If you take the time to listen to this episode you'll see why Melinda is The Small Biz Lady, so be sure you do it.

HBW 013: How to Create More "Happy Hours" in 2016, with Jullien Gordon Jan 06, 2016
    Show notes

The typical meaning of the phrase "Happy Hour" is the time just after work when everyone goes to a bar or restaurant to blow off some stress after the workday. But Rosetta's guest today, Jullien Gordon, specializes in helping entrepreneurs and business professionals live every hour as a happy hour, especially in the work hours of the day. He believes that the way to be your best and make the most of your work life is to employ strategies that help you see your work and life through new eyes. On this episode you're going to hear Jullien explain what he means by "happy hours" and how he recommends you create them every day. You won't want to miss this!

Jullien's lessons about workaholism and proper boundaries.

Before Jullien Gordon was married, he worked long hours every day. It was part of his regular routine and he loved it. But after he married, his wife helped him see that what he'd really done was build habits of workaholism that no longer served him well in his new life. When a baby was added to the mix he realized quickly that things had to change. Jullien's added boundaries to his work day now, even though he's an entrepreneur. He makes room for his family and fosters those relational moments that are so necessary for a healthy relationship. On this episode of Happy Black Woman, Jullien shares two daily practices that keep his marriage tight and his priorities balanced, so be sure you listen.

Why you need boundaries for your work.

Very few occupations or niches require a true "emergency" response (Doctors, nurses, etc.). You can and you should set boundaries to limit your focus on work activities. Not only will it provide you time to decompress and get the rest your body and soul need, it will also enable you to spend much needed time on hobbies or relationships that could be lacking. On this episode you're going to hear how Jullien Gordon found that balance for himself and how he advises clients to do the same thing in their busy lives

Get help for your business before you think you need it.

Yes, adding more to the payroll is an additional expense. But if you do a proper search and find the right person, they will add money to your income rather than take money from your profits. In this episode Jullien Gordon shares how he reached out to his existing community to find just the right person to add to his team as a Virtual Assistant. It was a creative way that brought him very qualified applicants and enabled him to be freed up to create even more value and revenue for his company. You'll want to hear this one.

How you can increase revenue without adding one customer.

You might think it's done through raising your prices, but you'd be wrong. On this episode of the Happy Black Woman Podcast, Jullien Gordon shares how he increased his revenue significantly without adding one client to his portfolio. It was a simple service that he was able to add to what he was already doing that gave tremendous additional value to his existing clients and increased his bottom line. It's an ingenious idea that you'll only hear on this episode of the podcast.

Jullien Gordon has a passion for creating tools and experiences for self-discovery. When he is not speaking, coaching, or writing, he's all about helping people experience MORE HAPPY HOURS in their lives. This is how he measures success.

As Founder of The Focused Group, Jullien is bringing mastermind groups to the masses through his monthly group goal-setting and accountability meetings. After battling with workaholism during the early stages of his first company, he began exploring and experimenting with new ways to work. As a former soccer player and coach, he believes that life is a team sport, but most people are ambitious and alone. Jullien has come to recognize that community and accountability are the holy grail to success, not effort, and when you surround yourself with a strong team, you can have success without the stress, sacrifice, and solitude.

On a more personal note, he loves taking walks with his wife, swimming with his daughter, and hosting potlucks with his family and friends. He has been keeping a daily gratitude journal for the past 5 years that documents more moments like these and he is proud of the life he has already created and continues to create.

HBW 011: Jesse Krieger on How to Build a Business and Brand Around a Book Dec 07, 2015
    Show notes

Today's guest, Jesse Krieger is an amazing example of the kind of life you can live if you strategically take action to make it happen. His publishing company, Lifestyle Entrepreneur Press is based around his personal success as a best-selling author, with his book hitting #1 in the Personal Success category on Amazon. He's leveraged his success to help other entrepreneurs who desire to build a brand or business around a book get that book published and ranking high on the best-seller charts as well. In this conversation with Rosetta Thurman, Jesse shares some of his story and practical tips about heading into a life that allows you the freedom and income to pursue your dreams. You won't want to miss this!

[Tweet "You can leverage a book to build your entire business. Find out how on this episode"]

You can build a brand and a business around a book, and Jesse Krieger is the man to show you how!

Even if you wrote a best-selling book that would likely not be the means by which you'd gain a ton of income. But the content of the book does a number of things for you. #1 - it enables you to have a "business card" that is a book, a way for you to demonstrate your expertise in a tangible publication that people naturally respect. #2 - it lays the groundwork for you to build additional content off the topics you cover in the book, anything from online courses and video sets, to live events and speaking engagements. There's no limit to the ways you can leverage a book, if you know how to do it the right way. Today's guest, Jesse Krieger, is the man to help you do it, so be sure you listen to this episode of the Happy Black Woman!

Start rough and improve as you go.

Jesse Krieger may be a best-selling author and a publisher, but his success didn't happen on the first take. In this conversation he tells how he created a small, partly finished book, then modified it by adding more content, then continued to tweak and update it as he went along. That enabled him to get something finished and continue to build. Alongside his improvements, his business was growing at the same time. It's a philosophy he subscribes to and suggests that you follow. Don't wait for your "thing" to be perfect before you release it. Get it out there and make improvements as you go. That's how you learn what your market wants and needs and it's how you get yourself rolling toward creating the great things you have in mind. Learn Jesse's thoughts on this important issue by listening to this episode.

Have you heard of the "big rocks' philosophy of goal setting?

Jesse Krieger refers to an illustration his mentor taught him that uses a jar, large rocks, small rocks, sand, and water. It's a great way to conceptualize how you should go about prioritizing things in your life and business. The original illustration was taught by Stephen Covey and it continues to be a guiding principle for many entrepreneurs and business people today. You can see the illustration in this video, or even better, listen to this episode of the Happy Black Woman Podcast to hear how today's guest, Jesse Krieger, uses the concept to move his publishing empire forward month by month.

You want freedom? Then you'll have to develop structure in your life.

That may sound a bit counterintuitive, but it's actually very logical. Freedom is like any other goal, you have to put things in place that will enable it to happen. You can't just live a free flowing life and expect your desired freedom to come about. Jesse Krieger, today's guest, suggests that you need to put the systems and tools in place that enable you to manage the demands of life in a way that affords you the freedom of lifestyle and time that you want. If you don't, you'll be at the beck and call of whatever comes your way. Find out how Jesse does it on this episode.

Jesse's a take-action kind of guy and this list is designed with that same mentality and approach. You can get a copy of this great author resource by listening to this episode!

HBW 010: Crystal Porter on Hair Health and the Power of Serving a Unique Niche Nov 30, 2015
    Show notes

Today's guest is Crystal Porter, Ph.D. She is the founder of Mane Insights, a company that gives tailored hair care advice, from a scientific perspective, to women with hair problems. Dr. Porter spent the majority of her 14-year career at L'Oreal, USA where she managed the Physics Laboratory and Consumer Insights teams to study the biophysical characteristics of hair and pigmented skin within different ethnic groups around the world and to understand behaviors that are related to consumers' experiences. During the past eleven years, she has shared knowledge about ethnic hair to fellow scientists and the public at national and international venues. She has also contributed to L'Oreal's global classification of curl in hair and has authored numerous papers, presentations and book chapters on hair straightening and ethnic hair. Her conversation with Rosetta today is full of insights!

[Tweet "What I'm doing now, I feel good about having my daughters watching." - Dr. Crystal Porter"]

The road to becoming an entrepreneur was motivated by asking the deeper questions.

Dr. Crystal Porter was working full time in a very intense role for a large company. Even though she often told her superiors that she couldn't continue to put in the hours that she was being required to give, they didn't seem to understand or even care. Her life continued to be a stressful and her time with family was getting more and more scarce. She had to ask herself the deeper questions about what she wanted from life and what was important to her. That time of questioning is what led her to move into her own business as a way to continue the income she'd become accustomed to but also allow her the time to be with family and do the things that were important to her. Sound familiar? Dr. Porter's story could be a great encouragement to you, be sure to listen!

A great example of niching-down to find a great opportunity.

[Tweet "Finding a niche and serving it with great profit, on the Happy Black Woman Podcast"]

It may not seem very probable that a company could be built purely on the need that Black Women have to have expert advice about how to deal with problems related to their hair. But Dr. Crystal Porter has discovered that not only does a relatively smaller niche such as that provide her ample opportunities for a great income, it also enables her to help many, many people with a very serious area of need. It's an example of how there are many areas of need that nobody is servicing and how you can focus more narrowly to make even more income and meet more needs. Learn how Dr. Porter came to discover this great area of need on this episode.

Asking questions as a way of serving her audience.

Dr. Crystal Porter explains on this episode how she goes about helping a wide variety of clients who have very different needs, and it's through the asking of good questions. She's able to hone in on the specific needs an individual may have by asking the right questions. Her example is a lesson for any entrepreneur. You may have an idea of what your audience needs or wants but until you actually hear from them, you won't really know. How can you ask better questions of your audience to discover the exact needs they have? Listen to this episode to hear how Dr. Porter does it and how you can take a similar approach in your business.

Working consistently within your values is powerfully important for the longevity of your business.

In her journey to becoming an entrepreneur, Dr. Crystal Porter was motivated by the disharmony she saw between the type of hours and drive she was required to put in at her place of employment and the inner beliefs she had about the priority her family should have in her life. She didn't like that the sacrifices she was having to make in order to maintain her employment were at conflict with the needs she saw in her family. That's why she made the switch to entrepreneurship. What are your values about life and work? What are you willing to do and what are you not willing to do? How can you leverage your beliefs about family and work to motivate you to build the business you want and need? You'll find great encouragement from Dr. Crystal's story on this episode of Happy Black Woman.
