    The Happy Birthway Podcast

New: Hear your voice on The Happy Birthway Podcast! Call 203-759-8639 to ask me a question or leave a comment that I will answer on the podcast.

Unpopular opinion: A healthy mom and healthy baby are NOT enough. Why don’t we pay attention to a mother’s experience and perceptions of her birth enough?

I’m an L&D nurse revealing insider secrets that you won’t learn in your standard childbirth ed class. We explore every facet (from opposite extremes) of not just birth, but the experience of womanhood and childbearing. Along with women sharing their experiences vulnerably, a slew of experts gift us with knowledge we never thought we needed. I throw in an extra layer to the discussion by exploring the implications of Judaism and Jewish culture on the reproductive experience. This show spans way beyond pregnancy and birth, with topics on sex, birth control, birth trauma, perinatal mental health, postpartum realities, breastfeeding, sleep training, diet culture, infertility, realities of our healthcare system, Jewish law, and so much more.

The information here is not intended to give you medical advice or replace the care of a qualified healthcare provider.

    27. Exclusive Pumping - What a Wild Ride: Part 1 w/ Tamari Jacobs of @onewiththepump Nov 27, 2021
    Show notes

Exclusive pumping was not the way that Tamari envisioned feeding her baby. After many frustrating weeks of struggling to breastfeed her first baby, she had no choice but to resort to it if she wanted to provide him with breastmilk. She was lost and struggled immensely, having no idea what a wild ride it would be. She took that experience to self actualize by becoming a lactation counselor that specializes in teaching and supporting moms through pumping - whether exclusive or not. You can reach her on Instagram @onewiththepump as well as her website, where she offers various relevant courses and 1:1 support.

    26. Our Healthcare System is Broken - How I had to advocate for my daughter Nov 20, 2021
    Show notes

Last week, we were "on the other side of the bed" so to speak. I had an encounter in the hospital with my daughter's medical care that left me frustrated and angry. It led me to put the self-advocacy skills that I teach to so many into practice for myself. Were my strong reactions a result of my experience working in a hospital or because I was like any parent who wanted the safest and best medical care for their child? I delve into that in this episode, where you'll hear my story.

    24. Shifting Perspectives on the "Right" Way to Birth Nov 08, 2021
    Show notes

Simcha's birth unfolded in a way that challenged many of her beliefs about birth. She used this perspective shift as a source of growth and an opportunity for connection with G-d. Despite lots of curveballs thrown her way, Simcha emerged from her birth with feelings of empowerment and being cared for. Postpartum, however, triggered some dormant anxiety, which propelled her to let go of shame and seek professional support. She bares her story with humility and bravery, creating purpose from her struggles. You can find her chronicling her life on Instagram: @gentle_jew.
