The Gestalt Gardener — Games & Hobbies
The Gestalt Gardener

Each week, horticulturalist Felder Rushing shares stories, answers questions and just talks gardening. Of course, you’ll hear a bit of “cheesy music” in every program and you might hear a bad joke or two as well. The Gestalt Gardener is a long-time favorite on MPB Think Radio, due in no small part to Felder’s laid-back, your-neighbors-might-talk-but-so-what approach to gardening.

Email Felder anytime at garden@mpbonline.org and listen Friday mornings at 9 and Saturday mornings at 10 to The Gestalt Gardener on MPB Think Radio. And in the meantime, as Felder says, get out and get dirty.

The Gestalt Gardener | After The Turkey Dec 06, 2019

Show notes

With this being the first episode of the Gestalt Gardener since the Thanksgiving holiday, Felder is in a rather rambunctious mood and ready to talk some gardening. Another reason for his jovial nature might be the annual Chimneyville Arts Festival ,happening this weekend, that sell some of his favorite items including thunder gourds and miniature bottle trees. With a right on time cheesy tune and stories from the Thanksgiving table the best garden party on radio is back in business. Let's get dirty!

The Gestalt Gardener | Oklahoma Nov 08, 2019

Show notes

Felder Rushing is not in the studio today because he had to "woop it up" with the master gardeners of Oklahoma. But right before he hits the stage he makes time for the weekly garden party right here on MPB Think Radio. With the temps getting really low he lets you know it is the perfect time to get your plants that love the cold in the ground and pull up some of your summer annuals. After taking some southern garden questions Felder plays a cheesy tune by one of his favorite singers. Let's get dirty!

The Gestalt Gardener | Seeing Double Nov 01, 2019

Show notes

Halloween is now a thing of the past and winter is now here. Has anybody seen fall? I think we missed it. But even with the cold temps Felder spent All Hallows Eve in his garden putting some winter ready plants in the ground and meeting is doppelganger (see cover picture). The time is still right to plant for the winter even if you want to place your plants in a container. During this edition of MPB's garden party Felder hands out more winter garden advice and plays a tune that celebrates another day above the ground. Let's get dirty!

The Gestalt Gardener | Spider Lily or Naked Lady Oct 25, 2019

Show notes

Felder Rushing starts this weeks garden party with a great conversation with his friend and premiere bulb expert, Brent Heath. Like true friends they catch up and exchange pleasantries before the hard questions are asked. Spider lilies or naked ladies? Also in between southern gardening questions about muscadines, ornamental cabbage, and crape myrtles Felder plays a very timely ear-worm of a cheesy tune. Let's get dirty!

The Gestalt Gardener: After The Rain Oct 18, 2019

Show notes

Felder is in a chipper mood even after getting so much (much needed) rain in his garden. And with the wet ground its a great time to place out your plants that love the cold weather. After opening the show with a few calls to Felder chats with Don VanDerwerken from JD Farms and the Sweet Mississippi Tea Festival. And according to Don they owe Felder for their start in tea production. Then when the interview is done it's nonstop southern garden talk with an ear-worm of a cheesy tune. Let's get dirty!

The Gestalt Gardener: Fall Cultivation Oct 11, 2019

Show notes

Last episode Felder talked about spray painting plants in his garden green that were brown. Why? Because it made him happy! There are really just a few rules to maintaining a garden and at the top of that list is: Enjoy Yourself! During today's garden party (and every garden party) Felder trumpets this message while answering your southern gardening questions. Also he chats with Dr. Gary Bachman and brings a cheesy tune from one of his favorite singers. Let's get dirty!

The Gestalt Gardener: Golden Garden Oct 04, 2019

Show notes

Felder Rushing is not hard to spot, especially in his big green garden truck. But you won't see him driving before a show. He usually walks from his cottage and picks up some flowers along the way. (If nobody's looking!) On today's show Felder talks about the flower show at the Mississippi State Fair and his upcoming presentations around the south. Also he pays tribute to a true Mississippi legend, Jim Henson. And it is not a true garden party without your southern garden questions. Let's get dirty!

The Gestalt Gardener: Green Thumb Trucking Sep 27, 2019

Show notes

Felder and his mobile garden can be found all around Mississippi and beyond. And for the past two weeks he brought the miniature version of his truck into the studio to track some new growth. Felder may say that he does not like the tend to his home garden but his little truck (and the big one) keep his thumb green throughout the year. During today's garden party Felder answers questions about cutting back, spider lilies, and also reminds us why he is just a country boy. Let's get dirty!

The Gestalt Gardener: September Water Sep 20, 2019

Show notes

Felder often takes a long trip during the summer and this takes a toll on his garden. Some years are better than others but there were a few surprises this year. Felder has just done something in his garden that he does not often do, but as always this garden party is the best on radio. Felder brings in some fragrant flowers, answers your southern garden questions, and plays a cheesy tune (suggested by a listener). Let's get dirty!
