Dr. Rose Hayden-Smith is an author, historian, and food systems expert. She has a passion for the American Gardening Programs of WW 1. She is often called the Victory Grower.
    1.What is a victory garden?
2.You are a food systems expert, what is that and how does that apply to even just someone growing some tomatoes on their apartment patio?
3.Your book Sowing the Seeds of Victory: American Gardening Programs of WW1 – what inspired you to write this book?
4.There can be many parellels drawn from WW 1 times to today – there was a pandemic, etc, what are some other parellels – (people showing interest in growing their own food)?
5.Why should we look at history when it comes to things like growing food, changing food systems, even pandemics?
6.How can people find out more about you?
In segment four Joey and Holly answer gardeners questions
Q One of my container cherry tomatoes all of a sudden has green aphids and ants. I was reading that the duo are quite a pair. Sounds like the ants are gardening the aphids? How can I prevent both from hanging out on my tomatoes. I already removed the aphids and put down coffee grounds and cayenne pepper (I didn’t have any ground cinnamon).
Recently the ants ate the root system from my Bee Balm and now I’m worried they’re doing the same to my Black Cherries because the plant hasn’t been growing much
A:top dress with worm castings water around plants for aphids - get rid of aphids the ants go with them
Get rid of aphids and other sap-sucking pests. This will prevent ants from hanging around to harvest honeydew.
Distribute artificial sweetener near the ants. Reportedly, this is fatal to ants (which might make you reconsider adding the stuff to your coffee).
Sprinkle ground cinnamon or cayenne pepper around your plants. This may help repel, but not injure, ants.
Place food-grade diatomaceous earth by trails and nests. Made from fossilized hard-shelled algae called diatoms, this fine powder dehydrates ants — as well as slugs and cockroaches. But it’s completely safe for humans. (Note: It may take a few weeks to kill ants, and it must stay dry to be effective.)
Set a borax (or boric acid) and sugar poison trap. A quick internet search will return dozens of DIY recipes for borax- and boric acid-based pest poisons. But use these carefully — though borax and boric acid are natural compounds, they are toxic to humans and animals.
Pour boiling water on the anthill. This technique works only if you know where the ants’ nest is, of course. And bear in mind, ants build their homes to withstand rain and flooding. So it may take several attempts before you kill the queen (and wipe out the colony).
Q: Are pine needles are too acidic to use as browns for composting?
I am so glad I came across your site. It has a lot of valuable information. Keep up the good work.
    Thank you,
A: Thank you for the kind words of out the site. Pine needles are acidic on the tree however you can mix them into your compost pile but it is best to not mix more than 10% of the total volume of the pile with pine needles as it can cause problems in breaking down in a reasonable amount of time period
Q: is it okay that my swiss chard is so floppy? they grew so tall and then get knocked down by just normal watering. They're all on the dirt instead of growing upwards. Crushed by their own weight and the weight of water. Its been a few days but the leaves still look green so it doesn't look like its dying. I'm hoping they recover and start growing upwards or start looking like leafy plants eventually. I'm worried I might have killed them.
A: yes it will still grow even though it is floppy you can harvest off of it all though the season you do not have to wait till it gets large. By harvesting the outer leaves the largest ones will help the other grow.
Q: Are the leaves of Sunchokes edible?? Thanks.
A: The Leaves are not safe for humans
Q:Any tips on slowing the production of flowers on basil?
    A. Basil that is going to flower can be caused but hot temperatures indoor and out, pick the flowers off as soon as you see them. Basil won't live forever but cutting the flowers off and keeping the plant cool in good soil can make it last a bit longer. Instead of harvesting individual leaves, you can also harvest stems or the entire plant. Basil will grow back and provide a second or even third harvest even after being completely stripped of leaves.
Q:What variety of eggplant do you suggest for northern Wisconsin?
A: A little finger eggplant or a White egg eggplant are both good ones to grow as they take only 65 days to produce

In segment four Joey and Holly answer gardeners questions
Q Last year i had pears that had brown scab like areas on them what might that be and how or what do i do to fix it
A: Apple Scab and Pear Scab
Apple scab Venturia inaequalis, and the closely-related pear scab Venturia pyrina, are major fungal diseases affecting tree fruit crops.
Scab is spread by airborne spores causing dark green, velvety spots on leaves and dark, scabby blotches and cracks on the fruit. The lesions affect the appearance of the fruit and seriously reduce the crop’s commercial value. In addition, the cracks leave the fruit prone to rotting which affects the storage capability. On young shoots the cracking can also provide entry points for canker.
Control is via fungicides such as Captan-based products which may need to be applied as often as 15 times each season.
How to Treat Pear Scab Naturally Controlling pear scab without chemicals takes some vigilance. Since the inoculum lives in the diseased plant material, cleaning up dropped leaves in fall can help prevent the spread. Removing infected plant materials can also have some benefit. The fruit is often widely infected in storage. Be very careful during harvest to sequester any fruit that exhibits even the tiniest lesion. If even one gets into a storage crate, the rest of the harvest could get infected. Sanitation and good hygienic practices are the only offerings for pear scab control without spraying. Controlling Pear Scab with Sprays Fungicide sprays need to be applied 2 to 5 times during the season, depending upon where the tree is growing. The most important spray is done just as the flowers become pink. This is usually followed every 10 to 14 days by successive spraying to eradicate all the spores. Lime sulfur sprays applied at the delayed dormant season (usually around February to the middle of March) can help prevent spores from activating. A combination of chemical and natural methods is the best method of controlling pear scab in regions with warm, wet weather during flowering and fruiting.
Just peel and eat unless the infection gets so bad that the fruit cracks or becomes misshapen and secondary rot organisms destroy it.
    Q. Why are my zucchini flowers not opening ?
A: i t can be a sign of stress. Sometimes it happens when you have a squash vine borer, the plants can be too close together. ... They are huge plants and need space. If they are closed still, they are not yet mature
Q what do you do with the soil afterwards you harvest your crops in your grow bag
A: What we do is fill the bag half full with the soil that was used to grow that drop and then top the bag off with new compost
Q Can i freeze seeds to keep them longer?
A:Freezing seeds does not harm them, and can greatly extend their lifespan if done properly. All seed banks freeze their seeds intended for long term storage! Humidity is a greater concern with freezing, as a blast of warm humid air on frozen seeds can damage them
Q: Just bought a house; Rush City, MN. I am working with gardens and adjusting certain plants. There is an amazing mess of Asparagus!!! However it's insanely over grown and in a location that it needs to be moved. I understand a pitch fork is needed but does it need to wait til fall? And not sure where I can move it to, partially shaded?
A: Asparagus like full sun best partial shade 6 hour or so of sun it will do fine yes wait till fall after is has died back

    6. How can we find out more about you?

In segment four Joey and Holly answer gardeners questions
Q Is there an organic method to keep cabbage worms off my kale and cabbage other than plucking them off every day? .
    A: Apply Diatomaceous Earth
Get some food-grade diatomaceous earth and sprinkle it on plants where cabbage worms are
spotted. The diatomaceous earth powder will kill cabbage worms by piercing their bodies.
    Set up a Netting Barrier
Cabbage moths and butterflies may lay eggs a couple of times during the year. During these times, you should set up row barriers or netting barriers across your garden to prevent the adults from laying their eggs. No eggs, no cabbage worm problems.
    Dust Leaves with Cornmeal
You could kill the cabbage worms by dusting the affected plants with cornmeal. The caterpillars with eat the cornmeal, swell up, and eventually die. Original all-purpose flour may also work.
    Apply Companion Planting
Grow pest-repelling plants (e.g. thyme, mint) next to your susceptible plants. This could discourage the adult butterflies and moths from laying eggs on your valuable garden crop.
    Make a Natural Repellent Spray
There are a number of natural ingredients, such as garlic and cayenne pepper, that may deter cabbage worms. Blend these ingredients with water to create the repellent then use a spray to apply it on the undersides of leaves.
    Introduce Beneficial Insects
A sustainable approach to getting rid of cabbage worms is by introducing natural predators to the garden. This may include spiders, praying mantis, and ground beetles. In addition to these insects, you may also want to attract other natural predators such as birds and geckos.
Q: my cucumber plants do not look healthy. The leaves have yellow spots on them. I am not noticing any pest on the plant. Again, anything I should be looking for as a cause/cure?
A: You plants have a fungal and bacterial this can happen but in your pictures I do not see yellow or shrivel on the leaves that would be a fungal infection
On your cucumbers you have Anthracnose this is a fungus that is most prevalent in wet and warm conditions. It can overwinter in fallen vines, leaves, and other plant debris, releasing spores in the spring to infect new plants. The spores (conidia) need moisture and mild temperatures to germinate.
the first thing you can do is remove up to 25% of the leaves on the plant just remove the infected leaves and throw them in the trash this will mostly be the lower leaves on the plant
Chlorothalonil (Bravo) and benomyl (Benlate) are popular fungicides used to treat anthracnose these are the active ingredients benomyl is a possible carcinogen. Chlorothalonil is a broad-spectrum agricultural fungicide that is often applied to crops in bloom when honeybees are present for pollination because it is currently deemed safe to bees
If a large part of your plant is infected, you may need to remove the entire plant and start over with sanitized soil in a different part of the garden I would trime the affected leaves off the plant
Q: I have hole being eaten in my bok choy what is doing this and how to I stop it
A: That is caused by the Flea Beetle. No, they aren’t really fleas, and they only bite plants, not people. Try this homemade spray to control flea beetles: 2 cups rubbing alcohol, 5 cups water, and 1 tablespoon liquid soap. Test out the mixture on a leaf of the plant, let it sit overnight, then spray the rest of the plant if you don’t notice any adverse effects. Spray the mixture on the foliage of garden plants that are susceptible to these pests.
Dusting your plants with plain talcum powder repels flea beetles on tomatoes, potatoes, peppers, and other plants.
Use white sticky traps to capture flea beetles as they jump.
Insecticides may be used early in the season, but are generally unnecessary in the control of flea beetles on adult plants. Be extra diligent if your soil has history of bacterial diseases. Please contact your local nursery or cooperative extension for further advice.
