Pepper plant - spray plant off, put in 5 gallon bucket of soil, place in a cool, semi-dark place like a basement or attached garage, but with some light. Water plant every 3 to 4 weeks. Remove any fruit. Leaves will die back. Once leaves die back you can prune the plant, just trim back so there are a bunch of Y-shaped branches, 3 inches or so in length. To finish your pepper winter care, about a month before your last frost date, bring your pepper plant out of the cool location and move it to a brighter, warmer location. You may even want to use a heating pad under the pot to add additional heat. Resume watering, but
    Broccoli
Broccoli can be planted as early as six weeks before the first frost-free date, but it does best as a fall garden crop. Young plants should be hardened off before transplanting into your garden. Broccoli can tolerate temperatures from 26 to 31 degrees.
Brussels sprouts do so well in the cold that they are often harvested well into winter. This is one vegetable that improves in flavor when exposed to cold temperatures. Frosts will actually increase the sugar content, effectively eliminating the bitter taste so often experienced in summer sprouts.
Cabbage likes cool temperatures as low as 26 degrees depending on the variety. In fact, you will find they do best in cool fall weather and are rather disappointing in a summer garden. However, if you start them early enough, you can still get a crop before the weather gets too hot. A light frost is thought to improve the sweetness of cabbages. Watch for insects such as cabbage lopers who also like to munch on sweet cabbage plants.
Kale can withstand temperatures as low as 10 degrees and is also noted for improved sweetness after frost. A very hardy vegetable, kale not only tolerates the cold, but it hasStore carrots in the ground during cool winter months unless a freeze is expected; if frost is predicted and the roots can’t be protected, dig them up and store them elsewhere. If carrots stay in the ground all winter, harvest them before new top growth starts in spring. Roots stored in the ground through winter should be eaten very soon after harvest; they will not keep well.
Store carrots in the ground where the soil freezes if the ground can be insulated from freezing cold. Keep the soil at 35° to 40°F by putting a 10- to a 12-inch-thick layer of hay, leaves, or straw mulch over the rows; extend the mulch on both sides of each row by another 18 inches or more. This should protect roots even beneath two feet of snow. Dig roots through the winter as needed. no problems with insects like cabbage can have.

    1. Saving seeds is an important practice for the home gardener - why do you save seeds and encourage others to do so?
    2. Your latest book - Saving Our Seeds - what is it about - what inspired it - what is something notable our listeners may be interested in?
    3. You are an herbalist - what is an herbalist and why is this significant?
    4. People hear sustainable living and have misconceptions about it - what does it mean to you? Can people practice it on any level no matter where they live?
    5. Where did the idea for Small House Farm come from? Have you always lived a homestead life? Has your spouse? Like Joey and I, was this a team idea?
    6. How can our listeners find out more about you?
In segment four Joey and Holly answer garden questions
Q I have lots of tulips and daffodils and other spring sprouting plants in my grass if I was to go over my grass with a weed killer would that kill my tulips and daffodils that are underground
A:It may not kill the bulbs directly however the if you use a round up like weed killer then they chemical does stay in the soil and will be picked up by the bulbs and either will kill them or cause them to be deformed and vinegar weed killer will kill the grass and not hurt the soil you may have to apply it several times
Brandon writes in referring to our show topic a in E22 lessons we have learned. Very humble of you guys to share lesson learned even at your expert level
    NO answer need
Q How long are unused canning lids the flat part good for ?
AGaskets in unused lids work well for at least 5 years from date of manufacture. The gasket compound in older unused lids may fail to seal on jars. Buy only the quantity of lids you will use in a year." My opinion, the A year date is a good number to go by.
Will that stump of the brussels sprout plant grow to another stalk or do you have to plant a new one.
A it may grow some but it would focus all its energy in seeds the second year.
Q what do you do about flee beetle and cucumber beetle
A:Flea beetles are most active in spring when adults emerge and their feeding can severely damage seedling plants. ... Neem oil and some horticultural oils are also effective at repelling flea beetles.
Q Is it safe to reprocess in the hot water bath the jars the day after. My lids didn't seal?.

.Q I have 4 cabbage plants of which 1 has a head started. They are covered with the white cloth. I heard they should have flowers in order to form a head. I have never heard of cabbage having flowers. Any ideas why the other 3 have not started forming heads. Should I uncover the cabbage.
    Henry
A: Hello Henry Thank you for the question, I have never heard of a cabbage needing to flower before it heads either, That information is not correct. You do not need to uncover the cabbages. There are many factors to why one of the four has started forming a head and the others have not, It could be as simple as they are just slow growers. If one has started the others will follow soon. If none of them had starts then I would say there was a problem of some sort which could be the following There are a few cultural and temperature elements that may be the reason for cabbage not growing a head. Excess nitrogen may cause the plant to form more leaves that are loosely held and do not make a head. ... Club rot in soggy alkaline soils is another reason why cabbage won't form a head

In segment four Joey and Holly answer gardeners questions
Q One of my container cherry tomatoes all of a sudden has green aphids and ants. I was reading that the duo are quite a pair. Sounds like the ants are gardening the aphids? How can I prevent both from hanging out on my tomatoes. I already removed the aphids and put down coffee grounds and cayenne pepper (I didn’t have any ground cinnamon).
Recently the ants ate the root system from my Bee Balm and now I’m worried they’re doing the same to my Black Cherries because the plant hasn’t been growing much
A:top dress with worm castings water around plants for aphids - get rid of aphids the ants go with them
Get rid of aphids and other sap-sucking pests. This will prevent ants from hanging around to harvest honeydew.
Distribute artificial sweetener near the ants. Reportedly, this is fatal to ants (which might make you reconsider adding the stuff to your coffee).
Sprinkle ground cinnamon or cayenne pepper around your plants. This may help repel, but not injure, ants.
Place food-grade diatomaceous earth by trails and nests. Made from fossilized hard-shelled algae called diatoms, this fine powder dehydrates ants — as well as slugs and cockroaches. But it’s completely safe for humans. (Note: It may take a few weeks to kill ants, and it must stay dry to be effective.)
Set a borax (or boric acid) and sugar poison trap. A quick internet search will return dozens of DIY recipes for borax- and boric acid-based pest poisons. But use these carefully — though borax and boric acid are natural compounds, they are toxic to humans and animals.
Pour boiling water on the anthill. This technique works only if you know where the ants’ nest is, of course. And bear in mind, ants build their homes to withstand rain and flooding. So it may take several attempts before you kill the queen (and wipe out the colony).
Q: Are pine needles are too acidic to use as browns for composting?
I am so glad I came across your site. It has a lot of valuable information. Keep up the good work.
    Thank you,
A: Thank you for the kind words of out the site. Pine needles are acidic on the tree however you can mix them into your compost pile but it is best to not mix more than 10% of the total volume of the pile with pine needles as it can cause problems in breaking down in a reasonable amount of time period
Q: is it okay that my swiss chard is so floppy? they grew so tall and then get knocked down by just normal watering. They're all on the dirt instead of growing upwards. Crushed by their own weight and the weight of water. Its been a few days but the leaves still look green so it doesn't look like its dying. I'm hoping they recover and start growing upwards or start looking like leafy plants eventually. I'm worried I might have killed them.
A: yes it will still grow even though it is floppy you can harvest off of it all though the season you do not have to wait till it gets large. By harvesting the outer leaves the largest ones will help the other grow.
Q: Are the leaves of Sunchokes edible?? Thanks.
A: The Leaves are not safe for humans
Q:Any tips on slowing the production of flowers on basil?
    A. Basil that is going to flower can be caused but hot temperatures indoor and out, pick the flowers off as soon as you see them. Basil won't live forever but cutting the flowers off and keeping the plant cool in good soil can make it last a bit longer. Instead of harvesting individual leaves, you can also harvest stems or the entire plant. Basil will grow back and provide a second or even third harvest even after being completely stripped of leaves.
Q:What variety of eggplant do you suggest for northern Wisconsin?
A: A little finger eggplant or a White egg eggplant are both good ones to grow as they take only 65 days to produce

.Q I have 4 cabbage plants of which 1 has a head started.
