Devastating earthquake or storm in a teacup? Many of us have used and loved DPReview.com over the years and soon it will be shut down. As you might expect from TFOP, our conversation starts here by asking "what does it all mean?" and then ranges far and wide 😂.

But what happens to the enormously valuable resource that dpreview.com has created over the last 25 years? It is reported that the Internet Archive will host a backup to keep it available for us all. Here's hoping!

Lee Unkirch (of Pixar fame) is an avid generator on Twitter. Karen X. Cheng made the Cosmopolitan A.I. cover and has a few things to say about working with DALL-E 2. The dallery.gallery prompt book is going to be a great help for future generative artists working with A.I.

A couple of interesting things happened this week. We had a great conversation in our Discord about the International Landscape Photographer of the Year 2021 - plenty of differing views. A lot of the discussion focused on the extreme post processing in winning images. Some were strongly against it, others less concerned.

Chris presents three new devleopments from computational photography and videography. Relighting (portraits) will keep the light, shadows, color and even specular highlights realistic when swapping out a background. Good old StyleGAN2, the neural net that, among other things, creates artificial humans has received an upgrade with several improvements. If you're a film maker, how about making your virtual car chases much more realistic by transferring the style of lush green German mountains to the dry hills of California.

LDR, SDR, HDR. Today we start a two-part episode on high dynamic range. First, we need to make sure we all understand what the heck we are discussing! So here is a primer, a bit technical, hopefully useful.

LDR: That horribleness you see in photos where the whole image is close to a single brightness or luminosity level. SDR: What your TV displays - unless you have a modern, probably expensive one. HDR: High Dynamic Range! But what does it actually mean?

Chris and Jeremiah talk about their photographic influences. Irving Penn was a master at both fashion color, black and white global portraiture, and exploring the mundane as astonishing using platinum palladium processes. His grasp at the technical and his outstanding approach to color created a dynamic path to follow. Emulating much of his processes led me to find my own way. Edward Weston was a master of portraiture both formal and extemporaneous. His images of field workers contrast with his pictures of the some of the most amazing artists of his time. He created timeless work in landscape and his prints are nothing short of outstanding. Jim Rakete is a German photographer who became a music manager (Nina Hagen, Nena), influenced an entire generation with his LP covers and returned to full-time photography again and works from Berlin and Hollywood.

Sony's 3-layer sensor incorporates not just the light-sensitive pixels, but also some DRAM and logic, sandwiched on top of each other. This enables Sony to achieve high frame rates without the dreaded rolling shutter effect. | Scientists at the university of Utah have developed a lens that is 1000x thinner than regular optics. We speculate about how this could change photography in the future. And it's not all positive. | Out of Germany comes the self-resetting pixel which promises a way to end overexposure once and for all. Chris remembers MIT's Modulo Camera, which proposed the same method. | The traditional method of film makers to animate static 2D images is getting challenged by researchers at the Portland State University. Their 3D Ken Burns effect is AI generated and actually quite mind-blowing.

Getting the camera up into the air historically required hot air balloons, airplanes, helicopters or pigeons. 1) EarthNow (among others backed by Airbus, Softbank and Bill Gates) are planning to bring us (or rather big businesses and governments) real-time video of the earth from above. Is this beneficial or are we talking about Enemy Of The State territory? We discuss the benefits and the dangers. 2) Flickr was acquired by Smugmug. After Yahoo (and with it Flickr) were bought by Verizon last year, photographers were getting worried about the focus of their platform. We think this current development is a good move.

Out of sync sensory inputs can cause sickness. Car sickness and sea sickness for example. It happens when our vestibular system doesn't agree with our other senses. VR and AR will have the same issue, but for an additional reason: the vergence (angle) and accommodation (focus) of our eyes don't agree in those environments. Wired wrote about this.

017 Photo Enhancements using AI Feb 28, 2018

Increasing resolution of existing photos has traditionally been done by a combination of extrapolation of the existing images, followed by some form of more-or-less smart sharpening. The Max Planck Institute for Intelligent Systems, Tübingen, Germany, has developed a new machine-learning based system named Enhancenet-PAT, which shows much greater success in increasing photo resolution using automated texture synthesis. I want... all my images on all my devices, all edits sync'd, cloud backup, publishing, automatic keywording and a yacht. OK, maybe the yacht is out of scope but the rest is largely available in various forms and Ade has been checking out Google, Adobe and iCloud services to see what works and what really doesn't. Conclusions? This integration or workflow element of our photography is important but which services do Ade and Chris trust with their images and their money?

Chris and Ade explore some new research that just came out of Nvidia, a manufacturer of graphics and machine learning hardware. Happy New Year! The L16 is an interesting beast. 16 cameras and some computational photography make this a brick-shaped camera that is hard to ignore. Chris and Ade bring you some first-hand experience, they discuss what this means for photography and also talk about some of its shortcomings as portrayed by an article on Petapixel.

008 Glitch Art Dec 27, 2017

Glitch art is the practice of using digital or analog errors for aesthetic purposes by either corrupting digital data or physically manipulating electronic devices. It has a long history in movies, music and the arts. It also has some humorous unintentional outlets. A key assumption is that it's ok to destroy pixels - something photographers often try to preserve. And it's GREAT FUN!!! Try it yourself with the DECIM8 app discussed in the show and take a look at one of Chris' projects and a shot by Ade too.

Adam Savage (of Mythbusters fame) makes an interesting observation: lately the cameras that people bring to his live show's meet-and-greets have changed: where people used to bring phones, many of them now bring bigger dedicated cameras and analog media as well. 005 Flat Lenses Dec 06, 2017

Today's lenses are made of solid glass. This makes bigger lenses heavy and bulky. While fresnel lenses have managed to make lenses flatter by splitting them up in concentric circles of lens segments, they have always had some level of quality loss which makes them not ideal to use in photographic applications. Microsoft has now patented a flat lens that uses tiny nano structures on a flat surface to bend light similar to what a traditional lens does. For the future of photography this could mean smaller lenses and thinner smartphones without a camera bump. Don't forget, our robot still has no name and you could choose it and win a t-shirt! 004 Animating Images Nov 29, 2017

In the last few years we have seen many approaches to animating photos. Not video as such, more visual effects for impact and fun. Right now it is getting easier all the time. Chris and Ade discuss how we got here, what tools we can use today and the impact they have on our images. From cinemagraphs, through professional tools and now into consumer space, we have lots to play with. Animoto and Quik will help you with presenting photos to friends and family. And Apple Live Photos, along with Samsung, Google and others will help you get started in the glorious, occasionally cheesy, art of animation.

003 Computational Zoom Nov 24, 2017

What if one photo could contain multiple focal lengths and treat the magnification of background and foreground in a fundamentally different way? Researchers at the UCSB (the University of California, Santa Barbara) have moved one step closer to this. Their research paper shows their algorithm allowing to take a stack of images that was taken from different perspectives and at different focal lengths and combining them into a single photo with variable focal lengths.
