Hopium - a hybrid of hope and opium. We all sometimes want stuff to happen, or be true, or to be as good as it seems. So Jeremiah and Chris have done some digging into UV printing to see how real the recent biggest ever kickstarter might be. And along the way, we smile fondly at the memory of some products that never quite made it - looking at you Light 16!

Every so often we like to ask the question “can we capture still photos from video?” For sure the arts of photography and filming require different camera settings to get desired effects - but what if you just shot video without an ND and let the shutter speed ramp up until you lose the motion blur? Or perhaps go the other way and optimise for video at capture and then process as still images?

We have a whole host of AI tools now to help us. Upscaling, creative adding of detail, plain old “fix my image please AI” tools, the list is ever growing.

Jeremiah and Chris chart a rapid timeline: from 19th-century product photos to the large-format, chrome-gloss ads of the 1960-80s; through the 1990s digital pivot, when Photoshop and backs replaced film; to today’s virtual sets where most product images are CGI — see Zalando, IKEA, and modern car campaigns.

Despite AI and renders, authentic photos still outperform for trust. Technology changes the tools, not the vision—story-driven, light-savvy photographers remain essential, so keep shooting and experimenting.

Show Notes – The Future of Photography

Show Notes – The Future of Photography

This week, Chris and Adrian talk about the rise of digital cameras that simulate the analog experience. From film advance levers and stripped-down interfaces to the absence of screens and menus, more photographers are embracing limitations to rediscover creative freedom. They discuss cameras like the Fujifilm X Half, the Yashica FX-D, and the Pixii Camera, and how these devices cater to a growing desire for intentionality in the digital age. Along the way, they reference earlier pioneers like the Epson R-D1 and the screenless Leica M-D, and reflect on whether JPEGs are becoming the new “film” in a post-editing world.

There has been a lot of hype recently about a new Canon Camera. Is it genuinely innovative? Does it move dials or change games or shift paradigms? Will it help anyone? Time to dive in. Adrian is unreasonably excited, Jeremiah considerably less so - he wants to destroy a bunch of them. Maybe Chris can help us find a balanced view!
