    The Expat Mom Podcast

This is a podcast for expat moms who want to improve their emotional health as they navigate the unique challenges of living and mothering abroad. Each episode shares one tool, idea or perspective shift you can apply immediately to your life and your family. I’m a certified life coach, an expat mom of 4 daughters, and married to a US diplomat. I’ve been abroad many of the last 20 years; I’ve lived on four continents, and in six different countries. I know what it’s like to be stuck emotionally and I know how to get unstuck. This podcast will show you how. You can connect with me at my website http://theexpatmom.com, Instagram @theexpatmomcoach, Facebook @theexpatmomcoach, or Schedule a free, 30-min. mini-coaching session http://theexpatmom.com/schedule

Why Trying to Feel Happier is Making You Miserable Mar 08, 2021
    Show notes

Most of us believe that happiness is superior to other emotions. But is it? Many of us if given the option would love to feel happy all the time--at least we THINK we would. But are there benefits to negative emotions? And does trying to be happier actually lead to feeling happier? Today on the podcast, we address some of these questions. And I share part of my journey with emotional health and emotion.
This month on the podcast we’re covering how to improve your emotional resilience. Studies show that 50% of expats have depression; this is 3x higher than the general population. The risk of anxiety is twice as high as the general population. Given the high amounts of expats with depression and anxiety—we know that there are some factors related to expat life that are challenging to our emotional health. We’ll be covering a few different topics and tools this month order to help us improve our emotional resilience.
    On this episode you'll learn:

    • Why trying to avoid negative emotions often causes us MORE negative emotion
    • The benefits of negative emotion
    • What to do with negative emotions
    • How to solve for the problem—not for the negative emotion itself
