#230 Airfryers. Are they Toxic? With Dr Rupy Aujla and Sakina Okoko Jan 17, 2024
    Show notes

I personally love my airfryer, I’ve been using it at home and in the Doctor’s Kitchen studio since the start of the year, but can they be considered a ‘healthier’ cooking method? This is a question I’m often posed online so we did some research and looked at a few studies.

Air fryers aren’t a new invention, in fact they’ve been around for a number of years but the popularity of them has soared over the last 2 years.

The way air fryers cook foods is by circulating hot hair containing tiny droplets of oil around the foods. It actually mimics the effect of submerging food in hot oil but using significantly less oil. So, it allows quick and even cooking and creates crispy coatings on the outside of the food, with less calories, hence the reputation for being a ‘healthier alternative’ to frying.

On todays episode we looked at the pros and cons of airfrying across a number of domains including:

    • Cost and convenience
    • Preservation of nutrients
    • The detrimental impact of excessive heat on the oils and fat used
    • How they compare with other methods including oven roasting and sauteing
    • The environmental impact considering the materials they are made from

Plus our overall take on how I’m now using my airfryer and newer gadgets to look out for!

#229 Manifesting, Neuroaesthetics and Ancient Wisdom with Dr Tara Swart Jan 10, 2024
    Show notes

Friend of the podcast and one of my favourite authors Dr Tara Swart is back on The Doctor’s Kitchen show today. Neuroscientist, former medical doctor and author of “The Source”, a book that has been hugely impactful to my career and mindset.

She’s also host of top rated life sciences podcast “Reinvent Yourself with Dr Tara”, and brand ambassador in beauty and well-being.

Today we’re going to talk about neuroplasticity and the ability of every human to adapt and change way later in life than we originally thought. Dr Tara will talk to us about exercises for how to better tap into the potential of our brains, as well as the science of why manifesting and vision boarding (also known as ‘action boarding’) works as well as how ancient wisdom has influenced her medical practice.

Her idea is simple: no matter how old, how stubborn, or how set in their ways, everyone has the capacity to change. And to add to that, everyone has the ability to manifest a future for themselves full of love, joy, health and whatever you desire. But your mindset and willingness to let go is crucial. You will love Tara’s science influenced approach to manifesting and ancient practices.

#228 Sugar Crashes, Attention Deficit, Psychedelics and Food as Medicine. 5 lessons from the Podcast in 2023 with Dr Rupy Aujla Dec 27, 2023
    Show notes

Today we’re wrapping up our podcast year with 5 impactful conversations from 2023. This year has been an incredible journey learning more about food and medicine and I hope you’ve found the lessons from the podcast as fascinating as I have!

First off I share a snippet from my conversation with Dr Robert Lustig (#209 Why a calorie is not a calorie) about whether you can you be a sugar aholic? Robert’s passion for this subject is palpable, and perhaps after hearing Dr. Robert Lustig, Professor of Pediatric Endocrinology at the University of California, talk on the subject today, you might be inclined to review your sugar intake yourself?

The realisation of our dropping attention spans is worrying. You don’t have to ask many people in your network to realise that this phenomenon is not unique. This conversation I had with Johann Hari (#193 Why you can't focus) encouraged me to inject mind wandering into my daily routine.

Jessie Inchauspé is now a global phenomena and has influenced millions of people to become more conscious about the impact of sugar spikes on their wellbeing. In this snippet (#144 Flatten Your Glucose Levels), we focus on Jessie’s backstory and what led her to pursue a career in science and the revelation of how her own glucose rollercoasters were affecting her health.

Professor David Nutt is at the forefront of psychedelic research and on this podcast (#211 Psychedelics and the new era of Psychiatry) he breaks down what these molecules are, the research behind them and why he believes they have great promise for mental health and beyond.

And lastly, but by no means least, my conversation with Sheila Dillon (#156 The Power of Food). Sheila’s realisation around food and medicine, touching on her own experience of cancer, her sisters and the phenomenal impact of the food programme to spark ideas and challenge dogma in our crazy complicated world of food.

#227 The Benefits of Eating with Friends with Dr Rupy Aujla, Sakina Okoko and Órfhlaith Noone Dec 20, 2023
    Show notes

“How to eat with friends and be healthier”

When was the last time you sat down at a dinner table and shared a meal with friends over laughter and stories?

If you’re lucky, you’ll be able to remember a time in the last couple of days. And if you’re averse to the idea of going through the effort of having to find someone to share a meal with, research shows it has benefits!

Recent studies found that regularly eating with others is linked to feeling happier, more satisfied with life and trusting of others. For children and adolescents, frequent family meals were associated with better health outcomes. But why?

We’ll talk about the evidence based reasons for the health benefits of sharing food around a table, including the evolutionary link as an adaptive benefit from our hunter-gatherer ancestors to the psychological reasons as well as practical benefits!

I’ll certainly be eating with friends twice a week from now on! To talk about this topic I have researcher and science writer at Doctor’s Kitchen Sakina Okoko as well as our food producer for the DK app Órfhlaith Noone.

#226 5 better ways to enjoy your Carbs with Dr Rupy Aujla Dec 13, 2023
    Show notes

Carbohydrates are a food component that is regularly debated in the nutrition world – they have a bad rep for weight loss and diabetes, but on the other hand they are prioritised by athletes?

There have been quite a few studies on the associations between total carb intake and health outcomes, but still there are still some contradictions and nuances, especially because studies often group all carbohydrates together rather than separating them by food source.

So we did some research to come up with our take on carbohydrates based on the current evidence PLUS how we’re applying it to our meals.

Today we’re looking at 5 ways to eat carbs to maintain blood sugar balance. What’s best for health and some easy rules of them that you can apply every day when you eat carbohydrates so you can enjoy them!

BONUS Donna Hay on Flavour, Fame and Healthy Hacks Dec 11, 2023
    Show notes

You can tell how excited I was to have Donna Hay visit our studio this week! I’ve been an avid fan for years and we were privileged to have her grace our kitchen to record a recipe for our YouTube channel and even jump on the podcast!

Donna Hay is Australia's favourite and most trusted home cook, a household name, and an international food-publishing phenomenon. Donna's 29 books have sold more than 7 million copies worldwide, been translated into 10 different languages, and her television cooking shows have brought her signature style to life for viewers in more than 14 countries.

And when I say signature style, her styling is absolutely iconic and it’s inspired myself as well as many budding home cooks around the world.

Her latest book, ‘even more basics to brilliance’ is a collection of classics that people can always rely on – those dependable, delicious recipes we all want in our bag of tricks. And is a follow on from the previous book “Basics to Brilliance”

    Today we talk about:

    Injecting flavour into healthy ingredients

Her go to store cupboard and pantry ingredients

What food styling can do to create anticipation around a meal

I was also interested in her own health hacks and how she keeps healthy when travelling. Plus we talk about her business empire and how she maintains a clear brand presence and identity, despite the wealth of touchpoints from books, cookware, magazines and TV shows.

#225 Seasonal Affective Disorder with Dr Rupy Aujla Dec 06, 2023
    Show notes

Today I’m talking about SAD, also known as Seasonal Affective Disorder because I was recently asked to explain it on BBC morning TV. It’s surprisingly common and debilitating for millions of people in the UK alone, and frustratingly there is not too much known about the cause and a real lack of research.

SAD is also referred to as Winter Depression and may have similarities to depression in the way of symptoms, but it’s hard to determine whether there are similarities in the mechanism that drives the symptoms themselves.

Today I’ll talk about the proposed causes, evidence for diet and lifestyle interventions and what you can do today to help yourselves.

#224 Sugar in Fruit with Dr Rupy and Sakina Okoko Nov 29, 2023
    Show notes

A common question I get is whether the sugar in fruit could be as dangerous and toxic as the sugar we find in canned drinks, sweets and other sources of added sugars found mostly in processed foods.

And sugar has been a hot topic of discussion in the past few years particularly as people become more aware of the importance of regulating blood sugar levels and avoiding large & frequent spikes.

In addition, we hear regularly from health organisations and experts that we should eat less sugar because of its deleterious effects on the body. But we’re also told we should eat more fruit, which naturally contains sugar. So is sugar in fruit bad or is there more to it?

    Today we talk about

    • The science behind the sweetness: why plants produce sugars, the types of sugars and amounts found in different fruit
    • How sugar in fruit is handled by the body
    • Whether fructose is better than glucose
    • Some tips to enjoy fruit while being aware of blood glucose levels

#223 What Women need to know about the Menopause with Dr Louise Newson Nov 22, 2023
    Show notes

Why do women struggle with weight during and after the menopause? This is the key question I’m putting to Dr Louise Newson on todays podcast as it’s the most commonly asked question that I get from Doctor’s Kitchen followers as well as from patients during my medical career.

She is the perfect person to be discussing this topic as Dr Louise Newson is one of the UK's leading medical experts on the menopause and has championed women's health for years. I also discuss with Dr Louise the 3 key things that all women should understand about the menopause.

Having worked as a GP as well as opening the Newson Health menopause clinic, she has built a wealth of knowledge from first-hand experience of treating perimenopausal and menopausal women. And she’s also written “The Definitive Guide to the Perimenopause and Menopause” which lays out everything women need to know to understand and reclaim their power during this stage. Her book covers:

    - The key facts about hormones

    - An essential guide to HRT

    - Navigating an early menopause

    - Exercising and Eating during the menopause

    - Taking care of your mental health

We also discuss the unlikely way in which Louise found out about her own menopause, which just goes to show how unaware we could all be about these symptoms!
