Revising the Age of the Universe - Dr. Rajendra Gupta, DSPod 189 Sep 25, 2023
    Show notes

Dr. Rajendra Gupta is a cosmologist and professor of physics at the University of Ottawa. He has dedicated his work to making sense of images from the new James Webb telescope that appear to contradict the established Big Bang timeline for the universe. Dr. Gupta's explains the recently observed mature galaxies at just 300 million years post-Bang by revising the age of the universe and invoking forsaken ideas like variable constants and tired light. The task remains to explain the cause of this variation. Tell us your ideas in the comments! (00:00:00) Go! (00:00:19) Raj Gupta in the press

Challenging Einstein with ChatGPT - Steven Bryant, Computer Scientist DSPod 185 Sep 10, 2023
    Show notes

Steve Bryant is an author, researcher and futurist who studies the innovative application of emerging technologies, who has long been curious about the gaps and inconsistencies of general relativity. Armed with Chat GPT with a Wolfram Alpha plugin, Bryant combed through Einstein’s papers, where he discovered key mathematical inconsistencies that invalidate the mathematical basis of Einstein’s most famous theorem. We discuss the simple mathematical proof for what Bryant has discovered, the difficulty of unseating beloved ideas, and what comes after relativity.

Dr. Lindzen has disputed the scientific consensus on climate change and criticizes what he has called "climate alarmism". Science is a Strong Link Problem - Dr. Adam Mastroianni, Experimental History - DS 182 Aug 31, 2023
    Show notes

Dr. Adam Mastroianni is a Harvard and Oxford educated psychologist who loves the idea of science, but not so much it's modern practice. After being told one too many times that his academic writing was "too fun" for academic journals, he decided to devote his time to what science should actually look like - which is passionate people being free to explore the ideas that keep them up at night. He writes prolifically about this at his Experimental History Substack, and on the podcast we talk about how peer review made everything fall apart, how all the bad papers in the world can't take down a single good idea, and the dream of buying a house in Boston and filling it with people who can spend all their free time thinking their way out of the box we're in. Rage Against the Cathedral - Curtis Yarvin, Dark Enlightenment - DSci 181 Aug 28, 2023
    Show notes

Curtis Yarvin is a blogger from the Dark Enlightenment movement, who advocates for the position that democracy is a failed experiment that should be replaced with an accountable monarchy that mirrors the structure at the top of corporations. One of the main points of evidence for how democracy has failed is the emergence of science as a phenomenon of trust and power, where consensus is used as a cudgel to nudge and motivate the behavior of populations, downstream of a complex mixture of financial and personal incentives. We talk about the nature of this degradation, the burden of proof in a world that's one step short of a simulation, and the path our from the crisis we're in.

Superconductors, Material Atomics, and Electron Oscillators - Dr. Inna Vishik, UC Davis DSci #180 Aug 24, 2023
    Show notes

Dr. Inna Vishik is a professor of Physics at UC Davis, where her lab studies the spectroscopic properties of exotic condensed matter. We dig down into how she sees the atomic landscapes she studies, the significance of mathematical descriptions that show up all over the place, harmonic oscillators at the scale of an electron, and why physics is perfectly happy to deal in abstractions, even when better models might be available.
