First Case of Coronavirus Hits the U.S. Jan 22, 2020
    Show notes

The CDC has reported that the first case of the Chinese coronavirus outbreak has hit the U.S. The man infected is from Washington State and the CDC confirmed he had it with a genetic test. The virus is zoonotic which means it can be transmitted from animals to humans, but it can also be passed between humans. Dan Vergano, science reporter for Buzzfeed News, joins us for what we know about coronavirus.

Next, there is a campaign to redefine something called “Chinese Restaurant Syndrome.” It is an entry in the Miriam-Webster dictionary that describes symptoms of numbness, dizziness, and palpitations affecting people who eat Chinese food with MSG. Activists say that this definition and stigma surrounding MSG are unfounded and rooted in racism. Amelia Nierenberg, food reporter for the NY Times, joins us for the campaign to #RedfineCRS.

Finally, west coast transplants are starting to ruin the small-town vibes of places like Boise and Star, Idaho. Many people, often from California, are coming to these small towns for the slower pace of life and cheaper housing costs, but as they come in droves, they are bringing the same problems they were trying to escape. Dan Frosch, reporter for the WSJ, joins us for how managing growth is the big problem facing these small towns.

New Action on Immigration and Two Endorsements From the NY Times Jan 21, 2020
    Show notes

The next big immigration move that the Trump administration will be taking is action to tackle birth tourism. “Birth tourists” often come to the U.S. from China, Russia, and Nigeria to have their children so they can have U.S. citizenship. New regulations would alter the requirements for B visas also known as visitor visas. One key thing to watch out for will be any lawsuits that could be filed against the changes. Stef Kight, immigration reporter at Axios, joins us for how the administration plans to limit birth tourism.

Next, the NY Times has made an endorsement for 2020. Actually, they made two endorsements. The Democratic Party as whole has not made a decision of where it wants to go… a more progressive route or moderate. So, breaking with convention, the NYT editorial board has decided to endorse both Sen. Amy Klobuchar as a moderate choice and Sen. Elizabeth Warren as a more progressive choice. Democratic voters must decide which model they want to go with that would have the best chance of beating President Trump and moving the country forward. To help explain this decision, we speak to Mara Gay from the NY Times Editorial Board.

Trump Impeachment Trial and How Tiffany Moved 114,000 Gems Without Getting Robbed Jan 20, 2020
    Show notes

On Tuesday, the Senate impeachment trial of Donald Trump really gets underway and even though we almost certainly know the outcome, the President will be acquitted, it is a historic moment nonetheless. The strategy will be to admit nothing, apologize for nothing, and challenge the whole thing on constitutional grounds. Ginger Gibson, political reporter for Reuters, tells us the main arguments, who is on Trump’s legal team, and how Senators will have to deal with no cellphones and no talking.

Next, the famous flagship store for Tiffany and Company in New York had to move to a new location so the building could be renovated. While the move to a temporary location was short, it took dozens of security guards, hundreds of cameras, and a vow of secrecy from workers to move 114,000 gems without getting robbed. James Barron, reporter for the NY Times, joins us for how Tiffany pulled off this big move and get it all done before time of opening Monday morning.

Congress Opens the Impeachment Trial of President Trump Jan 17, 2020
    Show notes

Historic day on Thursday Congress opened the impeachment trial of President Trump. House Democrats read the formal charges and all 100 senators were sworn in as jurors. And just before all this happened, the GAO released a report saying that the administration’s Office of Management and Budget violated the law when it withheld military aid to Ukraine. Caitlin Emma, Reporter for Politico, joins us for more.

Next, the fight for privacy is under way again between Apple and the FBI. After a December 6th shooting at a naval base in Pensacola Florida was deemed an act of terrorism, Attorney General Bill Barr said Apple wasn’t doing enough to help unlock the shooter’s two phones. Apple maintains that breaking encryption on one phone could endanger the privacy of all iPhone users. Rosie Perper, global reporter for Business Insider, joins us for the fight to unlock a terrorist’s phone.

Finally, new data released by NASA and NOAA has shown that 2019 capped the hottest decade in recorded history. The past 5 years each rank among the 5 hottest years since record-keeping began. Brady Dennis, national environmental reporter at The Washington Post, joins us joins us for more on how this warming trend is affecting the globe.

Articles of Impeachment Delivered to Senate Jan 16, 2020
    Show notes

The House has delivered the articles of impeachment formally to the Senate so they can begin their trial. Speaker Nancy Pelosi also named a seven-member prosecution team to make the case for impeachment. One of the biggest questions that remain are whether any witnesses will be called and if new evidence released by Democrats will make any impact. Brett Samuels, White House reporter at The Hill, joins us for more.

Next, the FAA is investigating why a Delta airlines plane making an emergency landing at LAX dropped jet fuel over a playground covering children and some adults. Special procedures dictate that if necessary, fuel dumps must be made from higher altitudes and over unpopulated areas. Thankfully there were no serious injuries. Colleen Shalby, reporter at the LA Times, joins us for more on the outrage after this fuel was dumped on kids.

Finally, the last Democratic debate before the Iowa caucuses was on Tuesday and everyone was waiting for fireworks between Sen. Bernie Sanders and Sen. Elizabeth Warren for comments he allegedly made saying a woman could not win the presidency. While the candidates did play nice on stage, there was a tense moment between the two after the debate. Emily Glazer, politics reporter at the WSJ, join us for the moments that mattered in the debate.

Russians Hacked Burisma, Gas Company That Played Major Role in Ukraine Scandal Jan 15, 2020
    Show notes

Russian military agents have hacked into Burisma, the Ukrainian gas company at the center of the scandal that led to President Trump’s impeachment. The tactics used were phishing emails used to steal login credentials and also gain access to one of Burisma’s servers. We still know very little about the information that was accessed, but any new information could impact the impeachment trial. Maggie Miller, cyber policy reporter at The Hill, joins us for more.

Next, a creepy airport story. A woman named Ashley Barno was boarding a flight at the San Diego International Airport when she began to receive flirty text messages from an unknown number. The texts soon turned out to be from an American Airlines employee who got her information off of her luggage bag tag. Barno is now suing the airline for negligent hiring, sexual harassment and stalking. Reis Thebault, reporter at the Washington Post, joins us for what all these texts said.

Finally, the Pentagon has confirmed that they do have Top Secret- classified briefings and Secret-classified video about the Nimitz UFO encounter. The Navy has said that a review of the materials determined that their release “would cause exceptionally grave damage to the National Security of the United States.” MJ Banias, contributor to Vice, joins us for the latest we are learning about the Nimitz UFO evidence.

Brent Lang, executive editor for film and media at Variety joins us to discuss the nominations and who got snubbed.

Next, in the music industry, everyone is worried about getting sued and music copyright lawsuits could be scaring away new hits.
