Coronavirus: Community Spread in New York Mar 06, 2020
    Show notes

COVID-19 continues to spread and this time we take a look at New York, which has at least 22 cases. Most of the new cases in NY are the result of a community spread and are tied to a lawyer in Manhattan who has underlying respiratory issues. He infected his family, then a neighbor, then friends and it has led to about 1,000 people self-quarantining. In the meantime, NY continues to monitor and test those who are at risk of having contracted the virus. Ben Guarino, reporter at the Washington Post, joins us for more on the COVID-19 spread.

Next, some lighter fare… It’s hard to beat that multisensory experience of eating something nice and crispy… the sight, the taste, the feel, and especially the sound. We will talk about the entire industry dedicated to making foods crispy and crunchy. Think of crispy chips and crunchy chicken sandwiches, we’ll talk about how companies perfect recipes for mass production and beyond that… how they also market crispiness through sound and looks. Alex Beggs, writer at Bon Appetit, joins us for more.

Finally, the Pentagon is sitting on a bunch of valuable airwaves, and we don’t know exactly why. As more companies are getting ready to set up 5G networks, they will require large swaths of airwaves that live in the “mid-band” set of frequencies. But the Pentagon owns much of these airwaves and doesn’t want to let go. Bryan Bender, senior national correspondent at Politico, joins us for more.

Coronavirus: How Cotton Gloves Could Help Stop the Spread Mar 04, 2020
    Show notes

What do you do if you suspect you might have coronavirus? First thing you should do, is call your doctor, rather than drive down there. You don’t want to spread the virus if you can help it. Next, the Supreme Court has agreed to hear the third major challenge to the Affordable Care Act and the timing of it all will make it a major campaign issue for the election. The Trump administration supports doing away with the ACA and oral arguments before the court could weeks or even days ahead of Election Day 2020. Caitlin Owens, healthcare reporter at Axios, joins us for more.

Finally, it can be pretty scary when your teen starts driving. The good thing however, is that parents and insurers can both track your kids with new apps that allow parents to monitor acceleration and hard braking, even when you are calling or texting. Insurers sometimes offer discounts for using the monitoring apps. Julie Jargon, family and tech columnist at the Wall Street Journal, joins us for how to track the kids without being in the car.

Police Mislead Woman to Obtain Her DNA and Then Arrest Her Son for a Cold Case Murder Mar 02, 2020
    Show notes

A woman in Georgia is crying foul saying that police detectives lied to her in order to obtain her DNA. Police then used that DNA and the relatively new investigative genetic genealogy technique to match her son to a cold case murder. Asking innocent people to voluntarily provide their DNA is known as “target testing” and when this case goes to trial in June, it could be the first to explore how police conduct investigations using genetic genealogy. Jon Schuppe, reporter for NBC News Digital, joins us for how once again the use of genetic genealogy by police is being questioned.
