Show notes

When President Trump officially announced the tariffs his administration would place on countries around the world just over a month ago, he warned that there would be a painful adjustment period. But he also claimed that it would be worth it in the end. And while it is still far too early to know if he was correct, the trade deal he announced with the United Kingdom yesterday morning could offer a glimpse into what’s to come.

Show notes

At 11:08 a.m., Central Daylight Time, white smoke emerged from above the Sistine Chapel, announcing to the world that a new pope has been elected to lead the Roman Catholic Church. A long list of candidates had been in speculation for days. Betting platforms had an Italian cardinal in the lead, with a Filipino candidate second. None had an American high on their list, as no American has ever been selected as pope.

Will conflict escalate between nuclear-armed India and Pakistan? May 08, 2025

Show notes

Nuclear-armed India and Pakistan are on the brink of direct conflict for the first time since 2019. This after India launched deadly strikes yesterday on Pakistan and Islamabad claimed to have downed several Indian warplanes. Wars are most typically fought over competing claims to the same territory or versions of the same story. Such conflicts illustrate the fact that being convinced something is true does not make it so. This fact is, of course, much more exacerbated when our opinions are wrong with regard to eternity.

Show notes

Police in England arrested five men, including four Iranian nationals, over the weekend in what is being described as one of the largest counter-terrorism operations in recent years. Authorities report that the “Iranian terror attack” was foiled with just hours to spare. Speculation mounted that the target may have been a synagogue or another target linked to the Jewish community. If so, we can only wish to be surprised.

Warren Buffett’s retirement and his view of the future: The power of predictions and the urgency of revival May 05, 2025

Show notes

Warren Buffett is retiring at the end of the year. According to Forbes, Buffett is worth $168.2 billion. His company, Berkshire Hathaway, ended March 2025 with $347.7 billion on hand. All that to say, when Buffett discusses the economy, people listen. At his company’s annual meeting this Saturday, people came from around the world to hear the ninety-four-year-old investment guru. He stated that “balanced trade is good for the world” and that “trade should not be a weapon,” but he also urged patience to investors worried about the future. Following this story over the weekend prompted me to reflect on the power predictions have to become reality and the significance of this power for our souls and society.

May Day protests and Israel’s Independence Day: What the contrast says about our nation and our souls May 02, 2025

Show notes

Thousands of people took to the streets across America yesterday in May Day protests against the Trump administration. The protests were organized under the banner of the 50501 movement, which stands for “fifty protests, fifty states, one movement,” which seeks to “uphold the Constitution and end executive overreach.” Like the US, Israel has seen large anti-government protests in recent years. But there is a key difference between the two nations, one that reveals a principle vital to our future and the flourishing of our souls.

How to hear God’s voice: A guide to making today’s National Day of Prayer the most significant yet May 01, 2025

Show notes

Get your copy of Who Am I? today.

Since 1775, our nation has asked its people to join together in prayer for the battles ahead, and the National Day of Prayer continues that legacy. As you join others in prayer today, remember that prayer isn’t performance; it’s participation. God isn’t looking for the right words but a receptive heart. Learning to listen when we pray is one of the most important aspects of communing with God. Unfortunately, it’s also the part of prayer that can feel most difficult.

New study: Mifepristone far more dangerous than advertised: America’s primary abortion pill causes serious complications for 1 out of 10 women Apr 30, 2025

Show notes

Mifepristone, one of two pills used in facilitating chemical abortions, gained FDA approval twenty-five years ago after a study of just under thirty-one thousand participants showed that less than .5 percent experienced serious adverse reactions. That statistic has since been cited to defend not only the use of the pill but also the removal of almost every safeguard that was put in place when it was first introduced to the public. A recent analysis by the Ethics and Public Policy Center (EPPC) of more than 865,000 cases since 2017 has shown that serious complications are twenty-two times more likely to occur than either the FDA or the pill’s makers have claimed.

Trump’s first hundred days and Judge Hannah Dugan’s arrest Apr 29, 2025

Show notes

Today marks the one hundredth day of President Trump’s second term. While the numbers vary depending on the poll, the consensus seems to be that roughly 40 percent of Americans approve of how Trump’s term has gone so far, but even his approval ratings among Republicans have started to fall in recent weeks. This shift is largely due to the belief that he has become overly reliant on executive orders and the fear that his approach will eventually lead him into a confrontation with the judiciary. Few stories have epitomized the nature of Trump’s perceived battle with the courts better than the arrest of Milwaukee County Circuit Judge Hannah Dugan last week.
