Article Description

A New York Times article written about this week’s passing of Jimmy Swaggart was authored by a journalist who himself died five years ago. So we know that the Times has, for several years, planned to run a profile of the evangelist that was written years before his death. The good news is that, with God, our story is never over until it’s over. My purpose is not to minimize Jimmy Swaggart’s faults. Rather, it is to point to the transforming grace of Christ whereby no sinner is beyond the reach of repentance and redemption.

Yesterday afternoon, the US Senate passed the “One Big Beautiful Bill Act,” President Trump’s signature legislative priority. The tally was fifty-fifty, with Vice President JD Vance casting the tie-breaking vote. The legislation now returns to the House, where voting is scheduled to begin later today. The complicated process through which this bill passed is a feature of American governance, not a bug. And that feature is foundational to our flourishing—but with an enormous caveat.

Article Description

The Supreme Court last Friday upheld a ruling that allowed Texas to enforce a state law requiring pornography sites to verify the age of their users before providing access. Nearly half of all states have passed similar laws to keep children under the age of eighteen from seeing online pornography. Such laws are crucial because, as the Gen Z writer Freya India warns, “Modern porn is unlikely anything else in history.” You and I live in a society that has normalized sexual immorality on a level many of us scarcely realize, but Christ has already paved the way to rescue us.

Supreme Court enables states to defund Planned Parenthood Jun 27, 2025

Show notes

The Supreme Court is expected to announce major decisions this morning on birthright citizenship, age verification for pornography sites, and several other contentious issues. However, its ruling yesterday is already making headlines: the court handed down a decision that could pave the way for states to defund Planned Parenthood, the largest abortion provider in the US. When should the Supreme Court overrule laws passed by states? The question points to a topic we have reason to discuss often in this space: How do we best promote the morality that is foundational to democracy?

Pedro Pascal calls JK Rowling a “heinous loser” Jun 26, 2025

On the anniversary of Harry Potter’s release, both JK Rowling and Pedro Pascal are in the news—not for their work, but their opposing convictions. Rowling has been “vociferously castigated” for defending biological sex; Pascal, in support of his transgender sibling, called her a “heinous loser.” As our nation’s culture continues to shift away from the “morals and religion” of our founding fathers, we remember that the gospel has thrived most fully across Christian history when the culture has been most antagonistic to its truth.

Article Description

Andrew Cuomo conceded in yesterday’s New York City mayoral Democratic primary to Muslim socialist Zohran Mamdani. A Democratic strategist called the former governor’s loss the “biggest upset in modern New York City history.” Mamdani made headlines with his strong support for Palestinians and criticism of Israel. With five likely candidates, including incumbent mayor Eric Adams running as an independent, the general election in November could be “the strangest local election in at least half a century.”

Israel says Iran violated ceasefire, orders new strikes Jun 24, 2025

Show notes

After yesterday’s proclamation of a ceasefire between Israel and Iran within twenty-four hours, Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz said he had ordered the military to strike Tehran in response to what he said were missiles fired by Iran in violation of the ceasefire. However, Iran denied violating the ceasefire, stating that there had not been any launch of missiles towards Israel in recent hours. Because Israel’s enemies are ultimately motivated by religious beliefs, this is ultimately a spiritual war. And when fighting a spiritual war, we are to stand firm while “praying at all times in the Spirit. Today, we discuss how to do just that.

“The moment the Middle East changed forever”? Jun 23, 2025

Show notes

Saturday brought about a world-altering moment when the United States launched a major offensive against Iran’s nuclear infrastructure in June 2025. Using B-2 Spirit bombers and submarine-launched cruise missiles, the US targeted key Iranian sites at Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan in a decisive and stealthy campaign, described by CNN as a potential turning point in the Middle East’s geopolitical balance. How will Iran respond against Israel? How will Iran respond against the US? How will this conflict end? And how should we as Christians respond to the many “unknown unknowns" this week?

Supreme Court rules on medical treatment of transgender kids Jun 20, 2025

Show notes

On Wednesday, the Supreme Court upheld Tennessee’s ban on the use of hormone therapy and puberty blockers for the treatment of transgender children. The case—United States v. Skrmetti—was brought before the court on the argument that the law was unconstitutional because it violated the rights of transgender youth to equal protection. They were wrong, and the potential implications could stretch well beyond the state of Tennessee. So, where does this fight go from here? And, as Christians, how should we respond?

Deep Dive: What does the Bible say about transgenderism?
