If we prevent bullying, can we prevent mass shootings? Aug 24, 2022
    Show notes

Technology has made it harder to escape bullies, as they can now follow you wherever you go through social media, and that's contributed greatly to higher levels of stress and less emotional margin for teens and children. And such stress is not confined to young people, with many adults now beginning to experience similar kinds of cyberbullying as the move to working remotely eliminates many of the social barriers that helped to check such actions in the office. So what are some steps we can take to help protect ourselves and others when they face such abuse?

The surprising result if Liz Cheney runs for president Aug 24, 2022
    Show notes

If Rep. Liz Cheney runs for president in 2024 against Joe Biden and Donald Trump, her effect would likely not be her intent, according to a new Yahoo News/YouGov poll. In other news, the UN is preparing to declare abortion a “human right.” In The Daily Article for August 24, 2022, Dr. Jim Denison considers these stories and more as he looks at how Christian truth has come to be culturally defined at hate speech and why our culture has “exchanged the truth about God for a lie.”

Dr. Fauci announces his retirement, response is what you’d expect Aug 23, 2022
    Show notes

Dr. Anthony S. Fauci announced yesterday that he will step down in December as Director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases and Chief Medical Advisor to President Joe Biden. The response appears to be partisan, as many Democrats praised Dr. Fauci and many Republicans criticized him. In The Daily Article for August 23, 2022, Dr. Jim Denison considers what the divided response says about our country and why Christians should exemplify a third way that pursues God while seeking civility, decency, and unity.

Former CIA director calls GOP the most “dangerous” political force in the world Aug 22, 2022
    Show notes

The former director of the CIA recently claimed that the modern-day Republican Party is the most “dangerous” political force he has ever seen. Today’s levels of political divisiveness and hatred challenge our confidence in democracy itself. In The Daily Article for August 22, 2022, Dr. Jim Denison argues that it is urgent for Christians to be part of the solution and not part of the problem, and that we must refuse to condemn those with whom we disagree.

Pastor berates congregation for not buying him designer watch, then apologizes Aug 19, 2022
    Show notes

A pastor’s sermon in Kansas City went viral recently for all the wrong reasons: during his message, he lambasted his congregation for not buying him the luxury watch he had requested. But here’s the good news: the pastor later apologized for what he called his “inexcusable” remarks. In The Daily Article for August 19, 2022, Dr. Jim Denison considers religion as transaction and religion as relationship, asks if America is or will soon be under God’s judgment, and whether Christians in America are blessing our country to be a blessing to others.

Battle-equipped robot dog debuts at Russian arms fair Aug 18, 2022
    Show notes

A robot dog with a rocket-propelled grenade strapped to its back has been unveiled at a Russian arms fair. Two high school students in California have identified two new scorpion species (as though we needed any more). These stories and others illustrate our mortality. However, my purpose is not to depress us but to encourage us. Since we have only this day, we are free to focus fully on this day. When we do that, we experience the eternal significance of present faithfulness.

CDC director admits COVID-19 response “did not reliably meet expectations” Aug 18, 2022
    Show notes

In light of its failed response to COVID-19, Dr. Rochelle Walensky, director of the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, announced yesterday a “reset” that will focus on making the CDC quicker to respond to new health threats. The US Dept. of Justice is investigating the SBC. And Hillsong Church is being sued by a whistleblower. In The Daily Article for August 18, 2022, Dr. Jim also discusses the problem with “political religion,” our need for accountability, and how submitting to the Holy Spirit allows us to transform culture. For more on living this day fully for eternal purposes, see Dr. Denison's article, “Battle-equipped robot dog debuts at Russian arms fair.”)

A “limited” nuclear war would starve millions of people Aug 17, 2022
    Show notes

It is frustrating to face enemies we thought we had already defeated. A new study reports that even a “relatively small nuclear war” would “create a worldwide food crisis lasting at least a decade in which hundreds of millions would starve.” We thought the demise of the Cold War would lower the prospects of nuclear confrontation, but this existential and cataclysmic threat clearly persists. When we face daunting challenges, it is human nature to try harder to do better. But still our crises persist. Let’s consider another approach: from David, the author of Psalm 57. Liz Cheney loses to candidate endorsed by Donald Trump Aug 17, 2022
    Show notes

As a result of her opposition to the former president, Liz Cheney was defeated last night in a landslide, losing the Republican primary to Harriet Hageman, a political newcomer who was endorsed by Trump. In The Daily Article for August 17, 2022, Dr. Jim Denison also quotes from Thomas S. Kidd’s book on Thomas Jefferson, noting that Jefferson, as well as our current society, has a “dissonance between stated belief and practiced reality.” He then shares the news of author Frederick Buechner’s death at ninety-six and quotes Buechner on proving God’s existence. For more on practical ways to trust God for his best, read “A ‘limited’ nuclear war would starve millions of people.”

Caregiver asks adults with Down syndrome to be her bridesmaids Aug 16, 2022
    Show notes

A caregiver in the UK named Kayrin Callaghan knew who she wanted for her bridesmaids the moment her fiancé proposed to her. Kayrin has supported a woman with Down syndrome for two years and also helps three others. She asked the four of them to be part of her wedding. In the midst of pain and tragedy, stories of hope stand out like a ray of sunshine on a stormy day. But there’s a deeper reason we resonate with stories of grace: we were created by grace to experience grace and to give the grace we receive.
