President Biden’s speech from Independence Hall and the “soul” of America Sep 02, 2022
    Show notes

President Joe Biden delivered a speech last night from Independence Hall in Philadelphia, saying that the “soul” of the nation is under threat from MAGA Republicans. The Republican National Committee, in turn, called Mr. Biden the “divider-in-chief.” When political parties see the other as a hostile threat, how can Christians live and speak such that America can renew its moral and spiritual commitments without further strife and division?

The fate of giants: How Facebook’s decline mirrors problems in today’s church Sep 01, 2022
    Show notes

David Leonhardt of the New York Times recently wrote an insightful article detailing Facebook's four main problems: age, innovation, the metaverse, and antitrust issues. In Facebook's decline as a popular social media destination, Denison Forum staff writer Chris Elkins sees parallels with the church at large. Is the church too big to fail, or does the church need to assess its issues before it's too late?

How likely is civil war in America? Sep 01, 2022
    Show notes

A new poll asked Americans about changes in the US political climate, including whether divisions have worsened and what they expect for the future. The divisions and distrust reflected in these polls are ominous for our future as the “United” States of America. In The Daily Article for September 1, 2022, Jim Denison, PhD, considers the plausibility of another civil war occurring in America, relates a sobering history lesson concerning the fall of the Babylonian Empire, and concludes by quoting Samuel Adams on how to be “the truest friend of the liberty of his country.”

Viral social media app BeReal bucks "inauthentic" Instagram and TikTok Aug 31, 2022
    Show notes

BeReal has exploded in popularity, partially due to its claims to defy all of the “inauthentic” parts of Instagram and TikTok. The app encourages you to take a picture of your normal life. With no ability to edit the photos, BeReal claims it can provide the fun of interacting with friends without the downsides of other social media. How does BeReal work? And does the app achieve true authenticity?

Last Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev dies at 91: A surprising part of his historic story Aug 31, 2022
    Show notes

Mikhail Gorbachev, the last leader of the Soviet Union, passed away yesterday at the age of ninety-one. When he came to power in 1985, he introduced key political and economic reforms to the USSR that helped end the Cold War without the firing of a single shot. For his courageous leadership, he was awarded the 1990 Nobel Peace Prize. However, many Russians today do not view him in a positive light. In The Daily Article for August 31, 2022, Dr. Jim Denison considers the tension of Russian–American relations today and why we need a Power beyond ourselves.

Student raises funds to help him adopt baby he found in trash can Aug 30, 2022
    Show notes

A university student has raised more than $159,000 in donations to help him adopt a baby he found abandoned in a trash can while visiting his family in Haiti. Other headlines, like Serena Williams’ first-round US Open victory last night after having announced her retirement earlier this month, encourage us. But when people act in hurtful ways, we feel worse about human nature. In The Daily Article for August 30, 2022, Dr. Jim Denison considers how we measure God by the evidence, then looks at the time Jesus literally fell asleep during a storm in Matthew 8—and what Jesus’ response tells us about God’s power and willingness to save.

Matt Chandler placed on leave from The Village Church Aug 29, 2022
    Show notes

According to a statement by The Village Church, a woman approached pastor Matt Chandler a few months ago with “concerns about the way he was using direct messaging on social media with a woman who was not his wife.” Chandler told the church yesterday that the messages were not sexual or romantic but that they crossed a line with their “frequency” and “familiarity.” He has since been placed on a leave of absence for “disciplinary and developmental” reasons. In The Daily Article for August 29, 2022, Dr. Jim Denison offers four biblical responses to this breaking story and three bold statements for all Christians.

“It had to be God”: Bus driver helps save kids from floodwater Aug 26, 2022
    Show notes

A driver and monitor on a school bus in Dallas, Texas, helped save two children who were caught up and nearly swept away in the recent flooding in our area. The driver said later, “It had to be God to send me that way because I don’t normally go that way.” In The Daily Article for August 26, 2022, Dr. Jim Denison looks at the bleak state of schools resuming amid increased violence and anxiety, turns to Arthur C. Brooks on how to change minds, and concludes with a reminder that “the key to living a transformed life that draws others to Christ is practicing the presence of the transforming Christ.”

Russian troops surprised by Ukrainian robotic vacuums: A lesson in warfare, both physical and spiritual Aug 25, 2022
    Show notes

The war in Ukraine drags on into its sixth bloody month. Instead of a swift Russian victory as Putin expected, the conflict might continue for years. However, as Russian troops “liberate” Ukraine by shelling cities and occupying towns, the low-income Russian soldiers loot houses in suburban areas. Instead of finding a backward country in need of Russian rescue, they find the Ukrainians more well off than themselves. Click here for more information on the violent history between Ukraine and Russia.

    Show notes

President Biden announced yesterday that he would cancel $10,000 in student loan debt for Americans earning less than $125,000 per year or households earning less than $250,000. In The Daily Article for August 25, 2022, Dr. Jim Denison discusses the pros and cons of student loan forgiveness before turning to “our quest for self-advancement” and our need as Christians to lose our life for Jesus’ sake (Matthew 16:25).
