    Show notes

Rich Mitchell is a a certified Life Coach through The Life Coach School. He helps high achieving professionals overcome burnout so they can get fired up about their personal and professional lives. He is a Life Coach for single dads on a mission to help single dads level up to their fullest potential.

In this episode of the Dad Edge Podcast, Larry Hagner interviews Rich Mitchell who shares his personal experience with burnout and how it led to him losing his job. Rich Mitchell discusses the symptoms of burnout, including disengagement and distraction, and emphasizes the importance of addressing burnout to prevent others from going through the same struggles.

One of the ways Rich Mitchell describes his burnout is through his engagement in various distractions. He admits to looking at his phone during work and avoiding people he was supposed to work with. These actions demonstrate a lack of focus and disinterest in his job, which are common symptoms of burnout. Rich also mentions that he stopped focusing on improving his own craft and instead focused on helping others improve theirs as a school administrator. This shift in focus indicates a loss of passion and motivation for his own work.

As Rich Mitchell reflects on his career, he realizes that burnout has been a recurring theme for him. He shares an anecdote about being asked to include goals of becoming a building leader, principal, or superintendent in his goal sheet. However, he tells his supervisor that he is not interested in pursuing these positions, which he now recognizes as a sign that he was already feeling burnt out and not motivated to advance in his career.

Rich's experience highlights the impact of burnout on one's professional life. It can lead to disengagement, a lack of focus, and a loss of passion for one's work. However, amidst the burnout, Rich Mitchell also gained clarity about what he did not want in his career. He realized that he did not want to continue down a path that would lead to more stress and burnout. This clarity allowed him to make the decision to move on to a different career path, specifically life coaching.

Authoritarian vs. Authoritative Parenting with Yeadon Smith Oct 13, 2023
    Show notes

Yeadon Smith is the founder of "My First Million in Multifamily". Yeadon discerned that he was not called to the pastorate, and launched a career in real estate. Yeadon was one of the top producing real estate agents in his market while he was active in the residential transaction side of real estate.

In this episode, Larry Hanger interviews Yeadon Smith about his personal life, including his marriage and four children. They discuss the question of what leads to having four kids and the guest attributes it to having a hot wife. They also delve into the guest's unique childhood and the different experiences he had compared to others in their generation.

This episode reveals a shift in parenting style over time. They discuss their upbringing and how their parents' authoritarian and disciplinarian approach influenced their own initial parenting beliefs. They also acknowledge that this style was prevalent in the 80s and 90s, reflecting the cultural norms of that era.

However, as they grew older and became parents themselves, they realized that this approach was not effective or conducive to healthy parent-child relationships. They express frustration with the idea of demanding obedience from their children without allowing them to express themselves or be kids. Larry and Yeadon Smith recognize that their parents were simply following the parenting norms of their time and do not blame them for their upbringing.

This serves as a reminder that parenting styles are not fixed and can change over time. It highlights the importance of reflection, growth, and adaptability in raising children. Yeadon Smith's personal experiences and challenges provide valuable insights into the evolution of parenting styles and the need for a more open and inclusive approach.

How to Manage Tiny Humans with Big Emotions with Alyssa Campbell Oct 09, 2023
    Show notes

Alyssa Campbell is a teacher, parent, and an emotional development expert with a masters degree in early childhood education. She is also the author of the book "Tiny Humans, Big Emotions." In addition to her writing endeavors, Alyssa also runs a business and is a devoted mother to a two and a half-year-old. Her ethos revolves around the importance of building emotional intelligence in children. She believes in recognizing and regulating biases, looking beyond behavior for understanding, and fostering empathy in communication.

In this episode, Larry Hagner sits down with Alyssa Campbell. They discuss the challenges of balancing motherhood, running a business, and pursuing personal goals. Alyssa Campbell shares her excitement about expecting a baby girl and jokes about potentially having more children depending on their behavior. Larry relates by sharing his experience of having four boys and the reactions he receives from others.

Alyssa Campbell explains that she wrote a book called "Tiny Humans, Big Emotions" because she felt the need for more resources that focused on the adult's role in emotional intelligence. She found that many existing resources only provided strategies for dealing with children's behavior, without addressing the adult's own emotions and reactions.

Building emotional intelligence in kids requires parents to model and teach emotional regulation, empathy, and effective communication. It involves creating a safe and supportive environment where children feel comfortable expressing their emotions and learning healthy ways to manage them. Parents can also encourage their children to identify and label their emotions, validate their feelings, and help them develop problem-solving skills.

Recognizing and regulating our biases is a crucial aspect of building emotional intelligence in both children and adults. This episode sheds light on the biases that often go unnoticed and how they can impact our interactions with children.
