I Thought I Was Losing Him: Hope for Parents Raising Kids Through Narcissistic Abuse" May 24, 2026
    Show notes

Today my older son moved out. He is 26 years old. And as I watched him go, the last 26 years played through my mind — the good, the bad, and everything in between.

If you are a parent in a narcissistic relationship, you know the fear I am talking about. The one that sits in your chest and doesn't announce itself. The one that whispers — will my child be okay? I lived with that fear for years. I watched my son go through depression, isolation, and seasons so dark I genuinely wondered if I was losing him. In January of 2019, my worst fear almost came true.

In this episode, I am sharing what I learned from the hardest years of my life — the mistake I was making without realizing it, the conversation with a dear friend that changed everything, and two recent conversations with my son that I will carry with me forever.

If you are parenting through narcissistic abuse and wondering if any of it is getting through — this episode is for you.

What we cover: — The impact of narcissistic abuse on children and what they carry — The mistake well-meaning parents make that buries their child's pain deeper — Why safety, love, and time are the most powerful things you can give — What is actually possible on the other side — from a mom who has lived it.

If any of these topics resonate with you, this episode was made for you: narcissistic abuse, parenting through narcissism, children of narcissists, co-parenting with a narcissist, raising kids in a narcissistic home, covert narcissism, emotional abuse, hope and healing, narcissistic relationship recovery.

Covert Narcissist’s Emotional Dysregulation: How It Affects Your Marriage and Your Kids May 24, 2026
    Show notes

If you’re in a relationship with a covert narcissist, you already know something feels deeply wrong — but you may not have the words for it yet. One of the most destructive and least talked-about patterns in narcissistic abuse is emotional dysregulation. And when a covert narcissist can’t manage their own emotions, the entire family pays the price.

In this episode of the Covert Narcissism Podcast, we break down exactly how a covert narcissist’s emotional dysregulation affects your marriage and your kids — and why the damage runs so much deeper than most people realize.

We talk about what emotional dysregulation really looks like in a covert narcissist — because it’s rarely what you’d expect. We dig into the toll it takes on you as a spouse: the hypervigilance, the walking on eggshells, the self-doubt, and the relentless mental exhaustion that comes from a mind that is never allowed to rest. We also talk about what happens to your children when they grow up inside this family dynamic — and the quiet, lasting ways narcissistic abuse shapes the way they see themselves and the world.

If you’ve been running on empty and can’t figure out why, this episode will help you understand exactly where your energy is going — and why narcissistic abuse recovery requires more than just awareness.

    Topics covered:

    • What covert narcissist emotional dysregulation actually looks like
    • How narcissistic abuse creates hypervigilance in the spouse
    • Why you’ve lost your autopilot — and what that costs you every day
    • The overthinking drain: why your brain never stops and never resolves
    • How children of narcissists silently adapt in unhealthy ways
    • Why the whole family system reorganizes around one person’s emotional fragility
    • Why narcissistic abuse recovery requires support, not just information

The Cult of Two: How Covert Narcissists Use Mind Control in Relationships with Rachel Bernstein LMFT May 14, 2026
    Show notes

What if the most controlling relationship you've ever heard of isn't happening in a compound somewhere, but behind closed doors in an ordinary home?

In this episode, Renee sits down with Rachel Bernstein, one of the country's leading cult interventionists and a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist with over 30 years of experience. Together they unpack one of the most eye-opening parallels in psychology: the stunning overlap between cult tactics and covert narcissistic relationships.

If you've ever felt like you needed permission to exist in your own relationship — this episode will explain why.

    In this conversation, you'll discover:

    - Why a marriage or partnership can function as a "cult of two"

    - How covert narcissists use the same mind control techniques as cult leaders

    - Why intermittent gratification is just as addictive as gambling — and keeps you trapped

    - Why leaving feels like abandonment — and why that feeling is by design

    - How to start trusting your own inner voice again after years of gaslighting

Rachel has worked with the Department of Justice, appeared in the Starz documentary Seduced: Inside the NXIVM Cult and Netflix series Unwell and How to Become a Cult Leader, and has likely spoken with more cult survivors than anyone in the history of her field.

This is one of those conversations that makes everything suddenly make sense.

What If They Aren't a Covert Narcissist — Now What May 10, 2026
    Show notes

One of the most paralyzing questions I hear from people in these relationships is not "how do I leave?" It is this: What if I'm wrong?

What if they aren't actually a covert narcissist? What if you walk away from someone who genuinely loves you — and you were misreading everything all along?

In this episode, we sit with that question honestly. Because you deserve more than just reassurance. You deserve to actually think this through.

    We talk about:

    • Why the "what if I'm wrong" fear has so much power over you — and why that is not a coincidence
    • Why you do not need a diagnosis to validate your pain or to make a decision about your life
    • How good people can still be bad partners — and what that actually looks like in real relationships
    • The four questions to ask yourself when you are stuck in self-doubt
    • Why losing the ability to trust yourself is one of the deepest wounds of covert narcissistic abuse
    • The most important question you may have never asked yourself: What if I'm right?

If you have spent months or years wondering whether what you are experiencing is real — this episode is for you.

    Show notes

Why is it so hard to move on after covert narcissistic abuse? Why can betrayal trauma continue affecting you years—or even decades—later?

In this powerful conversation, Renee Swanson sits down with betrayal trauma expert Dr. Debi Silber to explore the deep emotional, physical, and psychological impact of betrayal in covert narcissistic relationships.

Dr. Debi explains why betrayal is a unique form of trauma, how Post Betrayal Syndrome affects survivors, and why healing from covert narcissistic abuse requires more than simply “moving on.” Together, Renee and Dr. Debi discuss the loss of trust, the breakdown of self, nervous system dysregulation, chronic symptoms, emotional triggers, and the patterns that keep survivors stuck for years.

They also dive into the five stages of betrayal recovery and what true transformation looks like after emotional abuse.

If you’ve struggled with self-doubt, rumination, hypervigilance, inability to trust, emotional exhaustion, or feeling like you lost yourself in a covert narcissistic relationship, this episode will help you understand why—and what healing can actually look like.

    In this episode:

    • Betrayal trauma and covert narcissistic abuse
    • Why you can’t “just move on”
    • Post Betrayal Syndrome symptoms
    • The connection between betrayal trauma and the nervous system

Why You Can't Stop Thinking About Your Narcissist: What Your Rumination Is Really Chasing May 03, 2026
    Show notes

If you've ever lain awake at 2am replaying conversations with your narcissistic partner or ex — rehearsing the perfect response, asking yourself why you can't just let it go — this episode is for you.

Rumination after narcissistic abuse is one of the most common and most misunderstood experiences in covert narcissist recovery. It feels compulsive. It feels impossible to stop. And most people in narcissistic relationships believe it means something is wrong with them.

It doesn't. And in this episode, Renee Swanson — certified life coach, survivor of 21 years of covert narcissistic abuse, and host of the Covert Narcissism Podcast — breaks down exactly what is happening in your mind, why it won't stop, and what your rumination is actually chasing beneath the surface.

What you will learn in this episode:

    • Why rumination after narcissistic abuse is not a sign of weakness — it is your mind's trauma response doing exactly what it was designed to do
    • The three-layer framework for understanding why your thought loops are so relentless and so hard to break
    • What intermittent reinforcement is and why covert narcissistic relationships condition your nervous system like a slot machine
    • The feeling beneath the loop — what your rumination is really chasing, and why you've been looking for it in the wrong place
    • Why understanding the thought loop alone is not enough to stop it — and what actually creates lasting change
    • Two practical tools to use immediately — one for deep reflection and one for the moment the spiral starts
If this episode resonated with you and you're ready to go deeper than understanding — if you're ready to have real support in applying what you know and moving forward — Renee invites you to explore coaching at www.covertnarcissism.com

Coaching is not about learning more. It is about having the support to finally apply what you already know and begin moving forward. Your story matters, and you deserve to be heard without judgment.

    Show notes

Have you ever felt like something was wrong in your relationship but couldn't find the words to describe it? In this episode of the Covert Narcissism Podcast Community Chat, I sit down with David, who spent 17 years married to a covert narcissist before finally being able to name what he was experiencing.

We talk about why covert narcissistic abuse is so hard to explain to others, what it feels like when you aren't fully believed, and how saying it out loud is often the moment the healing begins.

If you are struggling to name what you are experiencing in your relationship, feel like no one around you truly understands, or are navigating co-parenting after narcissistic abuse, this episode is for you.

They Never Cheated, But You Still Feel Worthless: The Self-Righteous Narcissist Explained Apr 26, 2026
    Show notes

Have you ever been in a relationship with someone who never cheated, never raged, never drank — someone everyone around you thought was wonderful — and yet you constantly felt like you were the problem? Like you could never measure up, never quite get it right, never escape the quiet but crushing weight of their disappointment?

That's not your imagination. And it's not your fault.

In this episode of the Covert Narcissism Podcast, Renee breaks down one of the most misunderstood and hardest-to-identify forms of covert narcissism: the self-righteous narcissist. This is the narcissist who gains their supply not from attention or admiration — but from their own sense of moral superiority. They would never cheat. They would never lie. And they will make absolutely sure you know it.

    In this episode, you'll learn:

    • What narcissistic supply actually is — and why morality can be a form of it
    • How the self-righteous narcissist uses a "moral scoreboard" to keep you in a one-down position
    • The specific phrases they use that sound reasonable but function as control
    • Why this type of abuse is so hard to identify — and why victims almost always end up blaming themselves
    • The long-term impact on your sense of self, your confidence, and your own moral compass
    • What healing looks like — and how to start reclaiming who you actually are

Whether you grew up with a self-righteous parent, are in a relationship with a self-righteous partner, or are just beginning to connect the dots on why you always felt like the problem — this episode will give you language for something you've felt but never been able to name.

You were never the problem. And the scoreboard was never fair.

If you're ready to stop untangling this alone, Renee's coaching program is open. Visit covertnarcissism.com to learn more.
