    ABOUT OUR GUESTS Dr. Lindsay Starkey was raised on a cattle farm in Northeast Kansas and earned her BS (2007) in Animal Science from the University of Arkansas. She completed both her DVM (2011) and PhD (2015) in Veterinary Biomedical Sciences at Oklahoma State University where her graduate research focused on several vector-borne infections of dogs. She is a diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Microbiology, Parasitology sub-specialty, completing her residency training through the National Center for Veterinary Parasitology at Oklahoma State University in 2015. Dr. Starkey joined the faculty at Auburn University in May 2016 where she is involved in various research projects involving vector-borne and food-borne infections, diagnostic parasitology, and parasite consultation and outreach. Dr. Starkey also is heavily involved in the teaching of parasitology to first, second, and fourth-year veterinary students, and she has received two teaching awards while at Auburn, most recently being awarded the Zoetis Distinguished Teacher Award in March 2020. Dr. Brian Herrin is an assistant professor at the Kansas State University College of Veterinary Medicine. He graduated from Oklahoma State University for both his DVM and PhD. His current research focus is on the control of ticks and fleas on companion animals. Some of his recent interests are on surveillance of ticks and tick-borne diseases of horses and the surveillance of Spotted Fever Group Rickettsia in the US. Although his research focus is on ticks, Dr. Herrin enjoys working with all parasites of veterinary importance through the diagnostic service and teaching/outreach opportunities. ABOUT THE HOST Dr. Andy Roark is a practicing veterinarian, international speaker, author, and media personality. He is the founder of the Uncharted Veterinary Conference and DrAndyRoark.com. He has been an award-winning columnist for DVM360 and his popular Facebook page, website, podcast and YouTube show reach millions of people every month. Dr. Roark has received the NAVC Practice Management Speaker of the Year Award three times, the WVC Practice Management Educator of the Year Award, the Outstanding Young Alumni Award from the University of Florida’s College of Veterinary Medicine, and the Veterinarian of the Year Award from the South Carolina Association of Veterinarians. Tasha obtained her CVPP (certified veterinary pain practitioner) designation in 2013 and became a veterinary technician specialist in anesthesia in 2015. Tasha has been a featured speaker on various anesthesia and pain management topics at several international veterinary conferences. Tasha is the author of many articles and blogs on anesthesia and pain management related topics. In 2013 Tasha created the Facebook group Veterinary Anesthesia Nerds, which has over 50,000 members taking part in education and exchange of ideas from all over the world! Tasha is crazy and bought a 1920's fixer upper and is now obsessed with home improvement tutorials on YouTube. She lives in Philadelphia with her husband, son, one perfect cat, and one jerk cat.     ABOUT OUR GUEST: Dr. Michael Blackwell, like his father, earned a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from Tuskegee University. He also earned a Master of Public Health degree from Loma Linda University. He currently serves as the Director of the Program for Pet Health Equity, University of Tennessee. His mission is to improve access to veterinary care for underserved families. Dr. Blackwell previously served as: Dean, College of Veterinary Medicine, University of Tennessee, Chief of Staff, Office of the Surgeon General of the United States, Deputy Director, Center for Veterinary Medicine, Food and Drug Administration, and Chief Veterinary Officer, U.S. Public Health Service. During 23 years on active duty, he achieved the rank of Assistant Surgeon General (Rear Admiral) of the U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned Corps. His awards include the Distinguished Service Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal, and two Surgeon General’s Exemplary Service Medals.

After completing a bachelor’s degree with majors in English Literature and Biology at the University ofCalifornia at Santa Cruz, he obtained a Master’s in Physiology and AnimalBehavior and worked for several years in environmental and behavioral enrichment for captive primates. Dr. McKenzie then attended the School of VeterinaryMedicine at the University of Pennsylvania and began working as a small animal general practice veterinarian. In addition to his clinical work, he has served as President of the Evidence-Based Veterinary Medicine Association, lectured on evidence-based medicine at numerous veterinary conferences, and published journal articles on such topics as overdiagnosis, cognitive bias in veterinary clinical decision-making, and the philosophical underpinnings of evidence-based and alternative medicine. Since 2009, Dr. McKenzie has managed the SkeptVet Blog and associated social media outlets, including a series of science-based pet health videos on YouTube. He has also been an occasional contributor to the popular Science-based Medicine blog. While working as a practitioner, speaking, handwriting, Dr. McKenzie has continued to pursue post-graduate training, and in2015 he completed his MSc in Epidemiology at the London School of Hygiene and TropicalMedicine in 2015.
