Ep. 209: Chris Hedges Explains How America is a Diseased Society and Donald Trump is the Symptom Oct 23, 2018
    Show notes

Chris Hedges is the author of the new book America: The Farewell Tour.

He is also the author of numerous award winning books including Empire of Illusion: The End of Literacy and the Triumph of Spectacle, Death of a Liberal Class, War Is a Force That Gives Us Meaning, American Fascists: The Christian Right and the War on America, and Days of Destruction, Days of Revolt.

Chris Hedges and Chauncey discuss how America is a deeply sick and pathological society, why Donald Trump is the symptom and not the cause of this disease, and the role of celebrity culture and consumerism in the downfall of American democracy.

Chris Hedges and Chauncey also reflect on the need for a more advanced and sophisticated understanding of how race and class relate to one another and the perils of empty symbolic politics such as the so-called "Women's March". Chris Hedges also explains why peoples resistance movements such as Standing Rock and the Ferguson Uprising are the real way forward if American democracy and a humane and free society are to finally be created and salvaged in the country.

During this week's podcast Chauncey asks, "What year is it?" when New Age Jim Crow Enforcers are keeping black folks from voting in Georgia, Jewish-Americans and others are being made into second class citizens by Christian fascists with the support of the Trump regime, and the fascist bigot Donald Trump tells transgender people that their personhood is "illegal" and their identities do not exist under American law.

On this week's show Chauncey also celebrates Jeremiah Harvey, a 9-year-old black child, who refused to forgive a white racist woman who claimed he groped her.

Ep. 208: Max Boot Explains Why the Republican Party Needs to be Burned to the Ground Oct 16, 2018
    Show notes

Max Boot is the author of numerous bestselling books including The Road Not Taken: Edward Lansdale and the American Tragedy in Vietnam, The Savage Wars of Peace: Small Wars and the Rise of American Power, War Made New: Technology, Warfare, and the Course of History, 1500 to Today and Invisible Armies: The Epic History of Guerrilla Warfare from Ancient Times to the Present. His newest book is entitled The Corrosion of Conservatism: Why I Left the Right. In addition, he is the Jeane J. Kirkpatrick Senior Fellow in National Security Studies at the Council on Foreign Relations and a contributor to the Washington Post and CNN.

Dr. Boot and Chauncey discuss the "Never Trump" movement and why so many "traditional" and "principled" conservatives continue to support a dangerous and radically deranged and authoritarian Donald Trump and Republican Party. Dr. Boot also explains why it took him so long to acknowledge and confront his own Republican Party's long history of racism, bigotry and other authoritarian tendencies.

Dr. Boot and Chauncey also ponder if the Republican Party in its present form can ever be salvaged or should it instead be burned down to the ground. And Dr. Boot offers his thoughts on if Donald Trump is a traitor who has committed treason.

During this week's podcast Chauncey reviews another sick week in Donald Trump's American dystopia where 5-year-old children are forced to sign court documents surrendering their rights, the Republican Party keeps black and brown and young people from voting across the country in order to steal elections, and how Trump's ICE Border Immigration thugs have been robbing, raping, kidnapping, and murdering people.

Chauncey also "connects the dots" about why Donald Trump's USA Today op-ed was not really about "healthcare" but instead was another threat and encouragement of violence by the Great Leader against the Democratic Party and anyone who opposes Trump's movement.

At the end of this week's podcast Chauncey shares a story about a wonderful human animal friend hero who saved lives during Hurricane Michael.

Ep. 207: Anthony Bourdain's Dear Friend Joel Rose Reflects on His Passing, Life, and Their Final Project "Hungry Ghosts" Oct 08, 2018
    Show notes

Joel Rose is the author of such acclaimed novels as Kill, Kill, Faster, Faster and The Blackest Bird. He is also a dear and close friend of the late, great and very much missed Anthony Bourdain. Their friendship was also a creative partnership. Together they co-wrote The New York Times bestselling graphic novel Jiro Dreams of Sushi and its prequel Get Jiro! Blood and Sushi. Joel and Anthony's final project together is the new graphic novel Hungry Ghosts.

Joel and Chauncey reflect on Anthony Bourdain's life and why he is so beloved by legions of fans around the world. Joel also explains Bourdain's life philosophy, how they met and became such close friends, Bourdain's strength through vulnerability and what they learned from each other.

Joel and Chauncey also bond over their shared working class origins and present, appreciating their fathers' wisdom and examples, as well as navigating through financial insecurities and fears.

During this week's podcast Chauncey explains, again, why it was no surprise that Brett Kavanaugh and the Republicans were able to win the Supreme Court and con and intimidate the Democrats and so many others in the news media and among the public.

Chauncey also cuts a promo on cowardly and weak Democrats such as Cory Booker and other people who actually believe that we should love Donald Trump's voters and other Republicans because they are our "fellow Americans".

At the end of this week's podcast Chauncey shares a very important essay from The New Yorker which details in precise terms how Donald Trump is a political magician and illusionist.

Ep. 205: Psychiatrist Bandy Lee Warns That Donald Trump is Delusional and Living in His Own Reality Sep 23, 2018
    Show notes

Bandy Lee is a professor at the Yale School of Medicine and one of the principle editors of the New York Times bestseller The Dangerous Case of Donald Trump: 27 Psychiatrists and Mental Health Experts Assess a President.

On this week's show, Dr. Lee and Chauncey discuss how Donald Trump's mental health continues to worsen, how insiders from the White House reached out to her last year--well before the recent New York Times anonymous op-ed--with concerns and fears about the president, and how authoritarianism is a type of collective mental illness. Dr. Lee continues to sound the alarm about how Donald Trump is a very dangerous person, who because of his mental health issues, may start a nuclear war.

And Dr. Lee explains how Trump and his followers are stuck in a relationship based upon collective narcissism--and how this shared pathology has led to violence--which will only continue to worsen.

During this week's podcast Chauncey discusses Brett Kavanaugh and toxic white (predatory) masculinity and how such behavior is encouraged among elite white men in America. Chauncey also explains the role of classism in the excuses being made for elite white men like Brett Kavanaugh by Republicans, conservatives, and his other defenders.

Carl also shares how the 1980s crack baby myth came into existence and the way that movies such as New Jack City fueled the War on Drugs and its many lies about "urban crime".

Ep. 203: How Search Engines Like Google and Other Algorithms Reproduce Social Inequality Sep 10, 2018
    Show notes

Safiya Noble is the guest on this week's edition of The Chauncey DeVega Show. She is a professor at the University of Southern California (USC) Annenberg School of Communication and the author of the new book Algorithms of Oppression: How Search Engines Reinforce Racism.

On this week's show, Safiya and Chauncey discuss how algorithms such as Google as well as "artificial intelligence" are actually making social inequality worse in America and around the world, the misplaced faith in such technologies, their threat to democracy, and why so many people use social media and other types of digital distractions to find meaning in their otherwise lonely and unfulfilled lives in an age of economic precarity.

During this week's podcast Chauncey reflects on The New York Times op-ed from an anonymous Trump senior staff member and how psychiatrist Bandy Lee shared with him, first, how she was contacted last year about Trump's apparently failing mental health.

Chauncey is also upset that MSNBC did not mention his name, again, and also blurred out his name when talking about Dr. Lee's conversation with people at the White House regarding Donald Trump's mental health.

Dr. David Reiss, who is one of the contributors to the bestselling book The Dangerous Case of Donald Trump, also stops by the virtual bar and salon this week to explain why Donald Trump is so mentally unwell that he would likely not qualify to be a police officer--never mind having the authority to order the destruction of the world with nuclear weapons.

At the end of this week's podcast, Chauncey shares a warning from history--this time from a Holocaust survivor who also fought the Nazis in the Warsaw ghetto--about the perils America and the world are experiencing because of the rise of Trumpism and other right-wing authoritarian movements around the world.

Anti-racism activist, author, and scholar Tim Wise is the guest on this week's edition of The Chauncey DeVega Show. Tim Wise is the author of numerous books including his most recent Under the Affluence: Shaming the Poor, Praising the Rich and Sacrificing the Future of America. On this week's show, Tim and Chauncey discuss Donald Trump's obsessions with "white genocide" in South Africa, the true meaning of "White Identity Politics" and its relationship to Whiteness, if racists and other bigots should be shamed in public via social media such as Twitter and Facebook, and white racial paranoia about the so-called "browning of America". During this week's podcast Chauncey reviews, how again, another white supremacist--this time one who is associated with some of the country and world's most prominent neo Nazis--has been discovered writing public policy in Trump's White House.

Ep. 201: Bryan Edward Hill on Writing Batman, Black Lightning, and How to Live One's Own Best Life Philosophy Aug 27, 2018
    Show notes

Bryan Edward Hill is the guest on this week's episode of The Chauncey DeVega Show.

He is the writer of such comic books as the Batman Detective Comics series and also Michael Cray. His newest project is American Carnage which is forthcoming from Vertigo. In addition to writing comic books Bryan is also a TV writer whose credits include Ash vs. The Evil Dead.

On this week's show, Bryan and Chauncey discuss how being working class black folks impacted their life trajectories, questions of "representation" and opportunity in the business that is popular culture, and the art of storytelling.

Bryan also shares some great stories about being attacked by one of the Wu-Tang Clan's hangers-on, living one's best life philosophy and principles, traveling around the world, and combating self-sabotage and impostor syndrome.

And during this week's podcast Chauncey explains how Donald Trump's "white genocide" victimology narrative proves that he is, again, a white supremacist Santa Claus. Chauncey also refuses to offer a hagiography for the now late and departed Senator John McCain. Chauncey also ponders why the Catholic Church is not considered an ongoing criminal enterprise whose leaders should be in prison for protecting sick, monstrous, sexual predators who abuse children.

Ep. 200-2: Joe Feagin on Liberal White Racism and "Colorblind" America Aug 21, 2018
    Show notes

Joe Feagin is the guest on this week's episode of The Chauncey DeVega Show. This is part two of our conversation which began on last week's very special 200th show. He is a distinguished professor of sociology at Texas A&M University and one of the leading scholars of race and social inequality in the world. Professor Feagin has written dozens of books including The White Racial Frame:Centuries of Racial Framing and Counter-Framing, Racist America, and How Blacks Built America.

Professor Feagin and Chauncey discuss "liberal racism", the so-called "browning of America", how the language developed by social scientists and others to describe racism and white supremacy is inadequate, and white racial logic and social change. Professor Feagin also shares his hopes and fears about America's future and the long view of the country's history. Chauncey also shares a story--that is more proof--of how white supremacists have infested Trump's White House. In this week's special part 2 of the 200th episode of The Chauncey DeVega Show, Mama DeVega makes her triumphant return. She is angry at the local Chinese restaurant, is combating Trump fiends at the gym, and explains that she wouldn't be nice to white bigots with the hope of changing their minds about racism like Daryl Davis does. Mama DeVega also shares a story about seeing the great late Aretha Franklin in concert. And at the end of this week's show Chauncey explains the real reason that Trump is stripping his enemies of their security clearances, calls out ICE thugs who waylay pregnant women and their partners, and has a good time discussing how a white man in Florida was caught on video complaining that the police were "treating him like a black man".

In honor of the 200th episode of The Chauncey DeVega Show, Chauncey also shares one of his favorite things as an "Easter egg" at the end of this week's podcast.
