Elevating Humanity Through Business with John Mackey Jan 13, 2021
    Show notes

You all know my mission for this show is to help you live your dreams through career, hobby and life and that's why I'm excited to have John Mackey on the show. He is the cofounder and CEO of Whole Foods Market and cofounder of the nonprofit Conscious Capitalism. He is the coauthor of the Conscious Capitalism book, and most recently Conscious Leadership, Elevating Humanity through Business.

You may recall in the past, that Whole Foods was acquired by Amazon for 13.7 billion dollars. But this episode isn't about money or acquisitions. It's about how to connect, inspire, and look within for the things that actually matter to you. It's about how you go to work every day with purpose and conviction around a passion or a way of being of what you want to see more in the world.

Of course we re-trace John's past, from founding Whole Foods from one of the first organic grocery stores to arrive on the scene to a Fortune 500 company with something like 500 stores, almost 90,000 team members, across 3 countries. Yet what we really get into is the pursuit of your one precious life plus:

    • Leading with love.
    • Acting with integrity
    • Finding Win Win Win solutions in every challenge
    • and so much more

    Enjoy!

12 Secrets for Unlocking Your Most Creative Work Jan 11, 2021
    Show notes

A lot of my breakthrough creative thoughts come to me when least expected. I've also learned from an entire life in the trenches as an artist what DOESN'T contribute to them (abusing myself, bad head space, partying too much), but more importantly, what does.

I've learned that creative inspiration is something that can be directly CULTIVATED by putting yourself in a fertile environment. In today's episode, I share my personal recipe to tapping into the creative plutonium that fuels our most creative work.

Rich Roll has been named on of the "25 Fittest Men in the World" by Men's Fitness and "The Guru of Reinvention" by Outside. While he's renowned as an ultra-athlete, wellness advocate and bestselling author, he's also the podcast host of one of the top 100 podcasts in the world, the Rich Roll Podcast.

Rich and I have sat down for a few conversations either on this podcast or his, and it's some of my favorite conversations. Of course it's always fun to jive with someone you have a lot in common with but there are also some beautiful differences that leaves so much to explore.

Today in the podcast we're talking about one of my favorite topics, learning from others. In our conversation we traverse ideas around growth, transformation, empowerment and working toward dreams with so many pearls of timeless wisdom Rich has distilled from his over 500 guests on his show into his gorgeous new book called Voicing Change.

Cannot wait for you to get into the episode, enjoy!

When Preparation Meets Opportunity with Paul Ninson Dec 30, 2020
    Show notes

One of my favorite things about the community we have around this show is the ongoing conversation not just between my guests, but with you, the listener. Whether it's through my email newsletter, social media, or texting, the community we've built over 10+ years is real. This year, many of you asked for guests who are on their way up. Folks who have put what they've learned into action. Well, I could not think of a better show to bring in the New Year with one such guest, Paul Ninson.

Paul is a documentary photographer and aspiring Cinematographer, born in Kumasi, Ghana. He's also a long time listener of the show. Having discovered this podcast and CreativeLive as a curious and budding photographer, Paul decided to sell his phone to buy his first camera. That was just three years ago. His path from then to now is incredibly inspirational, including a chance meeting of Brandon Stanton of Humans of New York in Ghana, connecting with yours truly, and eventually making his way to his dream school at the International Center of Photography in New York where he was awarded the Director's Fellowship and George Moss Merit Scholarship.

To date, Paul's work has been featured in the World Photography Organization, and exhibited at the British Council. He was one for the official state photographers for the HRH The Prince of Wales and the HRH The Duchess of Cornwall's visit to Ghana. He has worked for various NGOs and organizations including Discovery Learning Alliance, Ark Foundation, United Nations, and many many more.

Very excited for you to hear Paul's story and I hope you get a chance to view his work. You can find him at @pninson on instagram or paulninson.com.

    Enjoy + Happy New Year!

Overcome Creative Obstacles Dec 28, 2020
    Show notes

One of the most popular questions I get is how to overcome the creative obstacles that are in the world. Whether they are out there, or within us, we've told ourselves a bunch of stories of why we can't create. I thought it would be very helpful, based on listener requests, to do an episode on creative obstacles.

When you're feeling stuck, recognize you're not waiting to be able to create, you're waiting to FEEL LIKE creating. That's a very different thing. The trap is that we often don't feel like creating until we're well under way. If you wait for the feeling to come before you start, you're going to be sitting there waiting.

So when I look to figure out what is actually blocking me from creating, I think about these three things: * Am I waiting for someday or that perfect moment? how can I start now? what's one thing I can do to move me forward? * Where is my time going? How can I structure my time such that realign schedule with my ambitions and values * How can I work in microbursts and reset my expectations on what I can create in a given moment.

Ready to start moving forward? I'll see you over in the episode.

    Enjoy!

The Art of Practice with Christoph Niemann Dec 23, 2020
    Show notes

My guest today is the one and only, the inimitable, Christoph Niemann. If you're not familiar with his work, he's an amazing illustrator, artist, author and animator. I became familiar with his work from the covers of The New Yorker, National Geographic, and New York Times Magazine. Christoph's art has been subject to numerous museum retrospectives. And you might have seen him on the Netflix show Abstract where they did a 45 minute documentary on him that is just spectacular.

Christoph has drawn live from the Venice Art Biennale, the Olympic Games in London, and he has sketched the New York City Marathon — while actually running it. He created The New Yorker's first Augmented Reality Cover as well as a hand drawn 360 degree VR animation for the magazine's US Open issue. Clients include Hermés, Google, LAMY, and The Museum of Modern Art. Suffice it to say, he is a legend.

In this conversation get get into:

    • how all the struggles we go through as creatives is so similar there is real power and support in sharing the solutions in our communities
    • how to not be intimidated by trends and how to manage social media as a test ground but not getting attached to how many likes we get
    • how being our harshest critic is required to making our best work
    • and so much more.

    Enjoy!

Courage, Creativity and The Power of Change with Beth Comstock Dec 21, 2020
    Show notes

As we come into the New Year, it's often a time of reflection and looking forward. Thinking about the things we want to change and recommit to goals.

Whether you have big audacious goals or just want to do something seemingly small, these things take a huge amount of courage and creativity.

Which leads us to today's episode with Beth Comstock. Beth Comstock's mission is to understand what's next, navigate change and help others do the same. By cultivating a habit of seeking out new ideas, people and places, she built a career path from storyteller to chief marketer to corporate Vice Chair.

Beth spent nearly three decades at GE until December 2017. As Vice Chair of Business Innovation and previously Chief Marketing Officer, she led efforts to accelerate new growth, develop digital and clean-energy futures, seed new businesses and enhance brand value. As President of Integrated Media at NBC Universal, Beth oversaw TV ad revenue and new digital efforts, including the early development of hulu.com.

Beth came to studio not too long ago to teach a class at CreativeLive on this exact topic, and I wanted to share a few of my favorite lessons that helps us:

    1. Become a changemaker by leading with imagination.

    2. Gain the courage to develop and defend new creative ideas.

    3. Unearth new ideas but apply strategy to bring them to fruition.

    4. Make room for discovery and how to apply storytelling concepts to make your vision into reality.

Remember, the world will never be slower than it is right now. So it's never a better time to ignite your ideas into reality.

    Enjoy!

Justin Boreta: Starve The Ego, Feed the Soul Dec 16, 2020
    Show notes

Today's conversation is with a rock star, my friend, and super ultra-stellar human Justin Boreta.

Many music fans know Justin Boreta as a member of The Glitch Mob, a beat-driven electronic group that has been touring for more than a decade. Since their establishment in 2006, the electronic live act has now performed around the world at festivals including: Coachella, Burning Man, Lollapolooza, Reading & Leeds and Bonnaroo.

The Glitch Mob have released three albums together as well as official remixes for Daft Punk, The Prodigy, Odesza, Metallica, and TV on the Radio and more. Justin's also had some pretty badass collaborations, including with the spiritual teacher Ram Dass and Alan Watts on guided meditations.

Our conversation explores so many of our favorite themes including: mindset, creativity, mindfulness, awareness, how to pay attention, how to work through fear, trauma, and how the things that make you weird are potentially your biggest strengths.

Can't wait for you to jump in. Enjoy!

Matthew McConaughey on Embracing Resistance & Catching Greenlights Dec 09, 2020
    Show notes

You likely know my guest today from his roles in films such as Dazed and Confused, Dallas Buyer's Club, How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, Lincoln Lawyer, and so many great films. What you might not know about Academy Award-winning actor Matthew McConaughey over the last 35 years, he's been journaling his life experience, the wild stories and situations he found himself in.

Recently he worked up the courage to sit down with those diaries and what he found was a tome of life lessons on successes and failures, joys and sorrows, things that make us marvel or laugh out loud. The things that make us stress less, how to hurt less, how to find meaning in life, and how to be more ourselves.

In our conversation, we of course talk about his new best-selling book Greenlights, we get into:

    • Growing intuition into craft
    • Finding a space to discover yourself and sort through what really matters in life
    • The 'just keep living' philosophy of making life-affirming choices and being a little bit better every day
    • Plus many fun stories about working on sets, preparing for roles, and working with Jared Leto
