A former Miss World, she made her movie debut in 2002 and has appeared in more than sixty films produced in India and the United States. Love getting these questions from the community. If you have any questions or topics you'd like to suggest for a future episode, hit me up on social @chasejarvis or you can text me 206.309.5177.

Samantha Power on The Power of Idealism Feb 10, 2021
    Show notes

Samantha Power started as an outsider, a war correspondent who wrote impassioned pieces for the Washington Post, Economist, and others about the failings of the American government on an international stage. That voice led to her Pulitzer Prize winning book "A Problem from Hell": America and the Age of Genocide and earned her a job in the cabinet of President Barack Obama helping to shape the very policies she was once a harsh critic of.

Samantha has served both on the National Security Council and as an Ambassador to the UN. Most recently she was nominated as USAID Administrator. She is also the author of the New York Times bestsellers Chasing the Flame: One Man's Fight to Save the World and The Education of an Idealist: A Memoir, which is now in paperback and was named one of the best books of 2019 by the New York Times, Washington Post, Economist, Vanity Fair, National Public Radio, and TIME.

What I love about Samantha's story and her wisdom from navigating the halls of power, is her winding path to get there. In this episode, we get into:

    • How being an outsider, starting something new, or feeling like an imposter can help us to deconstruct the world around us
    • How being mission driven can help focus and motivate your work
    • The importance of setting modest goals instead of seemingly intangible ones. World changing happens in the smallest bites.
    • The X test: Using "if all I get from doing X, will it be worth it?"
    • and so much more

    Enjoy!

You Are Not Your Art Feb 08, 2021
    Show notes

Creative lives and creative careers are each designed. They happen intentionally. The so-called lucky ones, the people who live wildly creative lives or are paid to do what they love, built what they have deliberately and strategically. They created a vision and worked toward achieving it. Every one of them started exactly where you are now—or even farther back. It's time to put your work boots on and start kicking some ass.

Extreme Explorer Mike Horn on Pushing the Limits Feb 03, 2021
    Show notes

Today on the show I have a dear friend and arguably the foremost living Explorer on the planet: Mike Horn. I have had the incredible fortune of traveling to some really amazing places with Mike such as the South China sea around South Africa and the Amazon off the coast of Brazil. Some of my most inspiring and best moments of my life have been tagging along with Mike on his adventures.

Mike is also one of the hardest working, stubborn bad-ass is that I know. He's explored the Peruvian Andes with a raft and a paraglide, crossed South America solo over 6-months, swam down the Amazon River in a hydrospeed, circumnavigated the Earth along the equator for more than 40,000 kilometers unmotorized by boat, bike, and on foot. He's faced extreme temperatures crossing the North pole during winter and climbed many of the world's highest peaks such as Gasherbrum I and II, Broad Peak, Makalu; all without oxygen. Among his many adventures, Mike also works to share his knowledge, passion and experience with others through his youth mentorship programs, coaching, and media.

In this episode we get into:

    • how to inspire and motivate yourself
    • how to dream big and the one thing we need to achieve big things in the midst of hardship
    • how to persevere through what others might think is impossible
    • the changes Mike has seen in our planet as he's circumnavigated it almost 30 times
    • and so much more

Today on the show we have the Father of Biohacking himself, Dave Asprey. Over twenty-five years ago, Dave found himself overweight, overworked, and an unhealthy entrepreneur in Silicon Valley. There is an unavoidable hump along any creative path, a big, steep, muddy hill to climb between the exciting start and the point where you've become a proficient creator. You're going to hit rough patches. There's no thinking your way over this hump. Once you get to it, the time for planning is at an end. Only action will suffice.

Emmanuel Acho on Uncomfortable Conversations Jan 20, 2021
    Show notes

In the wake of George Floyd's murder in 2020, Emmanuel Acho recognized that Black and White people simply do not understand each other in America and he wanted to use his voice to do something about it. So he launched a video series, Uncomfortable Conversations with a Black Man. His goal? Open a dialog on topics we've been afraid to talk about: racism, privilege, cultural appropriation, and more. That show exploded with over 70 millions views, widespread media coverage, and led to his must-read NYT best-selling book by the same name.

Emmanuel studied sports management and was drafted into the NFL while earning his masters in Sports Psychology in the off-season. Not long after retiring from the NFL, Emmanuel started his broadcasting career at ESPN where he was the youngest national football analyst, and named a 2018 Forbes Under 30 selection.

In this episode we get into:

    • Emmanuel's upbringing from growing up as a first generation American to Nigerian immigrant parents, to attending an all white affluent grade school, to his career as a pro NFL football player to today.
    • How to start with what you have
    • Building and developing an idea through exploration
    • How conversation leads to understanding, and understanding can break down barriers between cultural differences
    • Insights from his conversations so far, including answers to tough questions that stuck with him

Design Systems That Fuel You with Srinivas Rao Jan 18, 2021
    Show notes

Whether you know it or not, there are a whole host of things that either stimulate or obstruct our productivity and creativity. Where we work, the people we see, the equipment we use, the sounds we hear, even the information we consume. The good news is that we can develop systems that can help us harness and fuel our creativity instead of diminish it.

Today on the show, I'm sharing a few of my favorite lessons from a recent class by Srinivas Rao that helps us to look at how our environments are either helping or hurting our creativity. Srini is the bestselling author of The Art of Being Unmistakable and An Audience of One: Reclaiming Creativity for Its Own Sake. His work has been featured in Forbes, Inc, The NYTimes, Business Insider, and The Blaze. You might also know him as the host of The Unmistakable Creative podcast where he's interviewed more than 700 people from every walk of life.

In this episode, Srini guides us through a couple different environments to help us get started. Of course, that's just the tip of the iceberg. If you want to check out the rest of the class you can find it on CreativeLive.
