How Art Creates Culture and Culture Creates Art with Ryan Abeo and Charles Mudede Aug 11, 2021
    Show notes

Recently this show crossed over 300 episodes. Yes, that's right 300 over the last 11 years. Wow.

So in celebration, I wanted to do a little look back on the origins of the show, why we made specific decisions (such as why black & white) and what we've learned along the way.

I also dug around in the archives looking at some of the earliest shows. Including this episode with my good friends Ryan Abeo (recording artist) and Charles Mudede (writer, director, cultural critic). 11 years later and this conversation is still insanely relevant. The topic is around hip-hop, but it's really about how art creates culture, and culture creates art. In a way, it was a good launch pad for what would be the next 11 years of the show.

300 episodes in and we aren't stopping anytime soon. Thank YOU for being a critical part of this journey. Sharing the content, writing reviews, asking thoughtful questions and joining the conversation. It would not be the show it is, without you.

Onto the next 300 🚀🚀🚀 Enjoy!

Why Clients Call You Back Aug 09, 2021
    Show notes

From concept to final product, a master manages and calculates every aspect of their craft. The environment, the expectations, the communication throughout. The catch is, the only tried and true way to master something is to gain experience doing it the wrong way. So what do you do when it's not working out?

In this episode, I respond to this very question from Rod covering topics such as the creative gap, performing in high-pressure situations, managing risk, and how to communicate with the client if expectations aren't aligning. Ultimately, how you handle these scenarios is why clients will (or will not) call you back.

    Enjoy!

Chris Bosh: Retracing Passion to Build Lasting Career Success Aug 04, 2021
    Show notes

Nothing beats undeterred enthusiasm for doing something you absolutely love doing. It's crucial, however, to understand that working in a team often requires you take a role outside of your comfort zone. Even without scoring, for example, your selfless contributions elevate the performance of the team.

Chris Bosh is an NBA Hall of Famer, eleven-time All-Star, two-time NBA champion, Olympic gold medallist, and The League's Global Ambassador. Chris joins me on the show to share the pivotal moments in his life and the seven pillars to achieving lasting success, which he's detailed in his new book, Letters to a Young Athlete.

One of the most noteworthy takeaways of my conversation with Chris is the importance of developing exceptional team skills. The legendary basketball player bring the fire to help anyone in pursuit of excellence make their way through challenges at work and in life.

Do you want to learn how to visualize success before it materializes? What if you could sail through criticism to focus on your passion alone?

    We also discuss:

    • Learning to retrace your passion
    • The analogy between sports and life in general
    • The seven pillars to success - perseverance, teamwork, mental preparation, rising as a team, staying in the moment, doing work, and visualizing success.
    • Dealing with real-world situations to follow your passion
    • Treating others the way you would like to be treated
    • What it takes to be the best in the world at something - learning to sacrifice
    • Cultivating good reading habits for success

    Enjoy!

    6 Things I do for a Happy, Productive Day Aug 03, 2021
    Show notes

I believe that daily actions cultivate our mindset and, in turn, our mindset determines much about our lives; not only external things like success and fulfillment, but also how we handle adversity, mental/physical health, and more.

Today's episode was part of the Chase Jarvis RAW series on YouTube where I share a number of things I do first thing in the morning that have a tremendously positive impact on my day. My goal isn't to be prescriptive in this list, rather my aim is to tell you what I'VE come to know helps me crush…and be a better person. Do I miss some of these things every day? Absolutely. I'm so far from perfect with this stuff, it's laughable, but the fact remains that I put a lot of effort into kicking off my day with these few things.

    Enjoy!

Old School Photography (+ other musings) with Kai Wong Jul 28, 2021
    Show notes

If you've ever looked up film and digital camera lessons on YouTube, there's a high chance you've bumped into Kai Wong's top-of-the-game photography videos or even come across one of his videos featuring yours truly + a lego camera.

Previously known for creating innovative content with a humorous bent for one of YouTube's most subscribed photography channels, DigitalRev, Kai quit his seven-year-long association with the Media House in 2016. After stepping down as the company's face and presenter, he started his own YouTube channel, Kai W, which now has over 67 million views and nearly 1 million subscribers worldwide.

Kai joins me on the podcast today to discuss how he made the best use of the past year, isolating (or introspecting) and writing his first book, Old School Photography: 100 Things You Must Know to Take Fantastic Film Photos.

While emulating others' work could give you a head start for creating content or writing your book, Kai explains why being authentic in front of your audience is critical in the long run.

Some other things we discuss in the episode include:

    • Kai's expansive knowledge of camera lenses, film and gear
    • The winning tips to building a strong YouTube channel: personality-driven, casual, accessible, unique
    • From ideation to creating ingenious unscripted videos - Kai's way
    • The timelessness of old-school photography equipment and techniques
    • Why the rewards of writing a book outweigh the challenges

You Must Fail to Succeed Jul 26, 2021
    Show notes

"Opportunities are like buses, there's always another one coming." -Richard Branson

Be ready to catch the next bus.

This episode is a reminder that failing is necessary in order to succeed. If we are only focused on what could have been, we fail to see opportunities that are right at our fingertips.

In this episode I recount the experience building "Best Camera," a photo sharing app that gained global publicity and over 1 million downloads. Today's story begins with a barrage of texts and emails, and I describe my mindset shortly after a new app called Instagram sold to Facebook for $1B, crushing Best Camera's trajectory. Failure could have defined this part of my story, but instead, I continued to innovate, ultimately discovering the path that led to found CreativeLive. So, if failing is inevitable, how can we fail better?

Other topics in this episode include:

    • Recurring thoughts of what could have been
    • Resilience and grit
    • Not chasing missed opportunities
    • How to hear the word no and move on
    • Talent emerges through effort
    • Trusting the process

Escalate & Evolve : A blueprint for career + life with Ben Uyeda Jul 21, 2021
    Show notes

Ben Uyeda stepped away from the award-winning architecture firm he co-founded, as well as an Ivy League teaching position, to develop media companies that deliver affordable designs to the masses.

In the last four years, Ben's design ideas have reached more than 50 million people and the free designs he gives away are being built on six different continents. Despite the populist and affordable nature of his work, Ben's designs have been featured in an exhibition and workshop at the Vitra Furniture Museum in Germany. He shares many of his designs on his popular youtube channel, the Modern Maker, as well as his growing collaborations with brands to explore sustainable designs. This episode ranks as one of my my top 5 ever conversation. Why? Ben's articulation of the creative process, including:

    • How and why to start with what you have?
    • Building your career through a process of creating larger and more complex projects over time
    • The difference between mastery and competency, and how sometimes competency is all you need
    • The challenges of scaling creativity
    • and much more.

If you've either struggled with your hyphenated creative identity or simply need a boost of inspiration, this episode is going to bring you a ton of value.

    Enjoy!

How to Stay Focused and Avoid Distractions Jul 19, 2021
    Show notes

Today's episode is an audience question from Bobby, a creative asking about how to stay focused and finish projects.

ADHD and mental health stuff aside, much of this question boils down to aligning goals, values and actions. What I mean by that is that if you say you are going to do something, do it. It might be uncomfortable, difficult or humbling, but once you get started, the angst of feeling stuck goes away, replaced by new sense of exploration and growth. The last thing you want is regret around your biggest passions.

In this episode I share some of my thoughts to not only stay focused but finish projects. I get into a couple of my personal strategies to manage "fast mind" that comes up with a million ideas, and how having a few different simultaneous projects can actually help.

    Enjoy!

The Stories That Hold Us Back with Jon Acuff Jul 14, 2021
    Show notes

Your thoughts aren't something you have, they're something you hone. It's a double-edged sword; optimistic, enthusiastic thinking compounds over time to create amazing things, while a multitude of mental woes can dampen our willingness to go bigger. Jon Acuff, author of Soundtracks: the surprising solution to overthinking and one of my favorite speakers, is on the podcast to give us a lesson on how to address negative, repetitive thoughts to steer us towards our goals and dreams rather than away from them. It's incredible what becomes possible when your mental energy is applied in the right direction.

If not aware of Jon's work, he is the New York Times bestselling author of seven books, including his most recent Wall Street Journal #1 bestseller, Finish: Give Yourself the Gift of Done. He's an INC Magazine Top 100 Leadership speaker and has spoken to hundreds of thousands of people at conferences. I had the pleasure of seeing him on stage and he knocked me back with his unique blend of humor, honesty, and hope.

In this episode we get into:

    • Being organized and detailed vs. overthinking
    • How to be kind to yourself
    • Trauma-related soundtracks
    • Why writer's block doesn't exist
    • Three critical skills needed for this decade

Stop Trading Time for Money Jul 12, 2021
    Show notes

Passion and curiosity drive the artist towards a craft that usually isn't the most lucrative. Early on, we jump on any opportunity to make money. But quickly, reality sets in. Bills, taxes, medical costs, equipment- it adds up fast, and we realize that we going to have to charge more.

So how do we scale a creative business? In this episode I take a question from Fritz, a photographer working hourly, about how to do just that.

To get you thinking before the show:

What part of the business do you love? How can you build your business in a way that you do more of the things you love and bring on other people to support the areas that don't light you up as much?

Finally, never underestimate the power of your brand. Today, you might not be able to charge the high rate you feel you deserve, but that doesn't mean you won't be able to a year or two from now. Taking smaller clients and hustling along the way does not make you are ineligible to land the Nike's and Apples of the world down the road. Focus on honing your craft and don't be shy to take on bigger clients.

    Enjoy!
