Releasing Trauma and Mastering Your Emotions with Jason Wilson Sep 15, 2021
    Show notes

Making headlines back in 2016, a video recording of Jason Wilson's student's martial arts test went viral on social media. In the video, young Bruce is overwhelmed with fear of failure. Jason teaches him to embrace his emotion and overcome the challenge.

Jason is the founder and head instructor of the Cave of Adullam Transformational Training Academy (CATTA) and Yunion (pronounced union), a non-profit youth development organization in Detroit, Michigan. He has written two books on emotional vulnerability in men, Cry Like A Man and Breaking Through Emotional Barriers: The Four F's To Emotional Freedom. His upcoming release, Battle Cry: Waging and Winning the War Within, teaches us to redefine masculinity to create a fitting world where gender-based stereotyping is no longer existent.

Jason is also an expert in Emotional Stability Training® and has garnered CATTA numerous acknowledgements and awards for his work teaching males how to confront and conquer their negative emotions with composure.

Today, we talk about emotional incarceration in men and why we need to break any misleading mantras that demand men be tough all the time. Jason shares a framework for releasing emotional trauma, the precursors to stress and anxiety, and how to free yourself of living in fear.

Some other things we talk about:

    1. What board breaking in martial arts signifies - overcoming the emotional barriers in our lives

    2. Jason says, "When you allow a man to become whole or comprehensive, instead of just living life as a masculine male, he becomes more aware of the wrongs and the rights that he flicked on the women in his life." Hence, it's essential to teach the men in our lives that it's okay to cry, to express, to feel so they learn to treat women the way they're supposed to.

    3. Jason's concept of 4Rs - Release, Reflect, Reset, and Rest.

    4. Understanding trauma and why it's important to release it

    5. Stop living from fear or societal expectations; live from the good in your heart.

    Enjoy!

Life gets easier when you decide to play your own game. From an early age, we are taught through school that life is a game to win against our peers. Value and success are determined on a uniform scale regardless of an individual's background or strengths. This perspective teaches us that the only way to stand out is to be better at the same task that everyone else around you is doing. This episode is a reminder that it's not always about being better, but rather, being different.

Food Saved Me with Danielle Walker Sep 08, 2021
    Show notes

You've heard it bandied about in various contexts, but what do you really think when someone talks about healthy eating for maximized performance? Do you think one needs to give up on tasty to stay healthy?

Danielle Walker, the popular food blogger behind Against All Grain, tells us today that healthy food doesn't have to be rude to the taste buds — so long as you're willing to do a bit of research.

Danielle has been on a mission to share healthy food with the world for over a decade. She started with her first cookbook, Against All Grain, a New York Times Bestseller, followed by two other New York Times Bestsellers, Against All Grain Celebrations and Eat What You Love. To top it all, Danielle has a new release - Food Saved Me, a memoir detailing her journey of finding health and hope while living with an autoimmune disease.

In today's episode, Danielle shares how she turned her kitchen into her laboratory, experimenting and discovering gut-friendly delectable recipes. We also discuss inflammatory diseases, their impact on the ones affected and those living around them, and why eating healthy is the first step to dealing with any autoimmune disorder.

Some points to take away from our conversation:

    1. Our gut houses the majority of our immune system - any kind of inflammation really begins there.

    2. How to dig out the root cause of your illness and why food, lifestyle, and mental health are critical players to the same

    3. Misdiagnosis of disease and how to avoid that

    4. How to reframe your mindset and your priorities for better health - frame food in a positive light, start in simple and easy steps, and understand the "why" before you begin.

    5. Why to be vocal and honest about your medical condition

    And so much more. Enjoy!

Uncreated works of personal expression are at the top of everybody's bucket list. Yet, how is it that the most important goals we have are commonly left unchecked when we kick the bucket?

The time for excuses is up, and I believe that the ability to be self-directed and motivated is critical to a fulfilling creative career. Waiting for inspiration isn't a reliable way to create.

Today we dive into 4 ways you can overcome your creative hurdles. Remember, there is no one-size-fits-all formula. Trial and error are expected.

Some additional discussions worth digging into:

    1. Ryan Holiday: Establishing a practice, finding stillness in a chaotic world

    2. Jericho Brown: What can you do today to start creating the life you want to live? If you're writing for 30 minutes a day, you're on your way.

    3. Marie Forleo: Why you should create before you consume.

    4. Jon Acuff: Idea bankruptcy > writer's block

Brené Brown: The Quest For True Belonging Aug 25, 2021
    Show notes

I asked and you voted. And well, it's no surprise that the audience choice for best episode on the podcast over the last 10 years and 300 episodes is one of my favorite people in the world, Brené Brown.

Brené is a vulnerability and empathy expert and has one of the most watched TED Talks of all time on the subject. She is the author of four New York Times bestselling books, one of which, Daring Greatly, has served as a crucial resource for my own creativity. Her book, Braving the Wilderness: The Quest for True Belonging and the Courage to Stand Alone, is not only a tool for personal development, it's also a blueprint for communication at scale, especially in difficult conversations.

We get into how loneliness is related to creativity, why artists have a unique ability to speak truth to bullshit, and setting boundaries without being a jerk. This stuff is critical to maximize the impact you have with your work, art, craft, etc.

Brené's ability to stand alone didn't come easy, that was something she trained and practiced. As she discloses in the show, although she often gives speeches to large audiences, she identifies as an introvert and feels the same social anxiety we all experience.

If you're new to this episode, I can't wait for you to hear this. If you've already listened a time or two, thanks for selecting it for another listen. I would not be surprised if something hits you that needed to hear right now.

    Enjoy!

Public Failure, Money, and Craft Aug 23, 2021
    Show notes

A while back I received an e-mail from a guy named Mike Ducille. It was an invitation to Mike's book club, which includes a number of other like-minded creators and entrepreneurs. Some topics we get into:

    • Lessons learned from a failed app launch- what do you do after a major failure? I'm not talking about a little mis-step. How do you bounce back from a potentially career-stifling blow?

    • The psychology of money (check out Ramit Sethi's book). Ramit is also launching a podcast to bolster the stuff he's already putting out in the world. Highly recommended checking it out, especially if you want to improve your mindset around money.

    • Scaling a business by charging higher prices- time is a powerful tool. As you gain experience, connections and skill, you need to charge higher prices. What if you could sell your work for 10x more than you do now? The key here is finding the market and conveying value to the right person.

    • Sending effective personal messages, collaborating with high profile folks, handling guests' busy schedules... Knowing how to navigate the world of assistants, LinkedIn and cold e-mails gives you leg up on your counterparts.

I love this stuff. What Mike and his book club are doing is a great example of how to use online community to lift each other up.

    Enjoy!

Command the Fees You Deserve with Ilise Benun Aug 17, 2021
    Show notes

Pricing creative work if an art onto itself. Should you charge hourly or by the project? Are you pricing yourself out of desperation or with profit in mind?

To help with some of these questions, I wanted to share a few lessons from a class taught by Ilise Benun on understanding what you're worth, the science of pricing, and four pricing strategies you can use right now.

Ilise has built a career advising the independently employed. She has authored 7 guidebooks for creative entrepreneurs and runs the popular online freelance resource, The Marketing Mentor. Ilise is her today to teach you how to land clients who value your services and stop the self-defeating cycle of taking whatever comes along. Also in this episode:

    • The myths of the "starving artist" + non-traditional paths aren't "real jobs"
    • Negative money mindset that asking for what you want is greedy or selfish
    • Imposter syndrome

This episode is critical listening, and only scratches the surface of what Ilise covers in her class. If you're trying to make money from what you create, be sure to check out her class on CreativeLive.
