How to Find a Mentor Jun 20, 2022
    Show notes

Everyone wants a mentor, the wise little green creature who will teach us how to swing a lightsaber and use the Force.

I was no exception when I started out in photography. I thought someone was going to take my outstretched hand and guide me along the path to greatness. They'd tell me what to learn, how to learn it, and what to do once I'd done so.

As I've progressed along my creative path and become a person whom other aspiring photographers ask to serve as their own mentor, I've come to realize that mentorship as we think of it is a pernicious fairy tale.

In this episode, a few things I've learned about about finding a mentor.

    Enjoy!

No Artist Tolerates Reality Jun 13, 2022
    Show notes

The world would have you believe that creativity is an indulgence. "Get a real job" or "find something you're good at" are a few common phrases that get thrown around. But so long as you do that, you're on someone else's path. It isn't living your own life - it's following someone else's. Why spend your life that way when you could be seeing the world for what it really is?

In today's episode, we'll explore what Friedrich Nietzsche meant by his words "No artist tolerates reality" and why it's fodder for artists like you and me, even today.

    We'll also dig into why:

    • Creators cannot tolerate the "status quo."

    • Creativity is your birthright.

    • Reality is malleable and different for everyone.

    • Everything in this world was created by someone just like you.

    • When you choose creativity, you distort reality, introducing a part of you into it to make a change in the lives of others.

    • Establishing a creative practice is the only way to a creative life.

    Enjoy!

The Secret to Starting a New Career Jun 06, 2022
    Show notes

Early on in my career, I had to make an important distinction between what it means to be a photographer, and what it means to be a professional.

Not suprrisingly, if you have an ambition to do something different in your career, there are a myriad of obstacles. The largest one, being you.

In this episode I pull some lessons from my own career that helped me break through.

    Enjoy!

Daniel Pink: The Power of Regret Jun 01, 2022
    Show notes

Regret is an unavoidable aspect of the human condition. No matter how your life plays out, there will be situations that don't go your way, things you wish you would have done, words left unspoken, etc.

We are also culturally conditioned to think of regret as a negative thing. We are reminded to always focus on the positive, push negative thoughts away from our memory and only focus on moving forward. But when used correctly, regret can play a pivotal role in our ability to move forward, to problem solve, and make informed decisions.

Daniel Pink has written seven books, five of which are New York Times bestsellers. He was a host and a co-executive producer of the 2014 National Geographic Channel social science TV series, "Crowd Control," and from 1995 to 1997, he was the chief speechwriter for Vice President Al Gore. Today on the podcast, he joins me for a conversation about his most recent book, "The Power of Regret; How Looking Backward Moves Us Forward."

    Highlights from the conversation:

    • The biggest regrets come from inaction, rather than trying something that didn't ultimately work out.
    • Discomfort can lead to clarification and growth.
    • Regret can help make better decisions.
    • Avoiding inherent biases

    Enjoy!

How to Navigate Hard Days and Creative Ruts May 30, 2022
    Show notes

Have you ever found yourself in a creative rut? How did you get out of it? And if you're in one right now, what tools can you use to create change? I recently received a question via the text community (206-309-5177) from a creator named Alex, asking about overcoming hard days. In lieu of May being mental health month, I wanted to share a few thoughts based on what's worked for me, with the hope to bring some value to you.

Here is the question from Alex:

"Hey, Chase. I generally do a really good job of taking care of my mental health. I use tools like positive self-talk, meditation, exercise, or even just call friends when I'm feeling down or discouraged. But sometimes we have really tough days. So I'd love to know how you handle the really tough days. Do you have any advice on weathering some of the deeper challenges we face as creators?"

    Enjoy!
