Kelly chimes in with some classic children's book favorites, The Giving Tree and The Very Hungry Caterpillar, and asks for girl book recs! Lizz is also stocking up on Puffworks baby peanut butter puffs and excited to try out her My Soft Birkenstock dupes. Kelly snagged a deal on Land's End overnight bags, is getting the family all on the same page with a clear acrylic weekly calendar, and is keeping her kiddo comfy in Bamboo jammies from Caden Lane.

A listener with a family of five has been driving a Honda Accord for 10 years and is looking for their next vehicle. Kelly recommends checking out a Toyota Sienna or Honda Odyssey. Another listener who drives a 2021 Explorer is considering a Kia Carnival lease, but the deal sounds too good to be true. Lease specials are the bane of Kelly's existence. She recommends checking out the fine print — the tax, title, and license fees and the required down payment.

George brings the Gen Alpha word of the day, "question," as in crush. And to him, true love is so gross Kelly and Lizz compare it to cooties in the nineties.

Kelly's clearing up some questions about what went down when she met Tyler. She says it was "I had a barbecue stain on my white t-shirt, she was killing me in that miniskirt" vibes. After a failed turkey hunting invite, she didn't give up though and eventually bestowed him with her precious cupid's arrow.

Kelly has discovered widgets and is loving them as her new base model luxury. She's tracking her phone pickups, getting more intentional about task management, and building scroll time into the day.

In industry news James Bell, head of corporate communications at Kia, has the inside scoop on what's next for Kia. He shares key hires Kia made that transformed their image and positioning in the marketplace, shifting the company from a used car alternative to a lineup of vehicles that look great, drive great, are safer, and instill confidence in their drivers. Kelly and Lizz ask what goes into naming a car and where the ham-stars went. James clears up the Kia theft issue, how the cars were really stolen, and what Kia has done to resolve the issue.

James is not going to be ditching the drive-through with the Carpool, but he does have a very important California drive-through recommendation. The double double combo with twice cooked fries at In-and-Out Burger is his go-to.

→ The Car Mom Auto Show is just around the corner! Get ready for a road trip and knock out all of your car browsing in one weekend with fun for the whole family.

In driveway dumps, Kelly shares about her family travel success and how she's ready for an 8 year old in the family. New tie dye traditions have taken shape and the kids had a blast. James had the best day of his life with mom after his surgery last week while Kelly managed a febrile seizure at home with one of her kiddos (everyone is fine). After this segment, coping with cookies and stocking your freezer might just get added to your chill summer plans.

A listener's 2019 Tiguan might be totaled, should she take a different approach at the dealership? Kelly and Lizz agree—an easy sale isn't one a salesman should take advantage of. When you really need a car, leverage your urgency! How do you know when you've outgrown a friendship? The writing might be on the wall with this one. Kelly and Lizz say you don't have to make it a confrontation when someone shows they're really out of touch with where you're at in life.

In industry news Jeep is releasing their first EV, the Wagoneer S—which looks nothing like a Wagoneer. Kelly and Lizz talk about the EV tax credit smoke and mirrors. Both Ford CEO, Jim Farley and GM CEO, Mary Barra took the stage separately at a recent conference to share their perspective on the long-term powertrain strategy. And GM plans to bring back plugin hybrid vehicles to its lineup by 2027.

Lizz brings today's ditch the drive-through, shredded taco beef roast, from The Car Mom Crew Facebook group. A TRUCK DAD Q&A May 30, 2024
    Show notes

Grab your Twizzlers, the Stumpe family is going to the Ozarks! The Truck Dad is on the Carpool podcast—finally. And while your 20 bucks might not deliver the same goods they always did, this episode certainly will.

Tyler has surrendered to his fate and is now one of those 'exercise people' with insufferable soreness. Kelly is certain a good round of shiplap would turn that two-pack into a six.

The Carpool has questions, and Tyler's got answers. What were the best and worst of the new home renovations? How did Tyler become so good at fixing things? Who edits his Instagram reels? The Truck Dad also shares his take on meeting, dating, and marrying Kelly—she says she loves this country chameleon boy and Tyler says she just wouldn't give up. Tyler's first-car tales of farm trucks and Ford Tauruses, a minnow-entertainment hack, and Kelly and Tyler's polar opposite airport personalities round out this riveting segment.

A listener writes in for advice on getting a truck as a family car. Kelly's here to change the stigma about mom cars being only three row SUVs.

Less butter, no chemicals to give you the ick, absolutely gorgeous—and easier clean up? Say no more. When you’re ditching the drive-through, reach for Caraway Homes, non-toxic kitchenware. Their pans are not only healthy, beautiful, and aesthetically pleasing, they also come with the perfect organization system. Over 65,000 people have given Caraway kitchenware five stars. Now it's time to try it for yourself.

In industry news cars, trucks, and SUVs in the US keep getting older, hitting a record average of 12.6 years. New vehicles have an average selling price of just over $45K. Rivian lost $38,000 per vehicle delivered in the first quarter. And a new California bill could require new cars to beep at speeding drivers.

Tyler recounts his favorite meals that Kelly makes—namely her beef stew and pulled pork and a ditch the drive-through plus a love-thy neighbor comes from loyal listener Jordan. To make these simple and family-friendly ham and cheese croissant melts you'll need a twelve pack of croissant rolls, rosemary ham, Gruyere cheese, and dijon mustard. Bake at home or deliver ready to go in your friend's oven just before meal time. Serve with a bagged salad on the side.

Kelly's figuring out what belongs in her keeping-her-company corner on today's driveway dumps. Lizz is changing her mind about bachelorette parties after reviewing the comments sections in the Carpool Crew Facebook Group. But, she's standing strong on getting to the airport with less than two hours to spare.

In today's advice segment, a listener asks how to find the best balance between professional and personal relationships when it comes to giving feedback to a friend at work. Another Carpool mom wonders what five passenger SUV offers the most family friendly amenities and allows for an average adult body to safely sit between two side to side car seats. Kelly is a fan of the Atlas Crossport—with a caveat: all families who are car shopping should take a long hard look at their car seats.

THE TRAVEL HATE EIGHT May 23, 2024
    Show notes

Kelly's celebrity dream came true over dinner with Kate from Naptime Kitchen, her Charleston vs Nasheville debate makes for quite the hot take, and she just isn't a movie quote girl. Join this episode of the Carpool for a heated hate eight, money-saving industry news, and more!

Today's millennial word of the day is 'steeze' meaning your swag and style.

Kelly is redacting the Poppi lemon lime review and giving it a second chance. It's still not Sprite, but maybe that's a good thing. She and Lizz also wonder what the heck is with the one-soda-a-night limit?

Kelly and Lizz recap their hate eight of airport traveling from a recent trip. Which one takes the cake? A bad seatmate TSA anxiety, having to check your carryon because there isn't enough room on board, the impossibly small airplane bathroom, airport concession premium pricing, the corralling and creeping during pre-plane boarding, getting the timing of flights right, or the fact that every restaurant in the airport is bad? Listen in to find out!

Kelly has rounded up the best deals to be had on Memorial Day including the 2024 Mazda CX 90. With 0% APR for 36 months and $1,500 in bonus cash, this is a great buy. Check out The Car Mom Blog for all of your Memorial Day car shopping! While you're there, grab The Car Mom's guide to saving time and money at the car dealership so you can negotiate like a pro! Wrapping up industry news, Biden hits Chinese EVs with a hundred percent tariff.

    Show notes

Embrace the chaos! Celebrate the 200th episode of the Carpool podcast with Kelly and Lizz! Visit your local hospital cafe for lunch wraps! And renovate your house, too!

On this jam packed episode, Kelly and Lizz consider the evolution of the Carpool podcast and bring you a millennial word of the day that might be one of the last. The word 'bag' means making money as in, "Get that bag, girl!"

Kelly and Lizz both share baby updates. Lizz's clue is that her baby name is the perfect one for a strong woman who's destined to become a CEO boss. Kelly had her baby name consultation and a few of the suggestions were: Nell, Cornelia, Elanore, Louise, Bernadette, Winnie, Agnes, Martha, Maisy, Kit, Edith, and Esther.

If you're on board the low-lift luxury train, you probably love treating yourself to the top options with everything in life. So…why settle when you're looking for a doctor? Kelly's back with a parachute report for today's last three transactions. If you haven't bought yours for summer run, don't walk to order one. Lizz grabbed some Caden Lane jammies for James on sale, got her formula subscription, and picked out a runner rug to finish her bathroom makeover. Kelly bought the Chicco 360 tech rotating car seat which she's convinced will be the GOAT of grandparent car seats. She's also excited about her new sanitizing wipes.

In industry news, moms are the biggest car enthusiasts—of course. Subaru is gearing up to leverage its relationship with Toyota to expand its electric lineup in the next couple of years, bridging their hybrid gap. And GM now has the hardware to help an electric Silverado power your house in an emergency.

    Ditch the drive-through

Taylor shares today's ditch-the-drive-through, a crowd-pleaser when she and a bestie get together to feed their five littles. These chicken pitas are easy to throw together in a pinch. Cube your chicken and cook in a skillet with creamy Italian dressing. Add the cooked chicken to a pita and top with tzatziki sauce, feta, tomato, red onion, cucumber. MOM CARS THAT DON'T EXIST (BUT SHOULD) May 16, 2024
    Show notes

Kid-free travel? Yes please! Kelly is headed to a wedding, trying on tangents, and sending all the Carpool moms well-washed car wishes this month.

Kelly and Lizz want Sydney and Grayson to think they're cool, but today's millennial word 'brick' might not be the way to do it. If you're trying to impress the younger crowd, though, just whip this one out anytime you need to indicate that something is freezing cold.

Kelly's crew is turning into a birthday dinner family—four kid birthdays are just too much. Both gals had a fabulous Mother's Day. Kelly's was simple and sweet and Lizz had brunch with mom, her favorite.

Coffee in bed with a little whip cream on top is just the base model luxury that Kelly and Lizz need. In fact, it might just replace the Nespresso machine.

The grass grows where you water it. Kelly's applying this fast lane philosophy by growing grass in one little area of her life. Goodwill drop offs, returns that 'make you money', and getting your nails done are just a few little grass growers you could add to your week.

Pots and pans you don't have to put away? Yes, please. With Caraway's beautiful cookware you can just leave them out and enjoy the aesthetic. Kelly gives a nod to the Playdate Pod for their segments sayings that don't exist and country songs that don't exist which inspired today's segment mom cars that don't exist. But…did Kelly and Lizz get the same assignment? Lizz offers up solid ideas like the Chevy Energizer and Ford XL while Kelly leverages an interesting theme with the Volkswagen IUD three-row, the Hyundai Placenta, and the Honda Uterus

A Carpool family is moving from a Honda Odyssey to a new Chevy Traverse. They're wondering what they are going to miss most. Kelly says the floor space will be a sore spot, but the tech might make up for it. Another listener asks how Kelly and Lizz would deal with a mother-in-law who is just too much. They're just as mortified as she is and encourage her to keep setting boundaries. Kelly's long-game solution? Be the mother-in-law you want to see in the world!

IF you're talking without saying much you might be guilty of yapping, which is today's millennial word of the day.

Kelly is ready to rant, Naptime Kitchen is diving into a meal-prep filled may, and the gals are here for the car coolers that make life a little easier in today's driveway dumps. Lizz is habit stacking with Bridgerton as her new cardio show and Kelly is adjusting her grocery shopping routines. To wrap up the dumps, Kelly reminisces about The Game of Thrones finale that threw her into labor and Lizz wonders why everything is working for her.

In fast lane philosophies, Kelly shares a few inspiring quotes from an IG comment thread including, "Worrying is worshiping the problem," and, "Every rejection is a redirection." Lizz doesn't have time for philosophy lately, but she has found a few minutes to start Lady Tan's Circle of Women on audible.

In industry news, Kelly brings a field report from her consultations with car-shopping families. She encourages families to consider the longevity of three row vehicles for families with two or three kids. A mindset shift might be just what you need if you're in the market, too. Lizz teases a future blog about the Pathfinder vs Telluride.

Don't sleep on little potatoes, grab a bag and get ready to ditch the drive-through. This week Kelly roasted potatoes, with rosemary, salt, and pepper. Added Kielbasa sausage, green beans, and asparagus, and then topped with a sauce after baking. A few of Kelly and Lizz's favorite sauces you might want to try too are: Sriracha mayo, chipotle mayo, dijon-lemon-pepper mayo, pesto mayo, roasted garlic aioli, caramelized onion dip, and Trader Joe's chili oil.

LIZZ IS JOANNA GAINES May 09, 2024
    Show notes

Happy Mother's Day to all the Carpool moms who are in the trenches of mothering! Lizz is getting ready for her first mother's day with James in her arms and Kelly just wants to cook a big family meal in peace.

Sydney came through with today's millennial word of the day on a recent phone call with Lizz. Faded has a new meaning and Gen Z is using it to mean 'skipped' as in 'she faded Mother's Day.' A bonus Gen Z fashion update: linen pants are the sweatpants of summer. Kelly and Lizz are getting theirs from Athleta.

Lizz doesn't mind if you want to call her Joanna Gaines. She's tackled a few home renovation projects that have got her inspired. Moving a toilet paper holder turned into a much bigger project and she's impressed Tyler's mom with her nail gun skills. Her advice? Start with your kids' bathroom and be creative!

George's animal game of the day is Kelly asking how many of these animal species are left in the world: giraffes, blue macaw parrots, gorillas, polar bears, sheep, and blue whales. Lizz is not a fan of guessing the answers. Kelly also shares fun animal facts about the smartest animals in the world.

On today's advice segment a listener offers her expert insights on meal train etiquette and sharing your link in text. Another asks if it's possible to make travel with the third row down safe. Kelly shares the risks of after-market nets and products and what to prioritize when it comes to inside-of-the-car safety. And last, a sweet sister-in-law wonders if sister-talk extends to sister-in-laws.

Should you put a wet towel on your supercharger handle to make charging faster? The jury is out on this industry news story. Kelly adds some tips that might help make EV batteries last longer. Kelly and Lizz both share thoughts on the cyber truck—which wasn't as awful as they thought it would be—and then tackle a few controversial stories about Tesla's robot-taxis and Rivian's cash-burning quarters.

Chicken tandoor is today's ditch the drive-through and May-rinaide. Kelly discovered this delicious recipe playing cookbook roulette. Get the full recipe for this 30 minute to 24 hour chicken thigh marinade on The Car Mom website.
