Dr. Reiss specializes in 19th-century American literature and culture, with strong interests in the history of medicine, race, disability, popular culture, and environmental issues. We'll discuss his publication, The Showman and the Slave: Race, Death, and Memory in Barnum’s America. The book chronicles P.T. Barnum, credited with founding the circus United States circus industry. Now known for clowns, a menagerie of animals and a flying trapeze; things started off with the body of a dead black female slave. Barnum wheeled out Joice Heth's remains for the entertainment and Racism appeal of Whites. Barnum's "freak show" took place during the 1800's and is the foundation of minstrel acts, black face performance, and the trillion dollar entertainment industry currently streamed around the world. Sarah Burns visits The Context of White Supremacy. Burns is a Yale graduate and author of The Central Park Five: A Chronicle Of A City WIlding. The books investigates the 1989 rape of a White female in Central Park, New York. Five black and latino males were publicly crucified and criminally convicted for raping Patricia Meili. After the non-white males completed their criminal sentences, DNA testing exonerated all of the defendants and a convicted sex offender admitted to raping Meili. Dr. Frances Cress Welsing makes her 14th visit to The Context of White Supremacy. We'll use cannibal and necrophilic Jeffrey Dammer as a case study to illustrate Dr. Welsing's theory of White Genetic Annihilation. We'll ask Dr. Welsing to deconstruct Dahmer's acts: coveting the genitals of his black and non-white males, preying on the weak (mostly black males), and eating the melanin rich bodies/flesh his victims. Dr. Jane H. Hill visits The Context of White Supremacy. Dr. Hill is Regents' Professor of Anthropology and Linguistics at the University of Arizona. She has done extensive research on the relationship between language and White Supremacy. Her 2008 publication, The Everyday Language of White Racism, examines how words are used to advance, conceal and excuse the ongoing enterprise of White Terrorism. We'll discuss how White Supremacist commentary is frequently masqueraded as "a joke" - and how the practice of coding White Supremacy in jokes is extremely effective for perpetuating the system. We'll also discuss the concept of "Mock Spanish".
