Ep. 480: Why An "American Nation" Cannot Be Salvaged Jul 20, 2021
    Show notes

Some "conservatives" want to salvage an "American nation." This is impossible, both practically and historically. I explain in this episode of The Brion McClanahan Show.

Ep. 479: Can "Conservatism" Save America? Jul 19, 2021
    Show notes

The simple answer is no, but particularly if you are talking about Lincolnian nationalism and the "proposition nation," the favorite projects of the Claremont/Hillsdale school of "conservatism." You can't conserve anything with that as your core argument. Glenn Ellmers agrees that conservatism is a lost cause, and he calls for some type of local action to arrest the heavy hand of Washington, D.C., but he doesn't understand that his he and his friends are part of the problem, not the solution. I discuss in this episode of The Brion McClanahan Show.

Ep. 478: What is American Populism? Jul 15, 2021
    Show notes

Trump's election in 2016 and the ongoing reevaluation of the Republican Party has given rise to a discussion of American populism. What is it? Is Trump a populist? Are some Democrats populists? Are populists and progressives the same thing? These are important questions. A recent piece at National Review suggests we could learn much from William Jennings Bryan. There is some truth to this. I discuss populism in this episode of The Brion McClanahan Show.

    Ep. 477: The Battle Over 1776 Jul 14, 2021
    Show notes

The 250th anniversary of the Declaration takes place in five years and the "history wars" of 2020 and 2021 make it clear that it won't be a celebratory event for a large segment of the population. And judging by "conservative" and leftist scribblings on the topic, it also won't be historically accurate. I discuss the issue in this episode of The Brion McClanahan Show.

Ep. 476: We Need No Declaration of Independence Jul 13, 2021
    Show notes

Did Southerners link the birth of the United States to 1788 rather than 1776? That's what neocon Cameron Hilditch at National Review argues. In fact, he believes July 4 presented problems for secession, and that Southerners explicitly rejected the Declaration for that reason. He needs to read more history. I take Hilditch to task in this episode of The Brion McClanahan Show.

    Ep. 475: A Proslavery Constitution? Jul 12, 2021
    Show notes

Is the United States Constitution proslavery or anti-slavery? Or is it something else. The modern progressive left would like you to believe it was a proslavery document while the neoconservative right and some libertarians would argue it was anti-slavery. I contend it was neither. I discuss this now controversial issue in this episode of The Brion McClanahan Show.

Ep. 474: To Tenure or Not to Tenure? Jul 08, 2021
    Show notes

I recorded this episode before Nikole Hannah-Jones decided to reject UNC's offer of tenure and bolt for Howard University. It doesn't matter. The fact is, the academy, and particularly journalism departments, deserve her. American journalism has always been about propaganda, and Jones admits her 1619 Project is not history, it's journalism. In reality, it's one long Op-Ed. I discuss tenure and journalism in this episode of The Brion McClanahan Show.

    Ep. 473: Radical Hamilton? Jul 07, 2021
    Show notes

Leftist Christian Parenti thinks Alexander Hamilton was a "radical" and that most Americans misunderstand his "radical" agenda. This is true, but he left off two very important groups: libertarians and real federalists who have been hammering Hamilton's "radicalism" for years. And don't forget that Russell Kirk never classified Hamilton as a "conservative." I discuss Hamilton in this episode of The Brion McClanahan Show.

Ep. 472: Can "Liberal Nationalism" Save America? Jul 06, 2021
    Show notes

Michael Lind correctly blamed Yankees for ruining America. But he also thinks Yankees should control America. You see, back in 1995, Lind wrote a book titled "The Next American Nation" where he believed a 4th revolution was needed to save the "United State." Lind argued that a type of "liberal nationalism" would produce an America where everyone would want to live. He wasn't joking. Lind contended that multiculturalism was bad and that America was not built on an idea, but he also fumbles and stumbles with the term "nationalism" and this supposed panacea that nationalism can produce. I discuss Lind, a bit of his recent book, The New Class War, and nationalism, in this episode of The Brion McClanahan Show.

Ep. 471: Radical Federalism or Just Federalism? Jul 05, 2021
    Show notes

When neocons start understanding that federalism--what they call radical federalism or radical decentralization--is the way forward, we might be on to something. Maybe, just maybe, Americans are waking up to reality. The United States have never been the "United State" and nationalism has always been the wrench in the spokes of the wheel. If we want political peace, thinking locally and acting locally is the only way forward. It's the American way. I discuss "radical federalism" in this episode of The Brion McClanahan Show.
